Opinion on this M&S dress

I just bought this dress at M&S. Mainly because it is cotton and I was delighted it was the right length (I'm 5ft 2). There were other dresses I preferred but were ridiculously long.

I'm not sure. It seems simultaneously infantile and similar to my mother's nightdresses. I'm 54. I like the fit though and the colour, I'm a few pounds overweight but I downsized a bit so it's fitted over the bust, like with the model. I think they intend it to be a lot more oversized than that - I bought a 6 which I most definitely am not.

I'll most probably keep it anyway as I don't have any loose dresses, but curious as to people's opinions.

I can't believe people that after 120 posts people are still typing 'grannie's nightie' as if it hasn't been typed dozens of times upthread.

And as if it were some startlingly original insight.

For what it's worth (a) I don't think it looks like a nighty and (b) what does "a grannie's nightie" look like anyway? Aside from honeymoon type glamour nighties don't all nightdresses look more or less like nightdresses?

(Pondering whether the silk vintage one I wore to a ball many years ago was a "grannie's nightie")

Exactly, NatashaDancing.

I'm sorry OP but I don't like it at all .

And, sorry @CherryMaDeara but it does look like a nightdress. Probably people are noting what their granny wears/wore as most people tend to wear PJs now rather than a nightie.

I think I could wear the style in a plain colour, or the print in a more tailored style .

icelollycraving · 31/07/2023 16:43

I’ve seen lots of women of all ages in this style. This particular print reminds me of housecoats my aunties had in the 70s. That may attract you more?!

I love my dresses. I live in them to such an extent that there is a picture of me on a noticeboard at work with trousers on and it has been captioned "XXXX in trousers" as it is such a rare site.

All I can add is small flowers would not be for me. I'm afraid I agree with the person up thread who suggested it looked like a nightie. Sorry OP, but I think you can do loads better.

Honeyandwine · 31/07/2023 18:12

It really does look like a nightie. Sorry OP.

Goodness, that's horrible. The orange is practically luminous.

I have this Grin it's not as bright as it looks in the pic but it is bright! I adore orange though.

Wittow · 01/08/2023 00:01

It's hideous. Sorry.

calmdoon · 01/08/2023 02:40

No just no

Does it not make you consider that if so many people are still typing “granny’s nightie” it does probably look like a granny’s nightie to most people?Grin

Saverage · 01/08/2023 06:56

The words 'granny's nightie' have almost become meaningless at this stage. I'm kind of reading any comments like that in a monotone zombie voice.

MN can be weird. This dress is an unoffensive, pretty, cotton summer dress, which will be very easy and comfortable to wear. It doesn't look like a nighty and it looks very nice on the OP.

There was a wedding guest dress thread a couple of months ago with a truly hideous, frilled wrap over, dipped hem dress made of the type of material you can't stand close to naked flame when wearing. There was page after page after page saying how gorgeous it was/ must have it. it's all subjective but still, that particular dress was something else.

KirstenBlest · 02/08/2023 15:39

It seems compulsory on any M&S or Boden thread to say that all their stuff is hideous and polyester

Do you have a link to the wedding guest thread, NatashaDancing?

The dress in the OP is quite nice.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/08/2023 17:18

I saw the dress in real life today. It didn't make me think 'nightie' but it did make me think '1970s children's dress' - the cotton felt nice but the print/colour didn't do it for me.
