Those old make up brands that have gone- a bit of fun for the oldies.

I was thinking today how many old brands have gone.

I remember buying my first 'real' foundation in a dept store when I was about 15. The store was the House of Fraser group. I bought Yardley foundation and my Mum came along with me to look at the shades. It was in a turquoise tube, not unlike the packaging now of some Clinique products.

The others I used were
Outdoor Girl
Miners
Mary Quant ( a real treat as it was expensive.)

Me and my friends used to spend ages on Saturdays in Woolies looking at Outdoor Girl and Miners.

I used to love a tiny pot of Miners lip gloss.

Was it not Country Born?

It was separate from that but you reminded me of Country Born, I'd forgotten about that one!

Niftythrifter · 23/10/2025 16:45

Aveda
Sensique
Outdoor Girl
RU ( Rimmel range exclusive to Superdrug)
Bourjois has a range of phone charm minis as well as mini eyeshadows
Bpurjois also had another range that was more about clean makeup or something similar.

Kiss makeup

Niftythrifter · 23/10/2025 16:46

Kolor at Superdrug
Miss Sporty

Defiantly41 · 24/10/2025 01:03

I remember so many of these. Jardins du Bagatelle perfume? Still mourning the loss of Ultima 11 Skinscent. And Organza? And Helena Rubinstein Apple Blossom

i think the mail order company mentioned way up thread was Yves Rocher, very sophisticated at the time

I was a teenager in the 60s and our favourite lipstick was The Palest by Miners. This was the era of dark eye-make up and very pale lips as demonstrated by a new, waif-like model called Twiggy. The Palest completely obliterated your lips and we must have all looked like the living dead 😂🧟‍♂️ I remember one of the best presents I got was a Mary Quant Paintbox. It contained a variety of eyeshadow colours and lipsticks.

BankfieldForever · 24/10/2025 02:28

My first lipstick was Mary Quant, it was tiny, black with a little flower on top and a push up slider thing and it was a whitish pink called ‘Baby Shrimp’.

It smelled like a wax candle and went on like glue but I loved it.

I'm going back a bit but what about Bisto on yer legs and an eye pencil for the seam.

Had to keep away from dogs or else they'd kick it all orf, don't you know!

My mum was a teenager in the war and she said this was extremely uncommon. The eye pencil maybe, but not often. They wore ankle socks a lot and cotton and wool stockings were available and worn, especially by mature women. Trousers were worn more than we’re told about.

Silk stockings were available to those who could afford them, coupons allowing.

And the dogs thing is a myth that probably came from later newspaper cartoons. Gravy browning was a flavourless caramel used to give colour to meat juices and flour and did not smell of meat, so would not attract dogs.

Oh yes!

Outdoor Girl and Miners!

Everything was ‘frosted’.

I had some Mary Quant nail varnish, I was so proud of it. And Biba, too.

Mid 90s I pestered my mum for a purple eyeshadow duo from the Avom catalogue, had Boots 17 frosted lipstick and a black lipstick from miss selfridge. The Miss Selfridge make up was so colourful and I also had a purple Hard Candy nail varnish I loved.

Keepthecat · 24/10/2025 06:48

Innoxa. I remember going to the Innoxa counter in Boots to get a different shade of foundation and the girl said to me: "That colour you're wearing does nothing for you at all." I wasn't wearing ANY makeup.
I also remember Leichner, who did stage makeup, also did some street makeup.
I had a Coty lipstick too.

Must have been just me then!

(Dogs still lick my legs thought - I don't know why)

I know urban decay still going but nothing like their early days.. I remember the little face cases they did c. 2000, it was a tiny palette with 4 eyeshadow 2 lip gloss and a cheek thing. Shades with names like asphyxia. I had about 3. Best thing was getting them out to touch up in public.

I had the little UD mini palette. It was amazing and I remember it being really expensive. I didn't use it much but I loved it.

I remember all my make up came from the Avon lady as a teenager (sparkly gold eyeshadow, sky blue eye liner and horrible shiny pastel pink lipstick all of which clashed with my acne!!LOL).
Cant believe Avon are still going.....and that Im still wearing sparkly eye shadow!😁

GellerYeller · 24/10/2025 23:03

Hard Candy nail polishes- didn’t they come with a little plastic ring on the bottle top that you could wear?
I also remember lipsticks that were operated with a push up slider- Rimmel and Lipsyl! Lipsyl was a bit waxy but I had a lovely spearmint own brand one from Boots. Rimmel did a really nice pinky gold that was a bit soapy smelling. I wish I remembered the shade name!

pinkhousesarebest · 24/10/2025 23:27

Loving this thread. Does anyone remember à Lancôme body spray - green, very citrusy. I wore it on my wedding day in 1999 and I can still smell it. In a talk glass bottle?

I remember these. I am sure one of the shades in mine was called something like gash. I remember the lipstick too was a silver case ( not polished) and gold on the base.

Sounds about right. 😂

I was obsessed with Max Factor Transparent Burgundy lipstick. I was inconsolable when they stopped making it and I bought three. Recently bought one on ebay, I remember it smelling amazing but think this one had gone off now as it wasn't as nice!

Also loved the bottle the peach stuff from Avon came in, the lid was a peach. Also Miners sachets of hair dye, they only lasted a couple of washes, I used the reddish one all the time as my mum wouldn't let me get my hair dyed.

My grandma used to use a beer shampoo that came in a bottle shaped like a beer keg. I hated the smell of it.

My favourite perfume was a lemon one from Boots.

ozarina · 25/10/2025 03:43

Miners turquoise box block mascara that you used to spit in .

justasking111 · 25/10/2025 09:24

Aqua Manda that you put into the bath water. Adored the smell.

justasking111 · 25/10/2025 09:25

Max Factor panstick that you worked in with a little piece of real sponge.

Gash was a reddish colour I think? I had a purple nail polish of theirs called ‘Bruise’!

Really dark green Biba eye shadow that my dad wouldn’t let me out of the house in.
Mary Quant box, Miners.
Julie Driscoll eye lashes drawn under your eyes!
