Why do people go on about pockets in dresses?

I don’t get the love for this. You don’t out things in the pockets and you don’t stand / walk about with your hands in them so why do people love them?! Please enlighten me!

Trouser / Jean pockets are sturdier though.

Love pockets!
mainly for my phone. For going out I’d put my card or phone in so I can go to the bar. (I’ve deliberately got a “mini” iPhone).
Can’t stand “clutch” bags which basically mean holding your stuff in your hand. Cross-body bags don’t work for me due to chest size.

Indeed.

But I don't always want to wear trousers. When I wear a dress I appreciate a pocket for all the reasons you've mention above, including just standing around with my hand in my pocket. It's a favoured pose of mine.

WaddleAway · 24/02/2023 09:03

OP had it genuinely not occurred to you that the reason some women like pockets in their dresses is because they want to put things in their pockets?

OntarioBagnet · 24/02/2023 09:03

I put stuff in dress pockets all the time. Phone, pen, work ID. Maybe my keys. Chewing gum

YesItsMeIDontCare · 24/02/2023 09:04

Popsy, Joanie and Run & Fly do dresses with fairly decent pockets. I know they won't be to everyone's taste but I love them 😁

LilylilyDaisy · 24/02/2023 09:07

This annoys me too.

Many the dress or skirt line has been ruined because of the inclusion of stupid pockets. Some designs really don't suit them but it's like POCKETS are essential. They aren't. I sew them up then cut them out and use a cross body bag. I have a big bunch of keys and a big phone just for starters so I can't see how useful some small little pockets are going to be. It's just a marketing tool, whether or not they are really fit for purpose.

They are often too shallow to put anything useful in. With jeans pockets, a phone will fit snugly in the back pocket and perhaps keys and a card in the front, and pocket items stay in place securely because the fit of jeans keeps them bound tightly to the body. With skirts and dresses, the pockets would have to be pretty deep to be secure enough to counter the fact they are flowing loose (and are at more risk of losing items from).

Even my 3 year old, when she gets a new dress, will ask "does it have pockets?" Pockets are useful and fun and all men's clothes have them so why not?

ShimmeringShirts · 24/02/2023 09:07

Where can I find a dress with pockets?? I’ve stopped wearing dresses because they DONT have them, it’s always done my head in. I need my pockets to put my hands and items in!

Fleur405 · 24/02/2023 09:08

I love a dress with pockets - somewhere to put tissues/bobbles/phone/office swipe card thingy

TheFairyCaravan · 24/02/2023 09:08

I like pockets because I can’t walk unaided. Owing to the fact that I’m in fact not an octopus, I can’t use my crutches and carry something at the same time.

EasterlyDirection · 24/02/2023 09:08

Same here re work, I like to keep my phone on me but it would be ridiculous carrying a handbag round the building all day and I need my hands free for other things. I do sometimes use my bra but as phones have got bigger and bulkier that looks far more mis-shapen than a well cut pocket, is awkward if you have a high necked top or dress on and invites sleazy men to offer to help you find it if it rings Angry.

I also like it on me around the house and garden and not have to hold it or sit it down in random. Going out without a bag and just phone and key in a pocket is liberating too, I hate carrying bags.

hryllilegur · 24/02/2023 09:08

Dress/shirt pockets can he properly constructed to be sturdier. They don’t have to be pathetic, shallow imitations.

I don’t want to have to carry a bag. I’m likely to forget/lose it. And, almost inevitably, I end up being the pack horse because I can just put X in my bag for people.

no thanks. Pockets for my phone and keys and I’m totally fine. If it’s good enough for men; I don’t need to be carrying around tonnes of extra shit either.

Deadringer · 24/02/2023 09:09

I hate carrying a handbag, i always end up wearing a jacket everywhere whatever the weather so I have a pocket for my phone and keys. Decent pockets in my clothes would be very useful imo.

Popsy, Joanie and Run & Fly. There's also a website which has links to dresses with pockets from other retailers who might only have one or two.

handsoffate · 24/02/2023 09:11

I’ve git several denim and cord pinafore dresses with deep pockets. You can slouch around with your hands in them and carry loads of stuff at the same time.

redskydelight · 24/02/2023 09:12

Women have got used to not putting things in pockets because so many women's clothes do not have pockets or have tiny non-functional pockets. Hence the explosion of the handbag industry.
Some women have also been indoctrinated into believing putting your stuff in a bag is better than having pockets (see some responses on this thread) which proves that marketing is working.

Men, have always had decent pockets, so are used to putting things in them and tend not to carry bags because they don't need to. Imagine what would happen if clothes manufacturers decided they weren't going to do this any more?

My wedding dress had pockets and it was extremely handy on the day, especially with a one year old.

Whydoitry · 24/02/2023 09:17

I asked a similar question about this once after hearing so many people going on about wedding dresses with pockets.

Personally I never use dress pockets as heavy things like a phone make it hang funny and lobsided.

The only pockets I use are in coats or jeans. I don't find it an issue as 99% of the time I have a coat, jeans, a bag or a buggy to put stuff.

OtterAnimagus · 24/02/2023 09:17

Yes like a pocket in a dress it is useful for tissues and maybe a phone at a push. Had an interesting conversation with a work colleague explaining why I needed a specific work bag. It's a cross-body small bag for days when I am duty manager as have to carry 2 phones, a radio and lock off padlock as a bare minimum. In winter it's fine as coat pockets are sufficient but sadly very few women's clothes for summer can hold all of it.

I do both of those

If people didnt want them, they wouldn't go on about it

LadyOfTheCanyon · 24/02/2023 09:19

Pockets everywhere are useful. But as the voice of practicality I would advise people not to walk with their hands in their pockets because if you trip you're fucked.

Ask my front teeth how I know. Confused

But men also don't need to carry tampons or make-up or flat shoes to change out of heels...- fewer things to need a bag for?

Women do many things where they don't need to carry these things either.
(actually I don't wear makeup and I've never carried flat shoes to change out of heels - these are also things that marketing has convinced women they "need")

Plenty of occasions where you just need your phone and keys.
