Opinion on this M&S dress

I just bought this dress at M&S. Mainly because it is cotton and I was delighted it was the right length (I'm 5ft 2). There were other dresses I preferred but were ridiculously long.

I'm not sure. It seems simultaneously infantile and similar to my mother's nightdresses. I'm 54. I like the fit though and the colour, I'm a few pounds overweight but I downsized a bit so it's fitted over the bust, like with the model. I think they intend it to be a lot more oversized than that - I bought a 6 which I most definitely am not.

I'll most probably keep it anyway as I don't have any loose dresses, but curious as to people's opinions.

Goodness, that's horrible. The orange is practically luminous.

Its not my style but seeing as 11 people have given it positive reviews it must be someone’s cup of tea.

I’m not a lover of broderie anglaise apart from on trims on tops. I did have a long midi brown M&S broderie anglaise tiered skirt in the 00s, must’ve been my Flake girl boho look! Wink

My Mam had this as a maternity dress in the 80s! Thanks for the nostalgia!
I think if you are blonde I'd order the green M&S one you linked in petite and see if you like it better.

BestestBrownies · 30/07/2023 18:33

Fucking hell, this is a wind up right?!?

It looks like the kind of nightie you pick up in the nearest M&S to the hospital.

But you do you OP

The second and third dresses you posted are much better OP.

The first dress print and shape has been tweaked from a 70s/80s back catalogue of M&S (St Michael). All it needs is a candle in a candlestick and slippers.

OMG that made me laugh.

Amazingly even after all these comments I'm still probably going to keep it.

Is it really! It does seem like a maternity dress.

I will probably get the green one as well.

I personally wouldn’t risk wearing it because of the style. I’m taller then you but bigger as well (size 12 -14) and I look absolutely awful in prints. However a lot of people are more relaxed about this.
It does look like a maternity dress but at your age people won’t make this mistake.
This dress might be a life saver for a menopausal woman stuck in a hot office somewhere.

Saverage · 30/07/2023 19:14

I just tried it on again - I like it with 70s style tan leather platform sandals, and would have 70s silver jewellery. I like the retro vibe of it. It's a keeper Grin

I want to upload a photo but can't (probably just as well, I don't want my delusions destroyed).

I really like the green one. The smock not so much… and all this talking of smocks reminds me of this.

As for the Nora Batty reference @Iknowthis1 , slouchy boots are in vogue so maybe her look is still just a little ahead of the curve!

It's pretty. And looks very comfortable.

I can't upload a photo, the app won't let me. Not sure if I've hit a limit or something.

I read an interview in the paper yesterday with the woman in charge of M&S women's wear. It was a bit of a puff piece about how wonderful the turn around she's done on the offering is. I can't say that I'm that impressed and the 3 dresses the journo said she'd loved all made her look heavy and dumpy. However the thing that really jumped out at me was that the new director had done away with "frumpy" things like bust darts. But actually bust darts are needed to stop clothes hanging off the bust in the worlds most unflattering way and I'd say that this dress is probably a victim of that. Needless to say thei new fashion director is one of those flat chested fashionistas who no doubt tthink male designers who have no idea how to fit to a real life woman are amazing.

I has something really similar from Laura Ashley circa 1975

Why though? Why would anyone wear that? I wouldn't even wear it in bed alone in case it scared the spiders 🤣

CherryMaDeara · 30/07/2023 19:43

I think it looks lovely, OP! You have a great figure.

IncognitoMam · 30/07/2023 19:43

Oh just seen your pic. You actually suit it more than the model!

RedRosie · 30/07/2023 19:46

You look great OP. Ignore the miserable buggers.

minipie · 30/07/2023 19:46

It looks better on you than the model.

However I think you could do a LOT better. Don’t those elasticated bits round the arms annoy you - they would me, especially on a hot day. And will you actually wear it with heels, as it will look more frumpy with flats?

The blue one you posted later looks lovely, has a waist, will do you many more favours. What’s wrong with full length - I’m 5’3 and like a full length dress (unless it was floor scraping).

Mummyoflittledragon · 30/07/2023 19:48

I also think you suit it better than the model. Your figure gives it a lot more shape, more of a vintage Laura Ashley vibe.

bellac11 · 30/07/2023 19:55

I will be absolutely honest and say its awful. Looks like a nightdress.

Doesnt even look good on the model.

The blue one was scraping the floor.

I'm going to snip the elastics on the sleeves, they are too tight (unsurprising as the dress is a size 6 and I'm a 12).

Definitely nicer dresses out there but I will get use out of this, and will look again should the weather get better (and hopefully my weight will have gone down a bit).

Oh, I take it back OP, I have just seen you in it

Ok, you look much better than the model, it needs to be filled out and now looks quite delicate and summery. Laura Ashley style.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/07/2023 19:57

I like the shape on you, but dislike the colour/print. But you like it and that's all that matters.
