Good quality crossbody bag up to £800.00

gentlydirk · 10/03/2023 15:37

Hello

It's a handbag thread! My favourite crossbody bag has finally worked itself to the ground and I'm looking for a replacement one if anyone has any recommendations!

What I'm replacing is a medium sized square brown leather bag which had two internal pockets, a small pocket on the outside and on the back an extra pocket that zipped open all the way and had space for cards, pens and bits of paper. I've never really seen anything that has matched, I have no idea of the brand it was brought in a vintage shop in my mid 20's (quite some years ago)! It was fairly small but seemed to fit everything inside it and more! What I'm describing is probably looking a camera bag with extra compartments.

It was one of my favourite things so am willing to spend up to £800.00 to replace it as it's going to be used quite a bit. I would prefer brown or oxblood but am open to some nice others like burnt orange etc, the only ones I can't have are navy or black as that's my main clothing palette!

Thank you!

Is it? Is it really 'mean' - I am pointing out the bleeding obvious - not trying to be mean.

You know why? Because to an awful lot of folk in the world £800 on a little bag to hang across your body is absolutely fucking ridiculous!!!!

@HallucinationQ - my thoughts entirely - but you are a lot more polite than me Grin

I think its wonderful that the OP has £800 to spend on a bag.

But it IS like another world to me, and I see no reason why I shouldn't say that on MN

I'm not being nasty or envious or jealous. I just could not afford to spend £800 on a bag, and the idea, for me, is strange and rather wasteful (for me 🙂). However, an £800 bag which lasts 30 years and is used regularly , is probably good value (I just couldn't imagine having enough money for the initial outlay)

We all have different values, ideas, thoughts..... expressing mine is not a means of raining on the OPs parade.

As I am sure that the OP, in starting this thread, wasn't aiming to stealth boast, it was simply a means of gleaning info.

And to a lot of people it's not. Or it's something that someone has saved up for. Or they want to spunk the family food bill up the wall this month on that instead. What it's not, is any concern of yours.

There's an increasing trend on MN for people to come on threads ( especially on S&B) and post supercilious snidey digs at people wanting to do anything remotely seen as 'frivolous.' It's tedious, it derails the topic and becomes a self serving holier than thou narrative. Just move along if it doesn't interest you, because I can guarantee you that not one single person having read your post will think " Oh my God! She's right! I will henceforth brush my hair with twigs and wear only rags I find caught on bushes along the sides of Motorways!"

Not only are the bags super expensive but also extremely non descript /plain boring looking. ie the Mulberry Antony - with a canvas strap - Just - REALLY??

I could understand paying up to £150 for a really nice handbag that's good quality leather etc as a special treat/birthday present - but £800?

Why are you so bothered?

This thread isn't about IF OP should spend £800 on a bag though. It's like people can't possibly understand people spend on different things. £800 is all relative and it's not even what you earn it's how you mange your money too.

Perhaps you would not spend £800 on a bag. Most of us have a vice and choose to spend money on different things. It's the same with the holiday threads too...

Perhaps OP has saved, perhaps someone gifted her money, perhaps OP is upto her eye balls in debt to buy a £800 bag....

MN is taken for gospel at times (not digesting your lying OP) just making a general point.

In the correct context, absolutely fine
.
On a thread where someone is asking for advice; about buying a bag, on S&B - not so fine. Just plain horrible.

This!

Oh shut up. You know you could just not open the thread - the title is clear.

Personally I'm not a fan of the Antony, I think it's a bit masculine looking. I do have the Darley and it's lovely, if a little small. My favourite bag is the Gucci cross body but I don't think they sell them any more.

Why are either of you in the thread then? The budget was in the title. Or did you come here just to make snide remarks?

Wagsandclaws · 11/03/2023 07:30

OP I'm a bag lady, I have several high end bags and for your budget I would be looking at Aspinal.

The quality is amazing and they have some outstanding sales and lots of crossbody options.

Another lesser known brand is Polene, they have a reputation for high end leather and designs for around the £3/400 mark - they really are gorgeous.

I used to have a few mulberry's but then I moved to Somerset and the mulberry outlet is an 8 min drive from me so they are everywhere 🤣 good quality though if a little overpriced.

There are plenty of people who would find spending £150 on a bag ridiculous- it’s all relative.

The fact that you think it's so obvious yet felt the need to point it out makes it not just mean, but quite deliberately mean. I wonder why, if you think it's so bleeding obvious, you decided to take time out of your day to tell OP, very publicly.

It's an attempt to shake someone for affording a handbag that others can't. That's the very definition of mean.

So yes, it really is 'mean'

moonpixel · 11/03/2023 07:46

An attempt to SHAME

Thedreammuststayalive · 11/03/2023 08:00

I already mentioned Louis Vuitton Alma bb , also there’s Gucci Marmont which again you can get preloved for your budget good luck let us know what you go for

SuperSange · 11/03/2023 08:06

I don't have £800 to spend on a bag. But here's the thing; all the PP who have opened up a thread with the info that they don't like IN THE TITLE have done so specially to be outraged. And then maintain that they're not outraged.

How about if you don't like the title of a thread, which is very clear as to the content, you just don't open it? It's the very definition of shitty martyrdom to open a thread just to comment that you don't like it.

MrsDoyle351 · 11/03/2023 08:12

@SuperSange

yep - whatever

I never said I wasn't outraged. I most certainly am.

Thanks for the capital letters in your post - as I really wouldn't have understood otherwise.

StephenDedalus · 11/03/2023 08:13

Oh god the dreary pious are out again....dull, dull, dull.

OP ignore. We don't know how or why you have this money to spend on a bag but it's a great thing & god knows it seems like the British economy needs people to support it by spending at the moment (assuming you're British etc etc)

Anyway back to the FAR more interesting topic of beautiful bags...I'm looking at a Polene bag at the moment. I like their styles.

I have a mulberry which I got in an outlet & it was v good value & beautifully made.

I'm also v interested in an isabel marant & think she has some beautiful designs at the moment.

Good luck & enjoy choosing

Lykia · 11/03/2023 08:23

Blush Oops just realised all my links are for the same bag.

Op I linked bags from APC and a Chloe Marcie.

sixfoot · 11/03/2023 08:30

Ignoring the side show….

what about a PS1? I LOVE mine. Understated and excellent quality. I wear it cross body. Very spacious.

JoanOgden · 11/03/2023 08:38

I have a decent quality bag like this from Visconti which cost me about £70. Many different versions, e.g.

viscontibags.co.uk/collections/all-bags/products/vesper-messenger-bag-a5

(Realise the OP is looking for something more high end but others may find this useful)

Schmutter · 11/03/2023 08:45

I have a Mulberry Amberley satchel in oak. It’s a perfect size. I think it was £850 ish. The colour is fab and I get so much use out of it.

I also have a Mulberry Darley satchel in black. It’s smaller, but I use it a lot.

reelcat · 11/03/2023 08:51

Honey & toast are lovely quality leather and their customer service is fantastic as @WombatBombat says the Katie is like a tardis! I can fit so much in including a spare change of top/leggings/pants for my youngest! The Libby looks like a good size if you want something larger. If you aren't sure contact them on Instagram and the owner will send extra pics etc to help check it is what you are looking for. honeyandtoast.co.uk/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA6rCgBhDVARIsAK1kGPLBh5jG-SqK7Hv9mcB5LUN4F7Ux7WafLIRzkqYAmCPzzE4k-E481wEaAtZWEALw_wcB

@MrsDoyle351 can you not just move on without hijacking’s the thread? Lots of people can’t and lots of people can. Is this not a place where it is inclusive and people can get appropriate advice without the risk of snide comments and judgement?

yapperpapper · 11/03/2023 08:56

I would say mulberry too or Gucci. Might be worth trying some outlets for Mulberry, for Bicester and Cheshire oaks you can order on WhatsApp and have virtual appointments where they give you an idea on stock and send pictures. You will easily get something for that budget, camera bags are around £260 as a starting point at the moment. I have a gucci bag coming from a personal shopping service in Bicester, it’s this but in black leather and is £535 www.gucci.com/uk/en_gb/pr/women/handbags/crossbody-bags-for-women/ophidia-gg-supreme-mini-bag-p-51735096IWS8745

Floofydawg · 11/03/2023 08:59

@yapperpapper I love that Gucci bag.
