Why do people go on about pockets in dresses?

I don’t get the love for this. You don’t out things in the pockets and you don’t stand / walk about with your hands in them so why do people love them?! Please enlighten me!

I think a properly constructed item of clothing can take pockets quite easily. I remember my mum making my clothes as a kid (70s/80s) from quality materials and always adding at least one pocket (for snails, pebbles and other treasures).

My daughter is the same. She gets very annoyed if she discovers a fake pocket, or insufficient jeans pocket. We are of the same opinion, sometimes we don't want to take a bag. Sometimes, we just want to take our Oyster card, debit card, keys and phone out with us. So sometimes we have to pay a bit more for a clothing item to fulfill the brief.

Pockets are absolutely a feminist issue. My husband is never lacking deep pockets. He's never had a pocket problem. (He does get holes in his pockets though). Whereas DD and I always have to check first.

As much as I like pockets in a dress, I'm not persuaded by the pockets can replace a bag argument. I've got a range of cross body pocket bags from Radley, including one which is small enough just for keys, phone and credit cards. They feel much more secure than putting things into a pocket and are very handy.

You have made me want a house coat. Where did you get yours?

My daughter bought it for me when she was away for work in Queensland, (Australia). Unfortunately, I cut the name tag out of the neck because tags irritate me, so I cant help you with that . But I’ve bookmarked your post and will get back to you if my daughter can remember where she bought it.

Pockets are important

There's a poem by Sharon Owens about women's pockets.

The only thing I ever really put in the pocket of any item of clothing that's not a coat is my phone, and that's only when I'm at hom, when I would usually be wearing jeans and definitely not a dress. If I'm at work I don't carry my phone on me, and if I'm out and about I always have a bag. I don't aesthetically dislike pockets, and I think there should be more women's clothes with them as there's clearly a demand, but I don't need them!

DuchessOfSausage · 25/02/2023 08:49

We have a front door that can slam shut if you're not careful, so I always have the house key on me at home.
My neighbour locked himself out, but I was in, and he came in through our house, and borrowed a ladder then climbed in through their back bedroom window.

mumda · 25/02/2023 08:54

I recently bought some new trousers. They have no pockets. So currently I either wear a fleece

mumda · 25/02/2023 08:55

Or have to carry things around. More pockets wanted.

Blinking phone just went funny so my fingers hit post too soon. I think it's a bouncing advert again.

princesssparklepants · 25/02/2023 09:00

My dd is 7 but when she was a toddler she used to love it when something had pockets!
"It's got pockets mummy"

I love not having to carry a bag, so pockets are great. Currently use coat pockets but in warmer weather have to use a bag as most summer stuff doesn't have pockets!!!

TheDead · 25/02/2023 09:30

In theory I like a pocket but I apart from coat pockets I never actually use them other than occasionally putting my hands in.

I also don't agree that men can use their pockets & still look OK. There's nothing attractive about a man who has stuffed his pockets full of stuff & ruined the lines of the suit he's wearing. It gives a very dishevelled look overall.

And worse still was the fashion for parsnip shaped men in spray on skinny jeans with their pockets stuffed with wallets, keys, phones, vapes, cigarettes etc. It made them look like they were wearing a nappy under the jeans. Not exactly the look they were going for!

I use bags & my husband has 2 'man-bags'. One that takes his laptop & one messenger bag style. Both italian leather.
They work better than pockets..

SoupDragon · 25/02/2023 09:40

I put phone and keys in pockets. Or I do if they're not those stupid "Girly" pockets that only fit a tissue. I hate having to use a bag when I don't have pockets (summer for example)

DD was delighted that her prom dress had pockets 😂

LadyOfTheCanyon · 25/02/2023 10:24

" It's got pockets, Mummy!" has really made me smile.

Pigtailsandall · 25/02/2023 10:41

I no longer buy anything without pockets. I wouldn't leave my phone on my desk at work, and when I roam around the house I want my phone on me too. Plus I stuff my pockets with stuff that needs to go from upstairs to downstairs and vice versa.

I went to a gig recently with only my phone and keys in my coat pocket. So fantastic. When its summer, I want to do the same without a jacket

Triffid1 · 25/02/2023 10:52

I am currently wearing a slouchy cardigan style jumper that, when I tried it on I found myself exclaiming, "ooh, soft. Oh WOW, POCKETS!" At that point, how it looked became almost irrelevant!!!

Largely because they’re dull

DuchessOfSausage · 25/02/2023 11:22

Because we're dull
Because we can't manage our drippy noses
Because we're too lazy to carry a bag
Because we're too miserly to enjoy paying £145 or thereabouts for a dress with no sleeves, collar, or pockets
Because we're so entitled we think that we deserve them
Because we think men don't have to put up with pocketless clothes
Because we never want to only carry keys and wallet
Because we never need to carry a tampon
...

What's dull about not wanting to faff about with a bag for keys/phone?

Theos · 25/02/2023 11:49

Clothes with pockets often look frumpy

Fizzadora · 25/02/2023 11:52

My secateurs are in my pockets probably about 90% of my waking hours.

WhiteCatmas · 25/02/2023 12:00

I got so fed up with the tiny pockets in my jeans that I bought men’s jeans. The pockets are so large I lost my phone in one.
Don’t buy women’s ‘boyfriend’ jeans. Just buy men’s jeans.
I realise this is about dresses, but so what.

MidnightMeltdown · 25/02/2023 12:04

I don't get it either. More often than not, pockets are just annoying as they crease up in the wash

I would never put anything in a dress pocket because a) it would ruin the shape of the dress, and b) I'd be worried about it falling out

nevertakeadvicefromsomeonewhosfallingapart · 25/02/2023 12:14

I love a dress with pockets, just like putting my hands in them.

Agreed. Pockets are handy for a tissue/ reading glasses and phone if I'm not at my desk but not much else.

Agreed about men and pockets.

I usually have stuff in my dress pockets and 100% of the time I put my hands in them.

What kind of weirdo are you?
