Good quality crossbody bag up to £800.00

gentlydirk · 10/03/2023 15:37

Hello

It's a handbag thread! My favourite crossbody bag has finally worked itself to the ground and I'm looking for a replacement one if anyone has any recommendations!

What I'm replacing is a medium sized square brown leather bag which had two internal pockets, a small pocket on the outside and on the back an extra pocket that zipped open all the way and had space for cards, pens and bits of paper. I've never really seen anything that has matched, I have no idea of the brand it was brought in a vintage shop in my mid 20's (quite some years ago)! It was fairly small but seemed to fit everything inside it and more! What I'm describing is probably looking a camera bag with extra compartments.

It was one of my favourite things so am willing to spend up to £800.00 to replace it as it's going to be used quite a bit. I would prefer brown or oxblood but am open to some nice others like burnt orange etc, the only ones I can't have are navy or black as that's my main clothing palette!

Thank you!

I’m having a really good time on this thread and I’ve had some great recommendations! I’m glad you are enjoying it as well @Stoechas. I love looking at nice things and I’m definitely going to be posting on this board some more there are some very knowledgeable people on here and I can get some more good recommendations.

I really love seeing women spending and enjoying money on things they enjoy at any price! It’s all entirely relative as @HeavenIsAHalfpipe and your son sounds so lovely and I hope he makes a real success of his channel 🙂.

I have seen these kinds of threads go a bit ugly but I actually made it to the mumsnet troll subreddit on Reddit as a “goady fucker” which has made me laugh.

Yes but if it's something you will use daily you are better off paying for something of quality. I have a Louis vuttion bag I use most days , it cost over €1000 euro and is still perfect two years later. I believe in quality over quantity. I'm not rich or the other half . I don't have loads of handbags just a couple of high quality designer ones.

@YYetAnotherBeckyMumsnet I can assure you I have no desire to derail a thread. Just to make a comment, with no malice or envy, about spending £800 on a bag.

That is actually derailing the thread though. Quite literally.

JackieDaws · 11/03/2023 13:20

I'd have probably saved a bit more money and bought the Balenciaga Bin Liner Bag as a massive fuck you to the whiners on this thread.

Enjoy your bag, OP. Polene bags are beautiful and such amazing quality.

Florissant · 11/03/2023 13:22

OP, £800 is beyond my budget but I love the constructive suggestions other posters have made. Congratulations on finding your dream bag!

And, maybe someday, I'll be the one asking for recommendations...

RockaLock · 11/03/2023 13:23

The polene you've chosen looks lovely, OP.

Will you come back when you've got it and let us know what you think? I've been looking online for ages at the numero uno nano, and am currently trying to persuade DH that our next weekend away could be Paris.

He doesn't know this is just so that I can go to the polene shop Grin

gentlydirk · 11/03/2023 13:27

I will @RockaLock, it might be a few weeks until I get to open it up as I’m not here for a few weeks so it’s being collected and looked after for me until I get back. I’m sure a weekend in a Paris is just what he would need, so much culture, history and lovely food and what a coincidence that there is a shop for you as well!

WombatBombat · 11/03/2023 13:29

Love that Polene!

Really enjoyed most of this thread and seeing women unashamedly taking joy in well-designed, well-made, beautiful items that “spark joy” when we use them.

I love Honey & Toast as they are made down the road from me in Somerset, they have real customer service and I know which experts have made which elements of my bag. It truly feels crafted.

There has always been an element of escapism about the S&B board, so thanks for starting the thread and I’m glad you’ve got what you need!

I agree with you, but beyond a certain cost, I just can't see how the extra cost buys you extra quality/longevity?

I've spent £200 on a bag before and it's lasted for years without any visible wear. On a 'cost per wear' basis bags that cost £800/1000 euro sort of level would have to outlast the person they belong to be worth the investment on cost alone.

This thread has everything though. Even a classic 'tripped up by autocorrect' where a poster apparently admitted to having never heard of Poland Grin

Floofydawg · 11/03/2023 13:32

@BarbaraofSeville lots of higher end bags hold their value for resale, so if you fancy a change you can sell on and buy something else.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/03/2023 13:33

MrsDoyle351 · 11/03/2023 06:54

Not only are the bags super expensive but also extremely non descript /plain boring looking. ie the Mulberry Antony - with a canvas strap - Just - REALLY??

I could understand paying up to £150 for a really nice handbag that's good quality leather etc as a special treat/birthday present - but £800?

But 150 to you will be the equivalent of 800 to someone with a bigger budget. If you chose well there will be a difference in quality and cut, the same as there will be between a 15 and a 150 bag. Do you think you shouldn’t buy 150 bag just because a lot of people could only afford 15 or nothing at all??

But more to the point, why do you feel the need to rain on someone else’s pleasure? The OP has started a thread to buy a treat for herself. It’s unkind to derail it.

gentlydirk · 11/03/2023 13:47

I expected some comments @JackieDaws I’ve seen it before and I get it in my real life too, it really doesn’t bother me. I’m going to my best friends wedding in the summer so I might make a post asking for some fancy outfit ideas 😁.

As @WombatBombat said it’s nice to see women having some fun as obviously we’re not supposed to have a once in quite a few years treat and a bit of frivolity!

For anyone wondering I’m not depriving anyone of food or heating to pay for a bag! I just wanted a replacement for a much loved bag that I have had for a very long time! I asked here because I haven’t actually brought a pricier bag before and there are lots of threads with some good recommendations, the bag I am replacing cost about £15 and it was a once in lifetime second hand find (I’m going to mourn it so much) as it was such good quality and so cheap. My money is mine that I earned and I don’t feel guilty.

It is my life's ambition to own a Chanel handbag. Does that make me shallow?

Mine too 😂😂 no it means you have good taste😜

user6757539345 · 11/03/2023 14:23

The Polene number one is gorgeous. I like the 10 best though. I wish I could go somewhere like the Royal Opera House that meant I could justify buying beautiful things.

I suppose I could dress up for my 2-mile schlep through the drizzle to Asda😢

Could we have some more lovely handbag suggestions to spaff our imaginary riches on, please?

Thank you very much! It’s looking like Mulberry, Honey and Toast, Polene, Chloe and Aspinal all get some good recommendations but I’m going to be looking at all the links. I’m near some good shops and so I can go and have a browse in person and stroke them! Sorry I’m struggling to tag everyone!

I knew I’d be getting some comments on the price of the bag, as a budget it’s a maximum not a target so I’m happy to consider from anywhere but as the last bag I used almost daily for about 15 years I’m hoping to be getting some similar wear. I feel no guilt! The money is mine and I’m going to spend it.

Great choice @gentlydirk that’s lovely! I’d not heard of Polene before but love the Tonca so that may find its way into my collection!

Pigtailsandall · 11/03/2023 15:22

@gentlydirk love that bag! I'd heard of Polene before and bag from them is on my wishlist. Let me know what it's like!

It's my birthday soon and I just got a (small) payrise so I'm going to get a new bag soon. I'm considering the Polene, or maybe the Osprey Resort bag, or the Honey and Toast Ava satchel. Excited to hear if anyone has either of those?

Might get 2 as I love the resort bag in raffia and would also like a black one.

NeedWineNow · 11/03/2023 15:30

Hi @Pigtailsandall could you post a link to the Osprey Resort bag please? I've been looking for a raffia bag and can't find it online.

Pigtailsandall · 11/03/2023 15:33

@NeedWineNow sorry, an an idiot! It's not Osprey (my backpack is Osprey, duh) but Aspinal resort bag!!

Do we think that if there were men on a thread discussing which high end watch to buy it would meet with such negativity?
I don't think so.

Bless you @gentlydirk . What a lovely comment. I will pass it on. Would love to see DC's youtube channel get 100s of 1000s of subs! Grin
