New thread for us all to continue the Toast love ...

New things: Ugh. Although the leather medicine pouch reminds me of my bright orange Nivaldo monk's bag which is currently out awaiting some saddle soap. Alongside the similar era bedouin bag which badly needs some repairs.

I'm living out of boxes but doing my annual clothes sift, wash, air, clean, mend anyway. A trove of early years Toast! Anyone remember the sea-green wool top with silver sequin neckband? The purple and gold silk maxi skirt? A statement piece at the time but I got it years later second-hand so can scruff around in it. The blue velvet devoré skirt? Oh how I coveted the devoré gown! Couldn't justify it, hence the skirt. Velvet trousers, cord trousers, wool trousers, wool-linen trousers, all re-bought on eBay after I wore out the originals.

Trying to remember what my very first purchases were. There was a blue & white fine stripe camisole with wide lace neck trim that became the straps. Around the same time as a sparkle pointelle long-sleeve and their original cotton velvet trousers - low waist, wrapover fastening, wide legs. I think. Maybe 20 years ago. Can anyone else remember what first drew them in?

dudsville · 30/06/2022 21:04

That's a good measure of how much you love something @ScottishMouse . I find when i put something on it i don't get that immediate "yes i love this" about it then it heads back. I still get it wrong, my worst purchase being their far too heavy denim wrap pinafore dress.

I've emailed them now. And have made merry with 2 G&Ts, so I'm off to bed. Good night all!

Countmeout · 30/06/2022 21:09

I asked fairly quickly @dudsville . Worth a try.

Stravaig · 30/06/2022 21:19

@ScottishMouse At first glance the black check seems longer and slimmer than the others, and the blue gingham has a cleaner shape which is elegant. But no-one should listen to me about clothes!

(Also, when is Toast going to stop using those bleepy white contrast buttons? I spent a fortune buying alternatives, then ended up selling anyway, before swapping buttons or wearing even once :)

Saurus72 · 30/06/2022 21:20

@ScottishMouse i would keep the 2 on the top row. Although having said that I have the one on the top right and while I live in dresses, I never really wear that one.

Gonegrey31 · 30/06/2022 21:21

Hello Stravaig I still have the purple and gold maxi skirt and the sapphire blue velvet gown . Both worn regularly so worth the investment many years ago . The gown is my most favourite ever Toast purchase!

ScottishMouse · 30/06/2022 21:22

Ha ha @Stravaig , I love the contrast buttons! Each to their own, eh?
Thanks for your thoughts. The black chalkboard one looks slimmer as I am squeezed into it! Another reason for selling perhaps, although I’m not quite ready to give up on getting back to my pre-covid/pre-perimenopause size.

ScottishMouse · 30/06/2022 21:25

Thanks @Saurus72 ! The top right one hasn’t had an outing in a long time. It’s too tight now, but even when it wasn’t, there was something about the colours that didn’t draw me to it when looking at what to put on. I LOVE the orange Edith one, but I think that is more in theory than actually on me. The blue Edith got a lot of wear last summer, but now that I am a little less comfortable with my weight, I feel it looks frumpy.

ScottishMouse · 30/06/2022 21:29

@Stravaig, I love the look of the medicine pouch. Would like to see it in the flesh though.

Stravaig · 30/06/2022 21:29

@Gonegrey31 Wise woman! Wish I'd done the same.

@ScottishMouse Comfort first, always! I'm in a similar boat, wondering if my current shape is chocolate or peri/menopause.

TheChattyRat · 30/06/2022 21:42

@dudsville your typos made me giggle!

@ScottishMouse I find it quite hard to tell on the small screen with a lot of the photo cropped but I really like the top right dress (the chalkboard one) on you.

Not sure that the new gingham is nicer than the others - it looks a bit big or too oversized in style to me. I think it is something about the sleeves. Nice material though.

Not sure if my ramblings will help!

ScottishMouse · 30/06/2022 21:57

That is indeed the question @stravaig. Will laying off the sweet stuff help, or does plummeting estrogen mean I am now doomed to this new shape that doesn’t feel like me? And then of course the plummeting estrogen seems to require more sweet stuff to deal with. It’s a vicious cycle. One day I think I will join a gym, and the next I think I love food too much and should just sell all the clothes that don’t fit so I don’t see them taunting me.

Stravaig · 30/06/2022 22:18

@ScottishMouse My thoughts exactly! It does feel like a choice point. I read that the weight gain and changed shape isn't inevitable - however the lived experience of generations of women tends to suggest otherwise. If I continue like this, I'll have nothing to wear, and lots of early Toast to sell.
Perhaps some ice-cream while I mull it over and make a plan ...

EmmatheStageRat · 30/06/2022 22:53

@ScottishMouse , I think the Chalkboard dress looks really flattering on you and I also like the orange Edith. I’m less enamoured of the new check dress and the blue Edith doesn’t necessarily look the same size as the orange? Having said all of that, I did own a bargainous Chalkboard dress but I gifted it to my mum as I seem to recall that the fabric was fairly high maintenance and required much ironing to look halfway decent?

Stoic123 · 01/07/2022 08:04

@ScottishMouse - I like the top two (checks) from photos but...

I also have the orange and 'nurse' Ediths. My orange has been parked into a holding area until I can get my boobs shrunk a little as I think it will look better then. My 'nurse' is so easy to just throw on and comfortable to wear especially on 'fat' days. Even if a bit shapeless, colour is flattering - can't really see if same for you from photos but think we may suit similar colours. Taro check (I have shirt) is also a great colour on me.

So my pennies worth:

  • No intention of cutting down the icecream/graceful acceptance of evolving figure = Taro Blue check & Nurse
  • Only a temporary blip and will be back to fell running tomorrow = top right check and orange Edith.
So, basically, I'd wait a bit. Sorry, no help Grin
Countmeout · 01/07/2022 08:11

I think I’d just hold on to everything @ScottishMouse because I’ve got rid of things in the past and now thinking why did I do that?

ScottishMouse · 01/07/2022 08:20

Yes, there is that @Countmeout !

Laska2Meryls · 01/07/2022 09:06

Plus you wont get much for Toast on ebay any more , I have just sold a few things, but withdrew the last two because people are not even bidding much over the low starting price .. And ebay fees are so much these days. I get so annoyed that they charge fees on postage now
You may do better on Vinted though ..

OP posts:
Snowyowl78 · 01/07/2022 09:33

Toast is sending my order from yesterday in FOUR separate parcels. Going to be even more unpopular with the posties.

ScottishMouse · 01/07/2022 09:35

Why do you think that is @Laska2Meryls ? I would understand why fewer folk are selling on eBay because of the fees, but why would Toast not be selling so well anymore I wonder. Is it simply a case of folk tightening their belts generally, or is there something eBay or Toast specific at work?
I have a very small amount of wardrobe space, and I hate to see it cluttered with things I hardly ever wear, so I do tend to sell them if seeing them there is just making me feel bad, but I have had one or two selling regrets alright.

ScottishMouse · 01/07/2022 09:43

Oh that is so annoying @Snowyowl78

Countmeout · 01/07/2022 09:45

I would use buy it now if selling @Laska2Meryls and @ScottishMouse . That way you get the price you want . If it doesn’t sell after a few goes at that I would generally hold on to it and try at another time. People buying on auction are looking for a bargain and don’t want to pay a reasonable price imo.

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 01/07/2022 10:08

I’m having much the same experience on eBay, I’ve sold a few bits on Vinted that didn’t sell on eBay but prices seem to be quite low at the moment. I might hang on to my stuff until after the summer and see what it’s like then.

Laska2Meryls · 01/07/2022 10:27

Yes I agree people want a bargain .. if you get half price your buying for something bnwt ( as shamefully I have recently sold a couple of things ) ypu are doing well.. Its taught me a good lesson about only keeping stuff I absolutely love and not the 'almost theres' , or the ' would be good fors' inthe case of occasions you might wear things for (usually dresses in my case) .. This is something that I have been guilty of in previous sales .
Now if I love it and am going to wear it right away it stays....

I have recently had a big clear out but still have a Toast dress bought for a 'covid wedding that didn't happen' and a linen dress from last year, I loved but haven't found an occasion for wearing .. they've not been ebayed yet but may be yet.. ..

Laska2Meryls · 01/07/2022 10:30

Im not sure how the 'shamefully' got into that last message.. I meant that I had only got starting price .. oh for an edit button
