Opinion on this M&S dress

I just bought this dress at M&S. Mainly because it is cotton and I was delighted it was the right length (I'm 5ft 2). There were other dresses I preferred but were ridiculously long.

I'm not sure. It seems simultaneously infantile and similar to my mother's nightdresses. I'm 54. I like the fit though and the colour, I'm a few pounds overweight but I downsized a bit so it's fitted over the bust, like with the model. I think they intend it to be a lot more oversized than that - I bought a 6 which I most definitely am not.

I'll most probably keep it anyway as I don't have any loose dresses, but curious as to people's opinions.

I'm 5 foot 1 and a little overweight and wouldn't wear it. I'm 38. I think it would make me look quite dumpy. I prefer just below the knee flare/skater dresses. They aren't clingy and are flattering. They skim the problem areas.

KirstenBlest · 30/07/2023 14:24

I don't dislike it but there's no way I would wear it. Too nightie-like for me but I don't wear prints.

ThatFraggle · 30/07/2023 14:25

I think the only people that style doesn't look dumpy on are tall, willowy types.

But that being said, there's nothing wrong with being comfortable and dumpy.

Yes I know what you mean, ideally I would like on the knee. I don't have good legs though (at any point) so dresses a few inches off ankle or trousers are my go-to.

I think it’s lovely.

Haha yes, comfortable and dumpy may well be my category. I'm in the process of losing weight but it's a bit of a long road.

I like it. Shorter people are still wearing this sort of dress, as it's such a loved style at the moment, that I think it wouldn't matter. It looks super comfortable and the print is pretty.

Slightly like a nightdress I suppose.

ThatDayIBecameFree · 30/07/2023 14:28

It's very shapeless indeed; I'm not sure who it would look great on. The pattern is very safe as well, which doesn't help.

Misslizzie96 · 30/07/2023 14:29

I’m similar size and would wear it if fitted over the bust with a cross body bag to give a bit of shape and more chunky sandals or trainers but I’m not 💯 on the fabric, but I’m olive skin dark hair. It’s is quite Aztec print though so not like a nightdress, if the colours suit your colouring etc I’d say go for it, great comfortable shape for summer.

Yes exactly, chunky sandals and cross body bag is how I would wear it. I'm blonde so the colour is fine. The print is floral and yes very safe, I like prints though.

I think I'll put it in 'wear to the shops on hot days' and 'maybe wear to (very casual) office if it's boiling' rather than a weekend away which was what my original shopping expedition was for.

I think it looks awful - both the style and the print. Agree with Thatdayibecamefree - who on earth is it designed for??

Have to assume it's for people going into hospital 😂

It's dreadful. Even a supermodel couldn't make that dress look good.

TroutofnoCraic · 30/07/2023 15:02

Nana's nightie vibes.

SummaLuvin · 30/07/2023 15:19

equal parts drab, conspicuous, and ugly.

CoveredWindows · 30/07/2023 15:23

I like it! I’m a sucker for a print dress. I think wearing it fitted as you’ve described sounds good.

I sometimes wear a belt over dresses if I’m worried, but I think it’s pretty and summery. I’m also blonde so the colour appeals

Nighty!

Clarinet1 · 30/07/2023 15:28

I think it’s cute. I’m also short and dumpy and I’d wear it.

RosesAndHellebores · 30/07/2023 15:31

Love the print and the colours. Definitely want to try it on.

Saverage · 30/07/2023 15:33

I'm enjoying the comments, good and bad!

The bad comments are making we weirdly more attached to it. I like an underdog.

I think if I wear it to work I'll just announce as I walk in 'yes I know it looks like a nightie' just to get that out of the way.

It's like a maternity dress

mathanxiety · 30/07/2023 15:37

I like it and I think it will look good on you as you intend to wear it.

I'm not sure it's office wear, though it would depend on the office.
