Opinion on this M&S dress

I just bought this dress at M&S. Mainly because it is cotton and I was delighted it was the right length (I'm 5ft 2). There were other dresses I preferred but were ridiculously long.

I'm not sure. It seems simultaneously infantile and similar to my mother's nightdresses. I'm 54. I like the fit though and the colour, I'm a few pounds overweight but I downsized a bit so it's fitted over the bust, like with the model. I think they intend it to be a lot more oversized than that - I bought a 6 which I most definitely am not.

I'll most probably keep it anyway as I don't have any loose dresses, but curious as to people's opinions.

I agree it looks better on you than on the website

That looks really nice on you!

I think M&S pick the wrong models for their dresses sometimes.

Saverage · 30/07/2023 20:00

Thanks for the nice comments even if you're being kind!

Print is a bit divisive in general, I'm a fan, I wear print a lot. Usually graphical prints rather than floral.

Graphic rather, not graphical.

Honestly if you think you’ll get a lot of wear out of it it’s very nice (and cotton!). It does have Laura Ashley vibes.

littlestrawberryhat · 30/07/2023 20:06

Aw I like it, in fact I’ve looked at this before online. It’s cute and looks vintage. A little bit different to most floral dress offerings at that price point. I actually think it’s quite “fashion”, looks more expensive and fashion-y than m&s

littlestrawberryhat · 30/07/2023 20:08

Oh I just saw the pic of you in it! I think it’s looks lovely and love the shoes with it! If (I do have a job in fashion so if I say so myself I’ve got a good eye for these things…) you look fab

TakenRoot · 30/07/2023 20:10

It looks a lot less nightie-like on you than it does on the model.

New side hustle, OP!

OldKingCole · 30/07/2023 20:12

It’s horrendous - but I really just hate that style - so over done and so over.

Groutyonehereagain · 30/07/2023 20:14

No way would I wear that. Sorry.

blahblahblah1654 · 30/07/2023 20:18

It really suits you. It looks much better on you than the model. You have a great figure. I love prints like that too!

xyz111 · 30/07/2023 20:21

It's awful, even the model looks awful in it. Just reminds me of what my Nan would wear to bed

SwedishEdith · 30/07/2023 20:24

It looks lovely on you

I really like it OP. It's a pretty dress and it suits you.

I have a dress which many posters on here fall over themselves to tell me how awful it is. In the real world it's one of my most complimented dresses, from all ages and from people who have no obligation to say nice things to me.

Ignore them (especially the "Nana's nighty" bunch)

LaLaFlottes · 30/07/2023 20:45

Looks great on you - better than the picture from the website although I didn’t dislike that as much as other posters.

Great shoe choice too! Looks fab.

mondaytosunday · 30/07/2023 20:47

Looks like a nightie or housecoat to me.

Angrywife · 30/07/2023 20:49

That shape of dress is rarely flattering, even on stick thin tall models it looks undeniably frumpy. I've no idea why anyone would wear them. Add in that pattern and you have a nighty my gran used to wear.

Sorry op, I can't see how any style of shoes or bag can make it look any less frumpy.

Angrywife · 30/07/2023 20:53

I've just seen your photo and I take back my previous post! It does look much better on you, buying the smaller size was a good shout.
I think if you wore a tan belt to match your shoes it would look really lovely!

You look great in it - I'd opt for a nice satchel bag with it

Ivyiris · 30/07/2023 21:47

Looks like a nightie sorry

dottydoglover · 30/07/2023 22:04

I like it and would definitely wear it - looks lovely 👍

TennisWithDeborah · 30/07/2023 22:07

I like it and i think you look very good in it.

PaperwhiteTheGhost · 30/07/2023 22:11

Gives me "Dot Cotton working at the laundrette vibes"

Even that gorgeous model looks awful in the pic.

No.

theysaiditgetseasier · 30/07/2023 22:14

I am a carer and most of my female clients are in their late 80's - most of them have nightdresses like this, it's awful 🤣

Iwantamarshmallowman · 30/07/2023 22:17

I love m&s my favorite is the midaxi tea dress. I dont like this dress to be honest but if it looks good on you and you like it then keep it.
