I am hoping some other people say "oh once a week" but gloomily prepared for EVERYONE to say daily

it seems such a waste of time

I have very straight hair and asked Santa for a pair of GHDs this year. It's not madness Franny - I use them to curl my hair

FrannyandZooey · 20/01/2008 22:00

oh I use them too winestein

when I can be arsed

Ok [deep breath] once a week . Days one to four wear it down (it's past-shoulders long)5-6 ponytail, the dreaded day 7 scraped back in chignion/messy bun. My hairdresser says it's the best thing for the hair, but tbh for me it's more down to laziness (plus wanting to keep the colour - my roots always seem more obvious after washing, even though I have permanent colour/highlights - one of life's great mysteries )Ok I admit it I'm a scanky bint, but can just about get away with it with long-hair!

FrannyandZooey · 20/01/2008 22:12

yay diege! Respect to you, skanky haired one

Every 3 days - it is naturally dry and curly though! I usually straighten it and if I do a good job of it it lasts 2/3 days (unless raining or v humid). Can go 4 days if I have a ponytail the 4th day. If I don't straighten it though I just tie it back and have to wash it sooner than I would if I'd made more effort, so for me is worth doing

FrayedKnot · 20/01/2008 22:14

Ah. I really don't think I would bother if my hair was straight already.

I have seen that curling with a straightener thing done at the hairdressers (to someone else). It is most odd.

Hmm, anyway, do you think you can convince your sister otehrwise?

Pollyanna · 20/01/2008 22:15

I have to wash mine every day - it's too greasy not too. Sometimes I use some of that dry shampoo instead (not if I'm going out/to work), but feel pretty skanky. It is straight too, so looks really bad greasy.

I would love not to have to wash it every day - it is such a fag.

hunkermunker · 20/01/2008 22:19

I usually wash mine every day, because I like the feel of light, clean hair on my head.

If I miss a day, I'll wear it up, or I fiddle with it and it looks worse.

My problem is that I used to have relatively straight hair, then I got pg with DS2 and my hair went curly and I have no real idea wtf I'm meant to do with it. I've only just worked out you don't brush curly hair with a proper hairbrush ffs. I should shave it all off, really.

(MT, I've just started using kids' shampoo - Horns and Halos stuff from Tesco - no SLEs, no parabens, no sodium laureth sulphate, etc - I get itchy reactions to several shampoos - Herbal Essences is worst - totally organic experience my arse (not that I need to shampoo my arse, you understand).)

Diege · 20/01/2008 22:21

I am really the only skank-head on mumsnet? (and I was doing so well on the 'groomed' thread too - what a traitor I am )

hunkermunker · 20/01/2008 22:22

Also, if I have a shower without washing it, it goes limp and looks shite.

I hate this damp weather though - I always look like someone's bunged 20,000 volts through me, casual like.

missnevermind · 20/01/2008 22:23

We can come out of the closet now Diege has admited once a week!!

Once a week - twice if I am doing something nice, very rare. I have waist length dark hair, most days at least some part of it is tied back.

winestein · 20/01/2008 22:26

Diege - if it's any consolation, I aim for a week without washing it on the same basis you manage it!

MAMAZON · 20/01/2008 22:26

every other day.

would love to leave it to only once a week as it must surely be so much better for your hair, but mine gets so greasy i couldn't leave teh house on the 3rd day for fear of being thought of as a homeless person or soemthing

Diege · 20/01/2008 22:26

Yah, there's 2 of us! Strange MISSNEVERMIND my hair is dark almost waist length too

serenity · 20/01/2008 22:26

Every 2/3 days. I wouldn't wash it any more often because it's such a faff to dry (my hair and hairdryers do not mix, every hairdresser swears blind that they can dry it and it won't frizz, but within 2 hours I'm Mrs Frizzy from Frizztown ) I have to use straightners as it's neither curly nor straight, just crap.

themoon66 · 20/01/2008 22:27

I wash mine every day of course. You wash your face and body every day and your hair is out and about in the same pollution and stuff as your skin, so of course it needs the same level of cleaning.

Would you not wash your armpits daily??? eh??

Twinklemegan · 20/01/2008 22:27

Every other day. It would look better if I did it every day but I can't be arsed. I'm still waiting for my "natural oils" to realise and adjust accordingly.

fishie · 20/01/2008 22:34

every other day. some of that is swimming, others conditioner no shampoo. it is long curly and needs to be disentangled and wet is he only way to do it.

you hunkermunker with your new curly hair; comb it when wet in bath/shower. throw brushes away. is it fine? do not overwhelm with heavy products.

winestein · 20/01/2008 22:36

Themoon - No it doesn't! Unless your hair is prone to blackheads and spots of course...

nappyaddict · 20/01/2008 22:47

every 3-4 days.

nappyaddict · 20/01/2008 22:48

those that wash every 5 days can you wear it down for that long without it looking greasy?

FrannyandZooey · 21/01/2008 11:02

"I wash mine every day of course. You wash your face and body every day and your hair is out and about in the same pollution and stuff as your skin, so of course it needs the same level of cleaning.

Would you not wash your armpits daily??? eh??"

what? Your hair doesn't sweat (well mine doesn't )

"those that wash every 5 days can you wear it down for that long without it looking greasy?"

erm no, not really.

OP posts:
themoon66 · 21/01/2008 12:23

Noo.. i didnt mean my hair sweats LOLOLOl.. but surely a scalp produces the same sort of grease and dead skin as the rest of a body?

I know that if I leave mine more than a day I feel very uncomfortable.

FrannyandZooey · 21/01/2008 12:25

yes, but there's only a couple of mm of your hair touching your head, if you think about it

some of us have LOTS and LOTS of hair, we don't want to wash the whole blinking lot

OP posts:
themoon66 · 21/01/2008 12:30

I know your logic is correct F&Z, but I'm desperately trying to defend my hair washing fanatisism here

In my defence, I AM a slattern in other areas of my life and haven't cleaned my oven for 18 months!
