Good quality crossbody bag up to £800.00

Hello

It's a handbag thread! My favourite crossbody bag has finally worked itself to the ground and I'm looking for a replacement one if anyone has any recommendations!

What I'm replacing is a medium sized square brown leather bag which had two internal pockets, a small pocket on the outside and on the back an extra pocket that zipped open all the way and had space for cards, pens and bits of paper. I've never really seen anything that has matched, I have no idea of the brand it was brought in a vintage shop in my mid 20's (quite some years ago)! It was fairly small but seemed to fit everything inside it and more! What I'm describing is probably looking a camera bag with extra compartments.

It was one of my favourite things so am willing to spend up to £800.00 to replace it as it's going to be used quite a bit. I would prefer brown or oxblood but am open to some nice others like burnt orange etc, the only ones I can't have are navy or black as that's my main clothing palette!

Thank you!

Why are either of you in the thread then? The budget was in the title. Or did you come here just to make snide remarks?

Yep came here to make snide remarks. Imagine if people did that on a posts where people are asking for cheap recipes or something and they judge that, it’s seems when people have the money to spend on items like this boundaries are down and it’s a free for all to be nasty. It’s just ridiculous someone wants some advice and there are posters deciding to be nasty and judgemental about it.

Or they want to spunk the family food bill up the wall this month on that instead. What it's not, is any concern of yours.

This!

Um no, this would not be ok. I’d judge someone really hard if they did this.

I adore high end designer bags, but they’re for if I have spare money after paying bills, mortgage, school fees, pension, and filled up my ISA allowance that year.

OP, I’m sure your finances are fine. I’d go for Mulberry Antony (if they’re not overdone in your area) or Aspinal or APC which are both beautifully designed and great quality.

DameCelia · 11/03/2023 09:08

@MrsDoyle351 and @HallucinationQ just out of curiosity, do you police what men spend their money on? I suspect not!
How a woman chooses to spend money she has access to is her business, not yours.
Just because you can't/ wouldn't afford it doesn't make it wrong.

And in answer to the actual question: that's a slightly difficult price point @gentlydirk . Not quite Gucci money, but as others have pointed out you'd get something second hand. A lot higher than 'high street luxury' such as Aspinal or Coach. Personally I'm not a Mulberry fan but it may be a good shout for what you're after.
Alternatively have you thought about having something made? A copy of your existing bag could be made by a leather worker.

gentlydirk · 11/03/2023 09:09

Thank you very much! It’s looking like Mulberry, Honey and Toast, Polene, Chloe and Aspinal all get some good recommendations but I’m going to be looking at all the links. I’m near some good shops and so I can go and have a browse in person and stroke them! Sorry I’m struggling to tag everyone!

I knew I’d be getting some comments on the price of the bag, as a budget it’s a maximum not a target so I’m happy to consider from anywhere but as the last bag I used almost daily for about 15 years I’m hoping to be getting some similar wear. I feel no guilt! The money is mine and I’m going to spend it.

I got a Gucci Disco. Been used loads and still looks great. Ignore the misery's on this thread. Your request was clear and other posters have put it far more eloquently than me.

TheClash2023 · 11/03/2023 09:29

I looked high and low for a comfortable one and found Osprey to be the nicest. Can't find a link to mine but really happy with it and soft leather

MoveOnTheCards · 11/03/2023 09:29

Another vote for Aspinal for cross-body. Fabulous quality.

Purplecatshopaholic · 11/03/2023 09:38

Voting for the Mulberry Antony here - I have the apricot one and love it

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 11/03/2023 09:39

Hi folks. We take a pretty dim view of attempts to derail threads. Please don't do this.

Westfacing · 11/03/2023 09:58

A useful thread for me although my budget is much lower - the Wanderers website looks interesting.

When travelling I've been using small Kipling crossbody bags for passport, cards, phone etc, plus a tote for Kindle, glasses, tissues, etc. The tote gets a bit unmanageable, keeps slipping off shoulder, when you're trying to negotiate the Tube/bus as well as a suitcase.

So I'm on the lookout for a big enough crossbody, but not too big!

Hi OP,

Some great suggestions on here. I purchased a Burberry bag yesterday and noticed they had some lovely styles in the colours you're after.
I also recommend Aspinal and Mulberry and love mine. They've been going for ages.
I had a mooch on Farfetch, Matches and The Outnet yesterday. You can refine your searches right down to suit what you're looking for.

Do come back and update on what you've purchased.

What's mean, is telling people their spending is fucking ridiculous when no-one asked for their opinion.

Anyhoo.

I have a couple of Wanderers bags and gave found them great.

Well, then you and the OP/me/others obviously move in very different circles. And that's ok 🤷

Prinnny · 11/03/2023 10:23

Someone left the door open at the bitter and twisted farm clearly…yawn

OP if your budget stretches slightly I really like the Gucci Ophidia, I find it really durable and easy wearing, I think one of smaller ones would be in budget actually.

Why are you posting on this threada@HallucinationQ other than to make the OP feel bad (which she absolutely shouldn't) it's v controlling

But posters talk about long-haul family holidays which must cost thousands, new kitchens and extensions which can cost 10s of thousands - do you have the same natural reaction to those?

MN is a chat forum - people post about all sorts of things.

It's not as though the OP asked about an £800 bag on a Cost of Living or Inflation thread, she posted in Style & Beauty which I think is reasonable.

SD1978 · 11/03/2023 10:32

So don't look/ comment/ open a thread that clearly offends you about someone who has and will spend money on a bag.......It's pretty bloody simple. You wouldn't/ couldn't, no problem. OP can and will so you're opinions on whether it's a large amount of money or not is irrelevant to the question...... loving the Mulberry one personally

yapperpapper · 11/03/2023 10:33

@HallucinationQ I think you need to move on. You’ve given you I asked for opinion and projected enough. Unless you have a bag recommendation which is what the thread is about then I would move on.

@Prinnny oh good to here and I recommended that one earlier, I have it in the post and have had really good reviews. That and the Gucci bree bags are around £500 at Bicester

ChungusBoi · 11/03/2023 10:34

Buying the best quality you can within budget and using it until it is beyond repair is a responsible thing. Whether your budget is large or small.

OP, it isn’t necessary to spend that much on a bag to enjoy the quality you are looking for. There are some gorgeous Italian bags that cost less than this because they are not well known brands, just family businesses that have been quietly doing their thing, sometimes for decades.

I also got a leather bag in mint condition from a charity shop - not the quality level you are looking for here, but a RRP of £225 for £25. You have to get lucky to get a bargain obviously, but I wouldn’t dismiss second hand goods that have been well looked after.
