Why do people go on about pockets in dresses?

I don’t get the love for this. You don’t out things in the pockets and you don’t stand / walk about with your hands in them so why do people love them?! Please enlighten me!

Obviously the answer is that some people like to put things in their pockets and some people like to put their hands in their pockets 😂.

Exactly!

Only about 1% of dresses have pockets so it's hardly difficult to avoid if you don't

VariationsonaTheme · 24/02/2023 08:29

I put things in my pockets, and I often put my hands in my pockets too!

hryllilegur · 24/02/2023 08:29

I put things in pockets. I am always dismayed when I don’t have any because I’ve nowhere to put my keys.

I don’t own a handbag. So I use my pockets like men do.

MichelleScarn · 24/02/2023 08:29

Why wouldn't you put things/hands in pockets if you had them?!

boathouse20 · 24/02/2023 08:29

Because I put things in the pockets and stand/walk about with my hands in my pockets...... am I wrong?

CharmedUndead · 24/02/2023 08:30

I put things in the pockets. Dead convenient. That's why.

BendingSpoons · 24/02/2023 08:31

At work, I put my phone in my pocket when I walk around the building. My clinic room isn't locked and I don't want it stolen. Even just round the house this is useful at times.

When I put the bins out, I put my keys in my pocket. I can then shut the front door and not let all the heat out.

In the summer, I do the school run with my phone and keys in my pocket. (In winter I put it in my coat pocket). Means I don't need a bag which is better for my neck/shoulders.

hryllilegur · 24/02/2023 08:31

surely having pockets is a better storage solution than sticking your phone on your bra? That’s a common workaround for many women.

I love it when people say 'you' when actually they mean 'I'.

I want somewhere to put lip salve and a tissue.

DangerPigeon · 24/02/2023 08:32

Are you one of these weird people that doesn't put things in your pockets?

PuppyMonkey · 24/02/2023 08:33

I often feel a little wary about putting, say, a phone in the pocket of a dress. I worry it will drop out. Also, it makes the dress hang funny.

IGoWalkingAfterMidnight · 24/02/2023 08:33

Because pockets are not just political, they are a feminist symbol!

AlisonDonut · 24/02/2023 08:33

I'd wear/buy more dresses if they had pockets.

In my pockets right now, are a grafting knife, a cat tick remover and a few plant labels. In the autumn I mainly fill mine with seed heads harvested as I walk round the garden.

This.

It's such an obvious answer I'm amazed it didn't come to you in the time in took you to type the question, op.

i do both. But as someone who makes my own clothes i know how putting things in pockets changes the line of a garment so it's mostly small things like tissues and some money (notes) in light garments, phone, money, keys in heavier garments.

Lucky me, i have massive boobs so i use my bra when there are no pockets. But as an allergy sufferer i would prefer pockets for my tissues.

Hartlebury · 24/02/2023 08:35

I do.

Curriedpeanuts · 24/02/2023 08:35

We basically need more pockets, and practical pockets. Not little tiny hanging pockets but proper secure concealed pockets. Saves walking around with a bag the whole time.

Huh? We don't want pockets for decoration we want to put things in them. 🤔

SummaLuvin · 24/02/2023 08:37

they can be functional, but I don’t like the way they look. They add bulk (on my hips where I don’t want it), they rarely have the proper structure to support a heavy item like a phone in the way jeans do, and they typically aren’t secure. IMO they ruin otherwise nice items 9 out of 10 times

Brefugee · 24/02/2023 08:37

i will only buy dresses/skirts these days if they have pockets, they must be really spectacularly fantastic for me to buy them without.

But if you can sew and you're careful, you can put your own pockets in things. Something i seem to have spent a lot of time doing when i lad much less time.

Pinkbananas01 · 24/02/2023 08:39

I always have stuff in my pockets. White stuff dresses are great for day dresses most have pockets

squashyhat · 24/02/2023 08:42

I'm not going to shove a tissue up my sleeve or under my bra strap. There must me another convenient location. Oh....wait...

BarbaraofSeville · 24/02/2023 08:42

It's particularly annoying that the only pockets that seem to regularly feature on women's clothing is that tiny pointless pocket you get on some t-shirts. It looks shit and serves no purpose whatsoever as far as I can see.

I once saw a male colleague take the piss out of a female colleague when she retrieved her phone from her bra. I said to him 'where would you put the phone if you didn't have any pockets' (we're all on call so take it in turns to have 'the phone' on our person 24/7) and after a moment's thought, saw the problem. Conversation carried on about why many women always need to have their handbags within reach. We can't just put our phones, money, tampons, tissues etc in our pockets because they usually don't exist and when they do, they're too small and useless for most things.
