Those old make up brands that have gone- a bit of fun for the oldies.

I was thinking today how many old brands have gone.

I remember buying my first 'real' foundation in a dept store when I was about 15. The store was the House of Fraser group. I bought Yardley foundation and my Mum came along with me to look at the shades. It was in a turquoise tube, not unlike the packaging now of some Clinique products.

The others I used were
Outdoor Girl
Miners
Mary Quant ( a real treat as it was expensive.)

Me and my friends used to spend ages on Saturdays in Woolies looking at Outdoor Girl and Miners.

I used to love a tiny pot of Miners lip gloss.

Beauty Without Cruelty?

My mum worked in a small pharmacy when I was small (80s) and I remember it there. Never seen it since.

What was the lip gloss in a glass bottle with a roller ball?

Oh yes

Tamarindtree · 31/01/2023 14:03

I think it was Almay circa early eighties that had loose face powder in a sparkling or a matte finish in Barbapapa coloured pots.

Absolutely beautiful face powder.

@NanaWelshcake

Many moons ago, I used to work for M&S, so your anecdote about your grandmother has charmed my socks off.

I loved it too. The 1980s stuff really reminds me of Christmas shopping with my mum. Especially the Edwardian Lady stuff.

Revlon Flex is still around, I'm in SA though.

The red toothpaste, could that have been Close Up which we still get too.

Along with the original red Lifebuoy soap.

At one point everything was apple flavoured, the best smelling apple shampoo was Colgate , everyone used it back in the day, no matter who you visited, you would see the green bottle with white lid somewhere in the bathroom. Then there was Timotei and the beer shampoo Body on Tap.

Conditioner wasn't a thing, I can't remember when we started using it but I must have been into my 20s at least. It probably was around earlier, but it wasn't a necessity like it is now. And everyone's hair always seemed so shiny with no help back. And smelling of apple.

Then it was strawberry everything, and that one seemed to have last longer, as the first time I walked into a Body Shop on holiday when in UK, most things seemed to be strawberry scented.

Those roller balls lip gloss were just awful yet we thought we look amazing, if you applied too much it dripped in the corner of your mouth. That was strawberry flavoured as well.

As a young child I had Tinkerbell nail varnish and lipstick, in a set with a little mirror. Did you used to get this ?

I think it was the cold water rinses 🥶 at the end, after the hair had been washed, then hair was drip dried, no hairdryers used. Though we had one in case needed for emergencies or occasions.

I was a teenager when I started using conditioner.

@isthismylifenow was the Tinkerbell stuff from Avon? I first bought conditioner when I was about 18 or 19. So a good 26 years ago! I don't actually own a hairdryer and I let my hair drip dry. It's in pretty good condition, I'm useless with my hair but it dries nice and wavy and that's what I like.

MistyRock · 12/02/2023 09:28

The red toothpaste is Close up. It's an Asian brand (I presume as I've always bought in S E Asia and Central Asia).

I am sure it wasn't an Avon product as they weren't in SA in those day afaik.

I'll attach a picture, there were a few different sets you could get, some had a perfume in, a 4711 type lemon cologne.

Yes we always did a cold rinse of our hair, but growing up in a hot country I always used to think it was the chlorine that made it shine as we swam a lot. I didn't own a hairdryer as a child/teenager. If anyone needed to dry their hair, we used Mums. Which was rare.

Heres a pic of Tinkerbell

Mary Quant Daisy perfume, I thought I was so sophisticated

I did check as I wasn't sure, and I see it's a Unilever product. And I did think they were a global company, so it is odd how some things are only available in some countries.

Saying that, they supply Dove products as well, and from what I have seen, UK has a much wider buying choice of Dove than we do.

The best one is the hot spicy one imo 😀

Did someone say Arabian Glow?

Look what still lurks in my makeup graveyard of things I can’t bear to throw away 🤣

Revised: the Mary Quant perfume was called Havoc not Daisy

justasking111 · 12/02/2023 12:16

Nars did an eyeliner in a bottle. You had a tiny brush to dip in it. Came in lots of colours. Can't even find it on Google now.

I think I've still got a bronzer relic somewhere

justasking111 · 12/02/2023 12:26

Found my grave yard item could be 30 years old

Jins · 12/02/2023 12:28

I have to confess that my arabian glow went out of use fairly recently (ie 10 years or so ago) as it was my go to blusher in the days before contouring.

It smells ok, it’s only pressed powder. Safe to use? 🤣🤣🤣

Jins · 12/02/2023 12:31

That takes me back @justasking111. Not one I had but I’m sure a friend did.

somewhere I should have some black eyeshadow palettes that I used with a wet paintbrush to do a siouxsie and the banshees eyeliner. I’ll have a rummage later

kateandme · 12/02/2023 18:29

And wella shampoo because it sponsored friends!
Body shop strawberry lip gloss
And those really stick pots of lip gloss from...they had like a swirl effect in them.screw on lid?
