Umm, can we talk about autumn yet?

Look, if you're the type of person still wearing sandals in October, this might not be the thread for you Grin

But... if you are like me and an autumn-loving, pumpkin-spice drinking, leaf kicker, what's on your list?

I'll start:

Flared jeans (I have some, just looking for the right shoes/boots to wear with)
Trench coat
Tweed blazer
Barrel leg cords in a rusty colour.
Deep berry lipstick

I’m in!

I ordered this jumper last night which is the absolute best - I have the grey and brown from last year, but realise the black is half price:

www.arket.com/en_gbp/women/knitwear/product.alpaca-blend-jumper-black.0900663001.html

it is the perfect over-sized, comforting fit.

Hi Judy, I love that jumper - what kind of things do you wear it with, having embraced baggy jeans I’m realising that baggy jumpers just make me look very… baggy?

sorbetseason · 29/07/2022 11:15

Love this thread. In NI it’s virtually autumn already. Am predicting a slightly dark academia edge to my autumn wardrobe.

I have ready to be worn:
Wide black trousers
gorgeous blue boyfriend jeans that go with everything
tan Frye knee high boots, black Frye riding boots, black long suede boots from someone on the outnet.

various &otherstories and uniqlo knits

four new Sezane tops en route as I have realised Sezane are my most worn tops.

everything else is going to be a case of me unpacking my winter stuff, trying it all on and trying to create some outfits that can be thrown on before hustling kids out of the door. I work for myself so the tendency to live in black exercise leggings and hoodies is strong but must be resisted!

Mercedesbenz2022 · 29/07/2022 11:21

I love autumn and autumn clothes .
whoever mentioned wide leg black wool trousers , that’s a good shout …on my list now

that arket jumper , is it itchy ? Or cosy ? Would I get a large if I’m a 16 ? Very tempted but don’t want to go to hassle of sending it back @Judystilldreamsofhorses

i confess I haven’t started thinking about autumn clothes as I am on holiday beg sept , and I’m still thinking bout shorts and summer dresses

watch out bank balance when I return !

GeneParmesanPrivateEye · 29/07/2022 11:02

@godmum56 SCARVES! I had forgotten about them...
your wardrobe sounds a lovely place...

I go and look at all the things in my wardrobe when summer gets too much

Mysaucepanbroke · 29/07/2022 11:31

I know it’s off topic but I’ve started making autumnal leaf bunting!

Never done it before but I have a new fireplace and I want to decorate it 🦊

LucyLoopyLu · 29/07/2022 11:42

I am trying to buy less as I have a wardrobe full of clothes that are hardly worn since moving to the countryside and WFH.

I do however have a small list:

  • new black tights - I've heard snag are good (I have v short legs so sound appealing)
  • denim shirt dress (I have one I love that is a little small for me so would like a replacement)
  • new black leather handbag
  • DMs or similar
  • some sort of padded jacket with removable hood (slim one not a bug bulky one)
  • running gilet I can also use for hiking

For when I go into the office (few times a month)

  • black or brown leather loafers (I have an awful synthetic pair at the moment that are uncomfortable and make my feet sweat 😓)
  • black or navy smart trousers that go with every top
  • navy blazer
GeneParmesanPrivateEye · 29/07/2022 12:17

@sorbetseason Ooh yes to a bit of Dark Academia!

I've never ordered anything from Sezane, but I love their stuff - what's the returns like?

OP posts:
toucaninjapan · 29/07/2022 12:58

@GeneParmesanPrivateEye @Floisme thank you for the fox sweater love. I also have pumpkin sweater from the same brand and it screams autumn!

@sorbetseason may I ask you what Sezane pieces give dark academia vibe to you cause I totally want that?
I'm a recent Sezane addict and I've bought several silk and cotton items which I am extremely pleased with, but I won't wear them in colder months. I've only got one sweater so far during recent Archives, but it is pink and it has zero dark academia edge to it. Grin

Umm, can we talk about autumn yet?
sorbetseason · 29/07/2022 13:07

They're actually really good!

I have just ventured on to tiktok (bleurgh, for work purposes only honest) and clicked on the sezane channel - delightful videos of staff saying what their fave pieces are in super fast french. I learned that a shirt can be 'hyper feminine mais aussi hyper masculin' which was charming.

I am really trying to edit down my wardrobe as I buy stuff and then want to keep it for ages (borderline hoarding of clothes, but I like them all!) so have been analysing what I do wear the most. Sezane stuff came out on top, also the stories knitwear.

I am knitting myself a really long cowl in flecked aran wool that twists over the head twice apparently. Also wearing a grey j crew tweed jacket that looks a bit officy and needs broken in a bit.

Also bought THESE trews which look much more expensive than they are:

www.marksandspencer.com/cotton-rich-tapered-chinos/p/clp60534660?color=DARKKHAKI

I tend to buy a lot of cream or ivory sezane type ruffly shirts, then buy cream or ivory knit wear - too much cream! so the new sezane tops are all coloured and patterned in gorgeous autumny colours.

sorbetseason · 29/07/2022 13:11

OMG that jumper is DIVINE.

Okay I'm doing a HINT of dark academia, sort of publishing mixed with mum with a hint of boston quads trailed with falling autumnal leaves.

Is what I think in my head.

So I have quite a few of the aforementioned cream blouses with stand up ruffly collars and I'm going to wear them with various knitwears, pleated long dark skirts of various kinds from zara and other places, dark green wool effect etc, and knee high tan boots from frye.

a lot of black or dark trousers of various shapes to work into this too.

If I thought I could rock a brooch I would but it might be a step too far. You know, like one of those gold bar ones with a swallow engraved on it from an antique shop.

I have various tan battered leather handbags etc.

toucaninjapan · 29/07/2022 13:24

@sorbetseason your wardrobe description is very inspirational, dark pleated skirts and green wool sound lovely. I might steal an idea or two!

sorbetseason · 29/07/2022 13:39

Go for it! Although as I was writing it I realised that I must be sure to steer clear of being too Robin Hood themed with all the green and tan leather.

I do want a new fair isle cardigan, an oversized one.

Fashiontatts · 29/07/2022 14:17

Hi all! I love the autumn... boots, knits, layering, loads of cool accessories.... I am all about it!
I reckon I'll be in the rolled up jeans/dr martens camp (cos practicality and comfort) but I do love a good multipurpose dress or two for autumn and big overshirts to layer with everything!
I just treated myself to a new pair of DMs in an "oak" colour last week which are giving me all the autumn vibes already!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/07/2022 15:00

@sorbetseason I wear them with Levi’s 501 jeans (straight leg), half tucked. I also wore them with leggings and Ugg boots for WFH on really cold days. I couldn’t get them to work with balloon/mom type jeans. I’m pretty hippy so I need a neater top half with a loose bottom.

@Mercedesbenz2022 there’s a size guide on the website but I think M might be 14/16. I don’t find them at all itchy but I have very high tolerance levels so YMMV. Returns are easy if you have a Hermes drop point locally - we have one in the Tesco Express here.

Floisme · 29/07/2022 15:06

I really like a brooch, preferably on a men's jacket to mess things up a bit.

sorbetseason · 29/07/2022 15:07

OOH levi 501s interesting!

sorbetseason · 29/07/2022 15:13

Me too and there are so many lush old ones.

If I could I often think I would dress like a posh lady in 1953 - you know, comfy tweed suit, blouse with collar and brooch at neck, twinset. Sensible shoes.

I WISH this look would come back.

sorbetseason · 29/07/2022 15:17

Like the photo half way down this page on the right which is in fact in the 30s not 50s but the principle stands:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitford_family

Floisme · 29/07/2022 15:20

Yes in fact I prefer the 30s take on it cos it was more relaxed - by the 50s it was all getting a bit high grooming for my liking.

I think it did come back very briefly in the early noughties? A Marc Jacobs collection. But unfortunately it got dubbed the 'sexy secretary' look and so no-one with half a brain was interested.

Knitily · 29/07/2022 15:56

I looove getting my autumn clothes out and normally do it in August! But I'm going on a hot weather holiday in September so it'll have to wait a few extra weeks this year.

Normally a dress, tights and boots person and I'm very tempted to get some brown stomping around boots to add to my collection, and these look fun and practical: www.aussieboots.co.uk/blundstone-1918.html?attribute_values%5B269%5D=2791&gclid=Cj0KCQjwio6XBhCMARIsAC0u9aFvfGkULExjLsY6RurOT8RcEkt2BVFSBdbfuXsJoklsbg8UxqMHk2oaAkrxEALw_wcB

Also going to try and make a Peter Pan collar dress using some autumnal fabric I bought in NY many years ago - haven't had the courage to cut into it yet but planning a Halloween engagement party so want something a bit special for that.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/07/2022 16:06

@GeneParmesanPrivateEye Satin skirt will be worn with a black turtle neck, boots and a leather jacket

Or with a t-shirt/jumper and trainers (probably with fishnets just peeping out as it's quite long on me)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/07/2022 16:07

I also like a bit of a 'sexy secretary' look, although without the sexy. I still really like pencil skirts for work, although there never seem to be many around now.

sorbetseason · 29/07/2022 17:00

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie zara always produces some good pencil skirts and also last year a great straight/pencil cross in a wool mix with a box pleat.
