I notice these days that it is cool to poke fun at middle aged mothers on social media. Pearl clutchers. Boring. Transphobic. Blah blah blah.

Except we are the ones who hold the purse strings. I am the GC person who has access to money in this house. My inclusive 'open-minded' DC do not. And I literally cant figure out how their tights will look, shorn of all this porny messaging.

Yes I find this amusing too.

In the UK it's cold for about half the year, a lot of tights sales to be made. And demographically, the vast majority of people buying them will be middle aged women purchasing for themselves and/or school-aged daughters. But some twonk in Marketing thinks they'll be tempted by toddler fetish imagery.

DomesticatedZombie · 13/05/2022 14:38

According to some people it's THE WORST.

Whitedamask · 13/05/2022 14:39

Well, it's certainly got people talking about them, which I guess is the whole point of the exercise.

JanisMoplin · 13/05/2022 14:39

I am a first generation brown GC immigrant.

Men can wear dresses and tights and celebrate fetishes and big up their birthing bodies. And I can shop at a site that has women who look and dress like me.

Are snag targeting Bronies now?

What do they want us to do about it? Or are we just to accept that we’re open to criticism by virtue of our sex and our age?

DomesticatedZombie · 13/05/2022 14:41

I think we're just to shut up and smile, tbh. Not sure.

Yep, first thing I thought when I saw the pic and commented upthread. I won't be surprised to see Furries making an appearance before long, either.

Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters · 13/05/2022 14:49

Sorry @bellinisurge I think my attempt at satire didn't work and am not sure what you mean about filling my boots (which are definitely not high heeled in any case)? I am in agreement with the majority in that the advert is grim and was just trying to annoy the mighty Adrian. I have no knowledge as to what said teacher does in her own time or her own home - my point was that Adrian was the one who brought in the trans argument and is therefore being transphobic by suggesting that all transwomen are fetishists whereas some are middle-class and middle-aged and even like to wear Boden. As far as I could tell the criticisms on here, all justified imho, were relating to the fetishist nature of the advert. Much to Adrian's dismay, I can cope with men wearing dresses and being GC.

Cherryblossoms85 · 13/05/2022 14:53

Their advertising just makes me think they're not for people like me, so I don't buy them.

Did you just mis-gender a transwoman?

Nahhh, in real life, most of us recognise that there are much more serious issues than men (or women) in patterned hosiery.

If you think that's what's going on here then you need to up your mess. They're clearly not working.

Butteryflakycrust83 · 13/05/2022 14:56

They are a hugely successful company. They do not NEED the business of, as PP said, middle age mums buying tights for themselves and their children.

There was an squally vile SNAG thread a few months back because they dared use a fat woman in lingerie.

Cry harder.

@DomesticatedZombie
But he isn't actually dressed as a little girl is he. He's not wearing a sleep suit and a nappy (and I believe there are people who actually do that). His image isn't objectionable because it isn't a little girl.

I could dress up as Gerry Adams and give away free Irish car bomb shots but the image wouldn't actually be offensive unless I read as GA.

Intresting choice.

Did you think of a man who was pushed out of political power, not for allegations of being associated with blowing up people with car bombs, but for being associated with allegations of coveing up for child sex abuse?

PS the T-shirt should be factual and name the correct county, which would be the UK.

Where does their custom come from then? Where have you accessed a breakdown of their sales?

JanisMoplin · 13/05/2022 14:59

Really odd to see middle aged mum being used as a veiled insult on a parenting site.

I have brought SNAG from the beginning, when it was basically just black tights you could buy. They have expanded massively.

Their custom will come from mainly fat, young women with alternative fashion style who will be much more liberal in their political views.

HailAdrian · 13/05/2022 15:02

Who's been using 'middle aged' as an insult? I thought I said 'middle class.' Mumsnet is mostly white, middle class 'mummies,' isn't it?

ReadyToMoveIt · 13/05/2022 15:03

Much more liberal than who? Middle aged mums? I had no idea we all shared the same politic views by virtue of our age and sex.

More liberal than MOST people.

WellThatsMeScrewed · 13/05/2022 15:05

@HailAdrian oh so it’s just women you don’t like?

Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters · 13/05/2022 15:08

So @HailAdrian's inclusiveness just doesn't include middle-class white women. I get it now.

I'm not a mummy, I'm a mammy. Stop with the xenophobia.

FourTeaFallOut · 13/05/2022 15:10

I'm not sure what's taken more of a hiding this decade, the word woman or liberal?

ReadyToMoveIt · 13/05/2022 15:11

I didn’t realise being middle class was something we could be insulted for either.
