Those old make up brands that have gone- a bit of fun for the oldies.

I was thinking today how many old brands have gone.

I remember buying my first 'real' foundation in a dept store when I was about 15. The store was the House of Fraser group. I bought Yardley foundation and my Mum came along with me to look at the shades. It was in a turquoise tube, not unlike the packaging now of some Clinique products.

The others I used were
Outdoor Girl
Miners
Mary Quant ( a real treat as it was expensive.)

Me and my friends used to spend ages on Saturdays in Woolies looking at Outdoor Girl and Miners.

I used to love a tiny pot of Miners lip gloss.

Does anyone remember Aqua Manda Orange scented bath oil?

I’m so happy you mentioned Aqua Manda.

Then there was also a perfume called Midnight.

This was 50 years ago now when I was about 15.

NanaWelshcake · 22/01/2023 17:01

and Pretty Peach, the children's range from Avon

I loved it and still think of it and how happy it made me.

Niftythrifter · 22/01/2023 18:10

What about the trend for a no make up make up look. The Body Shop Beech 3 in 1 was recommended in pursuit of this look as I remember. It made me look corpse like.

Not a make-up but just gone down a rabbit hole of eyebrows .
It says that the 80s shape was full (like Brooke Shields) but I was a teenager through the 80s and the thing was definatly to get your tweezers out !

Never tweeze above the brow , have the highest bit above your pupil and you measured the length by holdng a pencil beside your nose to the inner eye corner , then from your nose through the outer eye corner .

Shapes were angular or 'tadpole' .
My brows have never forgiven my tweezer happiness and though they were good in my 20s , now they are scrawny !

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/01/2023 18:46

BS was the only person alive to have bushy eyebrows back then and we all thought the poor soul really weird!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/01/2023 18:47

Flex shampoo was yellow, wasn't it,am I remembering correctly?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/01/2023 18:57

I'm going back a bit but what about Bisto on yer legs and an eye pencil for the seam.

Had to keep away from dogs or else they'd kick it all orf, don't you know!

Niftythrifter · 22/01/2023 19:00

@Comefromaway I had that perfume ( night version) given to me with the matching body lotion and bag. It was by Max Factor! That brings back memories of the Christmas I got it when I wore my new pj set with a black and white stripe top and black bottoms! Still love stripes to this day!

As for the block mascara, 17 bought out a version too ( when it was blue packaging). The 17 slogan at the time I think was “ It’s not makeup, it’s ammunition”.

😂😂😂

No dont remember that. BUT we all used clear nail varnish for a run in our tights. Someone always had a bottle in their school bag. The desks and chairs were lethal.

The colour and denier of tights back then were grim. American tan. Suited no-one but were warm under knee length school socks in the winter. They weren't cheap either

Just look at the colour 🙈

No one will have noticed, we were all patchy and wearing the wrong shade!

That was what I suspected too. Luckily all my photos are quite blurry!

What about the range exclusive to Superdrug that had foundation in bottles like Mac and Boots used to have Une by Bourjois which O think was more natural.

That was called GOSH I believe

I recall women in my family speaking about doing this during the war and into the 50’s.

My granny worked in Marks and Spencer’s in the late 1920’s before she was married. The assistants were ‘allowed’ to wear an outfit from stock and model it for a week before being able to buy it at a greatly reduced price on the Friday afternoon.

Niftythrifter · 23/01/2023 07:31

@VanillaImpulse I think the range was called Kolor.

GOSH is still going I think or it was until very recently.

CPL593H · 23/01/2023 10:59

I still miss Barbara Daly Face Lift, sold in Tesco. Little pot that sort of acted like a BB cream but so much better IMO.

Deathraystare · 24/01/2023 16:35

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

You are so right! I really don't remember anything about blending. Certainly not using tools either although I did use a brush with my Mary Quant natural shadower (a contour) and was rather impressed with my obviously brown stripes! A bit pointless when the rest of my is a blimp!!!

DorisParchment · 24/01/2023 20:27

@Brefugee you used to be able to buy Eau Jeune in French and Belgian supermarkets until relatively recently - I don’t know if you still can.

Brefugee · 24/01/2023 20:28

oh i don't live far from Belgium - i might hop over and have a look. Thanks

I loved Ultima II Brighten Up, Tighten Up eye cream. Was Ultima a Revlon brand?
Also Prescriptives face make up was really light and sheer. Lovely to use.

PAFMO · 31/01/2023 07:16

Yes, it was. And it failed because it was the Bobbi Brown nudes look of its day, but sadly that day was the 1980s when nudes was definitely not a thing!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 16/01/2023 22:59

OMG - I just realised I have some of the nail polish from this range!

Rebel2023 · 31/01/2023 08:44

And when I say have it, I mean still using it
