Why do people go on about pockets in dresses?

I don’t get the love for this. You don’t out things in the pockets and you don’t stand / walk about with your hands in them so why do people love them?! Please enlighten me!

AxParis and Next do dresses with pockets as well.

It really makes me chuckle when people make these really confident but completely erroneous statements along the lines of “I don’t put anything in pockets, therefore no-one else must do either.” Not getting at you OP, most people I work with do this too.

LesLavandes · 24/02/2023 09:24

I hate pockets. They lead to bigger looking hips imo

thesugarbumfairy · 24/02/2023 09:27

"You don’t out things in the pockets"
I do put things in my pockets. I put my keys, my phone and my purse in my pockets.

"and you don’t stand / walk about with your hands in them "
Um. Yes, I do stand and walk about with my hands in my pockets. If they aren't full already.

I am generally confused by your confusion!

Legomania · 24/02/2023 09:30

Agree that dress pockets are mostly a bit pointless unless you're after the lumpy look.

Decent jacket pockets on the other hand...

NotAnotherBathBomb · 24/02/2023 09:31

😂

I put my phone in my pocket

It's even more useful in summer when I ditch the coat because I can put my keys in the other pocket.

My problem is that so many dresses have weak pockets, like ones stitched on at the front, so my phone falls out by slightly bending

Oh the drama of a bigger hip!

WaddleAway · 24/02/2023 09:35

😂 I don’t care if having stuff in my pocket makes my hips look ‘big’. It’s usually pretty clear that it’s not ‘hip’, it’s just stuff in my pocket. I have a disabled child and therefore usually need both hands free to deal with him, so I’m definitely not spending my day thinking ‘oh dear, I hope my hips don’t look too big with this stuff in my pocket’.

Bagofweasels · 24/02/2023 09:36

I don’t get it, it drives me batty, so many dresses have pockets these days, ruining an otherwise lovely dress. I actively avoid them, or if I really love the dress I stitch them up and cut them off. Like you say are people stuffing their pockets with things?? Surely that’s what bags are for and my hips are wide enough without bloody pockets sticking out. I accept I’m in the minority here but I only ever wear dresses and it winds me up

Aposterhasnoname · 24/02/2023 09:39

Well I want them to put stuff in and put my hands in.

Examples of stuff that go in my pockets and don’t alter the shape of the dress:

Tampons, tissues, tickets, small change or bank notes, work pass, locker key, trolley token, glasses, mints, grandsons small plastic dinosaur that he insists on taking everywhere then wants me to carry……

pinkpigletjoe · 24/02/2023 09:41

I'd only put a tissue or lip gloss in a dress pocket, as keys or a phone would pull that side of the dress down.

I think it's a comfort thing in some situations. Like self soothing lol.

Sunnydays0101 · 24/02/2023 09:45

I’m with you OP, I never put anything in the pockets of jeans/trousers/skirts/dresses, etc. I think anything, except maybe a tissue, ruins the line if the item, risk falling out or tearing the fabric.

I don’t tend to carry my phone around with me indoors, it’s in my handbag when I’m out. Only exception is if I’m walking, my phone would be in the pocket of my coat or jacket.

I am assuming they don’t all go in at once?

the other day I had a dress with pockets, and went out with just my phone, car key and phone. It was bliss to have no bag.

In addition I have autism and really need deep pockets to put my hands into. Its a sensory/security thing. They are a big decider on if I can wear something in public.

NettleTea · 24/02/2023 09:48

Toast is great for their pockets. good deep ones. well cut so things dont make you look lumpy.

DrFoxtrot · 24/02/2023 09:50

I feel the same OP, that dress pockets often don't feel good enough not to lose things. And I'm not a big pocket user - maybe my jeans back pocket for phone if I want it with me but need my hands.

It makes washing easier if I know there's nothing in the pockets to check - no random tissues or chewing gum Grin.

picklemewalnuts · 24/02/2023 09:55

Because it saves me stashing stuff in my bra.

CatMattress · 24/02/2023 09:56

I have a lovely Hobbs fitted wool dress with great, deep pockets. Big enough to shove my personal phone, work phone and lip balm in on the way to the loo and not only are they secure but they don't ruin the line of the dress. Brilliant.

I also have several Boden dresses with pockets. They're useful. It makes me happy.

FoxFeatures · 24/02/2023 09:57

Pockets are brilliant.

That sounds like a good name for a woman's clothing co.

Wanders off planning a new business.....

Phone and keys

HippyChickMama · 24/02/2023 10:04

I've just bought a new dress for work and I was over the moon to discover, when it arrived, that it has pockets. I do usually carry a bag for work but if I'm just going to get a coffee from the shop downstairs, I usually only need to take my phone to pay and not my whole bag. Also, I use a PowerPoint remote during teaching and it's good to have somewhere to put it when I'm not using it, as I tend to pace about, so don't want to have to go back to the lectern for it every time

Zodfa · 24/02/2023 10:14

Large pockets like you get in jackets are so helpful but I never much like or trust trouser pockets myself. I might slip something in there when I'm inside but don't keep anything there when walking around.

MotherofBingo · 24/02/2023 10:14

I use pockets because most bags are ridiculously uncomfortable apart from backpacks but even backpacks annoy me so I prefer pockets. A lot of women obviously do use handbags regularly though - just because I can't stand them doesn't mean I'd say I don't see the point of them.

I also put my hands in my pockets because I don't know what to do with them half the time. As for how it looks, I've tried many times to not look like a rotting potato but everything from hair on my face, multiple layers of clothing and shoes feeling weird irritate me so I've accepted that I'll always just look a bit strange now anyway 😅

MotherofBingo · 24/02/2023 10:16

Dress pockets are generally much more functional that trouser pockets as well! Some of my dresses have better pockets than my coat does.

hryllilegur · 24/02/2023 10:17

you don’t hear men complaining that pockets and using them make their clothes hang poorly. Nor do you hear that complaining that they are unflattering on their hips etc.

that’s because men’s clothes are constructed better than women’s clothes are. They’re just higher quality in general. Better materials. More robust construction. Everything. It’s ridiculous.

and also there is none of the cultural baggage about bulky hips etc. there are men walking around all over the place not caring that their phone is bulky at their hips etc

And there’s no expectation that men will wear shoes that are impractical and uncomfortable so they need to bring two pairs or similar. Can you imagine men doing that?

Jumbojade · 24/02/2023 10:17

My dd’s Wedding dress had pockets, seems that quite a lot of them do now.
