Good quality crossbody bag up to £800.00

Hello

It's a handbag thread! My favourite crossbody bag has finally worked itself to the ground and I'm looking for a replacement one if anyone has any recommendations!

What I'm replacing is a medium sized square brown leather bag which had two internal pockets, a small pocket on the outside and on the back an extra pocket that zipped open all the way and had space for cards, pens and bits of paper. I've never really seen anything that has matched, I have no idea of the brand it was brought in a vintage shop in my mid 20's (quite some years ago)! It was fairly small but seemed to fit everything inside it and more! What I'm describing is probably looking a camera bag with extra compartments.

It was one of my favourite things so am willing to spend up to £800.00 to replace it as it's going to be used quite a bit. I would prefer brown or oxblood but am open to some nice others like burnt orange etc, the only ones I can't have are navy or black as that's my main clothing palette!

Thank you!

So don't look/ comment/ open a thread that clearly offends you about someone who has and will spend money on a bag.......It's pretty bloody simple. You wouldn't/ couldn't, no problem. OP can and will so you're opinions on whether it's a large amount of money or not is irrelevant to the question...... loving the Mulberry one personally

Exactly. Different people, different views/lifestyles. Please leave these threads alone if you are just going to be goady! Some of us just want to talk about our handbags!

NeedNwJeans · 11/03/2023 10:37

OP, if you do find the bag matching your description, please report back! Especially the outside pocket I'm always looking but sadly not many (nice) bags have it.

sixfoot · 11/03/2023 10:38

I spent £3.7k on a bag once. No regrets at all!

enjoy shopping OP!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 11/03/2023 10:38

I hope I'm not being a troll by saying I'm not a Mulberry fan. Find them staid and overdone. MN has a real thing for them though.

If it was me I'd spend it on Polene numero sept. And then I'd have enough money left over to also buy myself the Maje fringed bag. And I'd feel delighted with life Grin

God I can't cope if S&B gets infiltrated by the twats off other threads. It's my happy place!
I love looking at all the links on here as i love bags.
I have an alternate suggestion though, if you love it OP, you could take it to a leather shop (probably an independent one) and get them to make it again for you. You could choose your colour and type of leather and fittings etc. Even have an extra pocket or two added etc
A friend did this as she could not find a replacement for her much loved bag and she loves it

So clearly you can't afford an £800 bag, so why are you being so bitter because someone else can?

Well good for you. They'll probably be from some god awful slave labour country and will fall apart after 3 months ending up in landfill whereas the OP with her £800 bag will be supporting good craftsmanship with an item that lasts for decades.

Btw I can't afford £800 on a bag either but totally love watching someone else choose one.

@MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake I got a Maje fringed bag at Christmas & LOVE it & I'm also perusing the Polene site at the moment!

StephenDedalus · 11/03/2023 10:44

I'm interested in the Polene Tonka for spring / summer & just need to decide which colour

Oh lovely present to get! Are you impressed with the quality of the bag?

I'm thinking of buying myself one for my birthday next month,

SRS29 · 11/03/2023 10:56

OP another vote for Mulberry, some of mine are 20+ years old and still look fab. Others mention the Anthony, I have 3 and my chocolate brown is 15 years old and looks better with age. Lots of TLC with creams etc but worth it. Happy shopping!

OP I'm a bag lady, I have several high end bags and for your budget I would be looking at Aspinal.

The quality is amazing and they have some outstanding sales and lots of crossbody options.

Another lesser known brand is Polene, they have a reputation for high end leather and designs for around the £3/400 mark - they really are gorgeous.

I used to have a few mulberry's but then I moved to Somerset and the mulberry outlet is an 8 min drive from me so they are everywhere 🤣 good quality though if a little overpriced.

Where in Somerset is it please???

ThePoshUns · 11/03/2023 11:04

I love my Fossil Jolie crossbody. You could buy several with your budget!

Aurorabored · 11/03/2023 11:04

Polène bags are really beautifully made.

StephenDedalus · 11/03/2023 11:05

@MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake I know! It was a fabulous present.
I actually got mine at a maje outlet so was a little less ££ than usual.
Mines chocolate crocodile skin effect & I'm very impressed. I have not used the shoulder strap so far but I've used it going for dinner / out at night several times just using it like a handbag / clutch

It's been admired each time I've used it

What colour are you thinking?

Read MNHQ’s post. And then read it again.

I’ve got a Mulberry Billie in Oak on order. Simple and a great size.

StephenDedalus · 11/03/2023 11:13

Oh that's great to hear @Aurorabored as I've never seen one in real life but am really interested

Demellier bags look lovely if you like something less causal than Mulberry demellierlondon.com/collections/cross-body-bags

StephenDedalus · 11/03/2023 11:18

Actually Ally Capellino is well worth a look too. I have a really fabulous leather tote bag that I use regularly for the past 4 years

She does some lovely leather cross body bags too

If you search on YouTube you can see ‘unboxing’ videos. I have no idea who the people are but it lets you see more of the bags!

StephenDedalus · 11/03/2023 11:24

@Aurorabored when I order mine I will be happy to share a pic if anyone's interested

smellyflowers · 11/03/2023 11:24

Enjoy your bag shopping. I am enjoying looking at the suggestions. So much good taste!

ChungusBoi · 11/03/2023 11:25

Check out Gianni Conti bags. Mine is over 25 years old, has worn well and will give plenty of change from £800. The leather quantity is excellent and it’s well put together. The caveat is that the quality of the leather or workmanship could have changed radically in 25 years, so try to go and have a look at some in person.

If I was replacing it, which I will probably need to do in the next few years, I would incorporate some shopping for a bag in person the next time I’m in Italy for work 😊 Or check out some UK based leather craftspeople who can make you a bag to order. Some of the brands you’re considering sound nice too. I’d look at them all. A friend has a Loewe puzzle bag and it’s beautifully made but I doubt you’d find one for £800.

gentlydirk · 11/03/2023 11:30

I have actually made a purchase! I have gone for the Polene number seven in dark brown as I just fell in love the moment I saw it so thank you @Wagsandclaws and others
for the suggestion!

I’ll be having a look for another small bag as well so I can give it a rest, I’m going down a hole 😁
