Today has put me off floral dresses 😩

I live on the south coast and had a day in the nearest big town today. I had been feeling pretty pleased with the floral dresses I'd bought ready for summer, but after wandering around today I've just totally gone off them. I just feel saturated with seeing floral dresses all day. I love a floral dress as much as the next person but they all started to blend into one, a uniform of floral dresses often paired with the same kind of shoe, it was all a bit much in the end. Anyone else feeling the same?

What is the opposite dress of a summer floral dress though in reality? A self coloured dress? A bit shorter?

I don't like any of Vogue's summer dresses. They don't really suit my lifestyle.

It's the flowers that upset me, it's the frilliness. Puffed sleeves and a frill on the bottom. I'm tall, with wide shoulders and chin length hair. I look like Grayson Perry if I try to wear one. I need 40s tea dresses.

Pack up your dresses for a hol up north you’ll not see any floral midi dresses with white trainers

No because we are all still wearing our jumpers because it's cold haha.
Although been for a run this morning and it was a bit warmer than yesterday Smile

Yes, the shape and puffs and frills really don't work on me - I just look like a large armchair.

So bizarre.

do you think all men “look the same” when they wear shorts and t shirt? Or trousers and shirt?

Yes if they all paired their shorts and trainers with a denim jacket and cross body bag.

Haven't you seen them with their "drugs" cross body bags? Open your eyes @LadyVictoriaSponge

Floral midi (ie below the knee) dresses have been around properly since the 1930s.

Slightly different silhouettes and/or details perhaps, but the overall effect is the same.

They're a classic, not a fashion. They're not going anywhere anytime soon. The idea is nearly 100 years old now!

Same as jeans are not going anywhere since becoming mainstream, from their original purpose as basic workwear.

isthismylifenow · 02/06/2023 09:49

We have just come out of summer, and I think that look may have finally started to fade. Plain colour t-shirt dresses seemed to be more popular last season.

But being in another country, I have picked up that our fashion trends are quite different.

I do not mind a floral dress. But what bothers me a lot if they are from a fast fashion shop, is that the patterns do not line up on the seams. I cannot help myself but this is all I see when I see them being worn. I have real OCD about this.

Hence why I usually only wear block colours, as stripes are equally guilty.

Well when I do see this combo of hoards of men at the Chelsea flower show, or in my local beer garden and they are all wearing “drugs” cross body bags, denim jacket, shorts, t shirt and white trainers, yes I would think they looked like they were wearing a uniform and looked ubiquitous.

Didn't the floral midis use to be worn back then with little white tennis shoes? So that is nothing new either.

Cantonet · 02/06/2023 09:57

I really enjoy seeing floral dresses on individuals even though they're not my thing, as long as they're not topped with the ubiquitous denim jacket. I've seen gorgeous ones on all sizes this spring. I'm very much over denim with florals. However I abhor cross body bags. Especially on non-skinnys as they just accentuate the fact that you're not.

Nottodaty · 02/06/2023 10:01

I’m mid 40’s - currently have a peri stomach & constantly feel hot and bothered. Never been a floaty dress wearer till now - it’s perfect i can walk around I don’t end up sweaty uncomfortable and feeling like my clothes irrate me - also getting the right cut means people don’t ask me with a confused face when I’m due.
I couldn’t give a monkeys whether there is a sea of us all looking the same - I only care that I’m comfortable :)

and everyone has to appear "non skinny"?

Blip · 02/06/2023 10:10

I like colourful clothes and it's neutrals that I find dull as ditchwater!

Qilin · 02/06/2023 10:11

Is it really any different to pretty much every man of a certain age in the summer wearing a pair of chino shorts and a shirt with the sleeves rolled up or a polo top?

Do you reckon they are ever concerned about why they are wearing the same type of clothes as those around them?

I've worn dresses for years and rarely wear skirts or trousers/jeans.
I've no desire to dress for others.
I'm clean, smartish, tidy and dressed appropriately for where I am going. Dh likes the way I look/dress so dressing in a sexual manner for anyone else doesn't interest me.

Dress how you want.
Don't fuss about what others chose to wear.

You can be interested in style and beauty without being critical of others

and sure as heck not being supportive of a poster describing an outfit as “strikingly asexual”

Agree.

There have been several threads about floral dresses over the past few months, and I don't think any of them have bought anything new to the conversation - some love floral dresses, others do not, and some posters in the latter camp are incredibly sneery.

Prompted by this thread, I did look in my wardrobe to see how many floral dresses I own. I was surprised to find just two - one Isabel Marant (at least a decade old, the other, a Raey slip dress, almost as old). I do have several jackets with a floral print though, so maybe this is why I thought I had more, but no, while I have several polka dot dresses, the majority of the dresses I own don't have a pattern or print at all, although some are heavily textured.

But that's me, and just because I tend not to wear them, I would never pass judgement on others who do - for many women who don't know what to wear in the summer, a floral dress is the easy solution.

SaxSick · 02/06/2023 10:11

Some of the best floral dresses were in a TV series called Indian Summers - beautiful.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 02/06/2023 09:18

But they still look all the same. no matter what the hairstyle etc, no individuality at all, just a sea of white trainers and floral dresses.

Surely everyone looks much the same in whatever the fashion of the day is?

Depends how far up north. I'm in Yorkshire and wearing dresses, many of which are long and floral. Have done for years. When the weather's cooler I have leggings in underneath by dress.

In the winter/autumn I wear dresses too, again some probably have some form of floral pattern. Wear them with thick tights and boots/shoes, whereas in the summer/spring I tend to wear pumps or trainers, sometimes a ballet flat.

Ha ha @Anoisagusaris You call me a "thundering sneering bitch" for trying to thoughtfully articulate my fashion preferences/ dislikes! It's not personal, you know.....Seems I hit a nerve.

Do you really think that your post was OK? Not at all sneezy or bitchy?

I see face, height, hair colour and style, body shape.

The thought that some of your sneering and judging are mothers…. Is actually a bit disturbing.

The thread is in Style (as opposed to unstylish) and Beauty (opposite to ugly). Therefore the judgement is implied already.

Its not the florals as they come out every year. It’s the same style of dress with the same accessories. I prefer the chunky boot look with them myself.

Beaverbridge · 02/06/2023 10:30

A girl got on the bus I was on yesterday, she had on a 60,s style light green suit, neat handbag. Beautiful beige high heels. Her hair was up in a roll at the back. When she got off I could see she had perfect make up on expertly applied to my inexperienced eye. Everyone on bus well all the oldies were saying how stunning she was.
On return journey an older couple got on. The lady had on a lemon dress, denim jacket and white trainers.. She looked lovely, her partner looked like loads of other men. Shorts, polo shirt, sandals. Each to their own.

MrsFrisbyMouse · 02/06/2023 10:33

Isn't it all just a matter of perspective?

If you actually looked at the women wearing the floral dress/trainer 'uniform' - there would actually be a lot of differentiation in terms of patterns/style/accessories etc.

To be honest I don't see it as any different from those who choose to dress in a more classic minimalist reduced pallette 'uniform' - it can look a bit like a sea of beige/white/black/ - unless you are into that sort of thing -and can differentiate the designer handbags and shoes etc.

It always saddens me that we live in a world where to feel better about the choices we make we look for validation by othering people and defining ourselves as 'not'. You can appreciate and enjoy your version of style and beauty without denigrating someone else. Things can just sometimes 'be' without having to be 'not'.
