Opinion on this M&S dress

Saverage · 30/07/2023 14:19

I just bought this dress at M&S. Mainly because it is cotton and I was delighted it was the right length (I'm 5ft 2). There were other dresses I preferred but were ridiculously long.

I'm not sure. It seems simultaneously infantile and similar to my mother's nightdresses. I'm 54. I like the fit though and the colour, I'm a few pounds overweight but I downsized a bit so it's fitted over the bust, like with the model. I think they intend it to be a lot more oversized than that - I bought a 6 which I most definitely am not.

I'll most probably keep it anyway as I don't have any loose dresses, but curious as to people's opinions.

I saw the photo on you and it’s much nicer than it looks on the model. I would defintely put a belt around it though to define the waist and give a bit more shape ☺️

PrinceHaz · 30/07/2023 22:30

Dresses like this are ok for tallish people with regular/broad shoulders.

HundredMilesAnHour · 30/07/2023 14:37

Have to assume it's for people going into hospital 😂

It's dreadful. Even a supermodel couldn't make that dress look good.

Agreed.

BakedBeeeen · 30/07/2023 22:39

Bloody hell OP - you look great in it!

full length and fitted much more flattering than mid-calf and wafty.

(PS I said earlier that it was awful, I take it back 😁)

narniabusiness · 30/07/2023 22:42

I love your shoes. Where are they from?

WAY nicer on you than on the model!

It looks lovely, OP and not nightie-ish at all.

Yay the underdog!!!

Flutterbye22 · 30/07/2023 23:38

Not a fan.

looks like something you wear in hospital.

ThatDayIBecameFree · 30/07/2023 23:51

bellac11 · 30/07/2023 19:57

Oh, I take it back OP, I have just seen you in it

Ok, you look much better than the model, it needs to be filled out and now looks quite delicate and summery. Laura Ashley style.

I read this as 'take it back OP' which firmly remains my stance I'm afraid.

JudgeRudy · 31/07/2023 00:07

Sorry but I think the dress is hideous and looks like an old lady's nightie! I think you'd need to be tall and slender to pull this one off and have a cool/aloof air otherwise you'll just look frumpy - unless you're going for the Mrs Brown/Doubtfire look.
On a plus it really does look comfy!

nine9nein · 31/07/2023 00:14

Revolting dress.

I really don't get the obsession with toddler fashion for adults.

Bowbowbo · 31/07/2023 00:37

Hideous

brokenlore · 31/07/2023 01:42

I feel sorry for the model, she's stunning, but that dress just doesn't work on her. Op it looks better on you than the model, but it's just all kinds of wrong, it's twee, it's smocked, it's got a weird tie to the neck, which would be too long for a bow and potential strangulation risk, you have an amazing figure, but the dress hangs all wrong. I think had it been in a cord or denim fabric then it would have been passable, but it really is 'grannies nighty', and just doesn't work.
On the other hand if you like it, you're comfortable in it, then what does it matter if it's not to anyone else's liking? You make it look as good as it's ever going to be, and that's really saying something!

Someoneonlyyouknow · 31/07/2023 03:23

Gosh isn't it funny. We're all assuming the best a dress can look is on a stick thin 6 foot model and our OP makes it look so much better!

Saverage · 31/07/2023 06:14

Thanks for all the comments, good and bad! I've asked for my photo to come down now.

I don't really disagree with what anyone's said, both good and bad. I still like it though yes have some reservations. I will try with a belt as suggested, I don't have one small enough right now as I usually wear them with trousers.

Shoes were from Office a few years ago. A satchel bag is a nice idea. I have a camera bag and a little circle bag, both of which looked fine with it. And for shoes the heels, or some flat silver ones looked ok as well. The chunky flat sandals I originally thought of really didn't work at all.

I think a lot of it for me is nostalgia - I have some of my mum's original Laura Ashley dresses from the 70s. Too small for me, and not a style I'd wear, but I have fondness for them. I also wear other 70s styles, A line cord skirts and dresses. And printwise I like things like Scamp and Dude sweatshirts. I'm not shy of colour or print.

Definitely keeping it though and looking forward to a day warm enough to wear it!

OP, I swear I am not trying to be funny or being deliberately positive to make you feel good, but this looks SO MUCH better on you than the model. It's like they couldn't be bothered to fine a model who's shape worked well with the dress! Your going down in size has worked a treat. It's still not my cup of tea and I wouldn't say I like it but it doesn't look ridiculous on you.

Off-topic, but the talk of vintage dresses reminded me that a Laura Ashley exhibition is underway at a museum if anyone is interested

I like it. You could always tie a denim jacket around your waist if you want to rein it in a bit, but it looks very comfortable.

bluebell34567 · 31/07/2023 10:35

i would remove the strings and wouldnt wear a belt with it.

Waffle78 · 31/07/2023 10:36

I wouldn't wear it I'm 45. It is a bit like a nightie. It's the sort of dress my granny wore.

bluebell34567 · 31/07/2023 10:37

with some accesories it wouldnt look like a night gown, it would look nice.

loveandpoprockz · 31/07/2023 13:05

I’m not a fan. It looks like a granny’s nightie 🤭

PistachioGelato · 31/07/2023 13:15

Love it.

CherryMaDeara · 31/07/2023 13:23

I can't believe people that after 120 posts people are still typing 'grannie's nightie' as if it hasn't been typed dozens of times upthread.

Doggytastic · 31/07/2023 13:37

Sorry buy it looks like an elderly ladies nightie 🙈
