Why do people go on about pockets in dresses?

I don’t get the love for this. You don’t out things in the pockets and you don’t stand / walk about with your hands in them so why do people love them?! Please enlighten me!

You may not put things in your pockets, but I can assure you that I do!

TheOGCCL · 24/02/2023 08:43

A hand in a pocket when standing is perfect for slouchy insouciance, but they are also eminently practical.

You can put things in the pockets.

You can put your hands in them.

That's why I like them, anyway.

Missingthegore · 24/02/2023 08:46

I round on my wards every day
2 phones and a paper notebook
I can put the phones in my pockets and not leave them places when I stop to write things in my notebook ( notes for things the nurses ask me to follow up on, problems I see e.g. ward 6 power outage in the tea room again)

I wear A line dresses as I am an hourglass shape so it doesn't ruin the line of the dress

Also if I have to carry the pager it is a good to clip it on a pocket than on my shoulder.

they can be functional, but I don’t like the way they look. They add bulk (on my hips where I don’t want it), they rarely have the proper structure to support a heavy item like a phone in the way jeans do, and they typically aren’t secure. IMO they ruin otherwise nice items 9 out of 10 times

I agree with this. Pockets in dresses are not fit for purpose, too flimsy and saggy (unless it's a denim dress), and honestly, why do some people walk around with their hands in their pockets? I find this quite strange.

I love it when people say 'you' when actually they mean 'I'.

Totally

I like somewhere to put my phone, bankcard and key so i dont have to carry a bag. But only certain types of pocket and cut of dress work for that. The pockets ideally need a zip.

Brefugee · 24/02/2023 08:48

We can't just put our phones, money, tampons, tissues etc in our pockets because they usually don't exist and when they do, they're too small and useless for most things.

have had the same discussion with male colleagues. And then when we went out for lunch he had the nerve to ask me to put his phone/wallet in my bag because they made his trousers bulge. I declined.

My wedding dress has pockets…

It's particularly annoying that the only pockets that seem to regularly feature on women's clothing is that tiny pointless pocket you get on some t-shirts. It looks shit and serves no purpose whatsoever as far as I can see.

I once saw a male colleague take the piss out of a female colleague when she retrieved her phone from her bra. I said to him 'where would you put the phone if you didn't have any pockets' (we're all on call so take it in turns to have 'the phone' on our person 24/7) and after a moment's thought, saw the problem. Conversation carried on about why many women always need to have their handbags within reach. We can't just put our phones, money, tampons, tissues etc in our pockets because they usually don't exist and when they do, they're too small and useless for most things.

My husband accidentally wore my jeans when we went away for the weekend recently (don't worry I'm still teasing him about his cross dressing) and his main complaint was the tiny pockets.

I could have sworn that I do!

But hey, you know best, OP.

You might not, but some of us do.

What ridiculous post!

You don’t out things in the pockets

Yes, I do.

and you don’t stand / walk about with your hands in them

Yes, I do.

Starryskiesinthesky · 24/02/2023 08:58

Haha didn’t expect to get the dress pocket love! I am office based so either have a big bag for all my crap or just hold my phone. I also was thinking more of dresses you wear out and a phone or other stuff would look odd / drag it down.

I also usually have a coat on with pockets if I need them.

my new research is now going to be looking at folk and seeing if they have stuff in their pockets!

I like having pockets at work. I don't walk around with my handbag and I don't want to leave my phone on my desk.

And me!

bussteward · 24/02/2023 08:59

I do stand/walk about with my hands in my pockets! Imo the worst part of having children is having to hold their hands when I’d rather have my hands in my pockets.

I also keep tissues in one pocket, lip balm in another.

FindingMeno · 24/02/2023 08:59

I need somewhere to put my fags.

SausagePourHomme · 24/02/2023 08:59

To say people don't put things in pockets, they seem to have really taken off. Men in particular wont go without them

I am in admiration of you OP who has never used a pocket. Brava

NashvilleQueen · 24/02/2023 08:59

Those are the precise reasons I want pockets!

I'm a sod for putting my debit card in my jeans pockets rather than carrying a cumbersome purse around. The number of times it's been "lost" and discovered in the washing basket, washing machine or just randomly abandoned on a coffee table, bedside table or windowsill...

Why do you say people don’t put things in their pockets?? I do all the time. I put on a new dress this morning and automatically went to put my phone in the pocket, but alas, no pocket. School run doesn’t require a bag.

hryllilegur · 24/02/2023 08:29

I put things in pockets. I am always dismayed when I don’t have any because I’ve nowhere to put my keys.

I don’t own a handbag. So I use my pockets like men do.

This. I don't have a bag. I only ever take my keys and phone with me.

Floisme · 24/02/2023 09:01

I don't care too much about dress / skirt pockets as they're mostly too flimsy to be any use for anything but hands. What I do feel strongly about are jacket inside pockets (sewn into the lining). Men's tailored jackets typically have about 3.
