@TheChattyRat both shirts look lovely but I think, if I had to choose, I’d go for the first, slightly darker one

SmaugMum · 22/01/2022 20:11

@AFingerofFudge @Countmeout, it’s the bonnet - it’s just like the one that ‘Ma’ would wear! It’s a beautiful hat but I’m imagining the reactions if I were to wear it in Northumberland or Pembrokeshire (our main holiday destinations)…

@Laska2Meryls, another convert to the cult of the apple green cardigan!

I wanted to blow the trumpet for some good customer service by Toast; I ordered the tea hamper in the sale, using Christmas money that came with a stipulation that it should be spent on something indulgent and for me and not for my two daughters. Unfortunately, the Cara Guthrie tea beaker had a sizeable chip in the base - I contacted Toast and they couriered out a new ceramic cup, no bother. Happy!

@TheChattyRat, both shirts look lovely so can you afford both, given you’ve bought two for the price of one? I love Toast shirts but, oh, the ironing!

Stoic123 · 22/01/2022 20:51

I think the apple green cardigan is gorgeous - both online and in real life. Unfortunately, the colour didn't suit me at all - but I do envy all you cardi owners. Enjoy!

I am not sure about the new season - but I know as soon as I see the collection in real life and you lovely enablers start posting photos, I will see the cut/shape/possibilities and the bank account will get a pounding.

dudsville · 22/01/2022 21:13

Meant to include a pic. This is the tee with the weird high neck. I was aware of it from time to time throughout the day but it wasn't uncomfortable.

dudsville · 22/01/2022 21:19

And I agree with you @stoic123, I do fancy a pair of cords in the current collection, and I too like the brick check pjs @afingeroffudge and I might treat myself for my next holiday, but there's not loads I'm hankering after in the current collection. I'll still look forward to a sale though as I like that they bring out old stock!

TheChattyRat · 23/01/2022 09:23

Thanks all, I think I am going to keep both Grin

ToastCosILoveIt · 23/01/2022 09:46

I am off to vist a Toast shop today. i actually dreamt about Toast Xmas Blush = that they had bought out a limited and a vintage collection and when I went to the shop there were queues around the block to try things on!

On my hit list is the vive la difference leather bag, the indigo denim pleated trousers, (both of those have been out for a while I think), the spring check ruffle neck shirt, the vale print circle neck dress (already have the shirt and love it but i know from experience that sometimes buying a shirt and a dress in the same print is a mistake as I gravitate to only one of them), the log cabin print bandana, the patch pocket cotton linen skirt and the alix indigo gingham trousers. I might also try the cord dart trousers. I will report back! Naturally hoping i don't like all of them as there will be decisions to be made or I will be bankrupt!

Countmeout · 23/01/2022 09:58

Oooh @ToastCosILoveIt I love that Vive la difference bag. Please report back. I may get it for my birthday (awfully hopeful by nature) . It looked bigger than I thought on a model recently.

ToastCosILoveIt · 23/01/2022 10:21

@Countmeout, will do, I agree it looks bigger when placed with the model. I have a lot of bags so it would really need to be something special to make my buy it. Also, it will need to be able to hang near the hip, not too high up.

I should also say that I wore the tie neck chambrey shirt on Friday and love, love, love it. It is defintely one to size down on: 10 was plenty big enough.

faustina · 23/01/2022 10:36

@ToastCosILoveIt - there is an absolutely beautiful pic of someone wearing that spring check shirt inToast Cambridge on Instagram. Have you seen it?

SmaugMum · 23/01/2022 10:55

@ToastCosILoveIt, please do report back as I always enjoy a vicarious trip to a Toast store. I also have my eye on that bandana and the Vale print dress.

For anyone looking for new bags, I can really recommend Ally Capellino; I have bags and purses of hers dating back 15 years or so and they look even better as they age. They are minimal fuss, beautifully made, robust and, in my opinion, work well with the Toast aesthetic. I have different styles in the Calvert leather.

Saurus72 · 23/01/2022 10:55

@ToastCosILoveIt will pray that you like just the right number of pieces 😊. Any pictures of the dress and skirt would be hugely appreciated, they’re kind of on my watchlist.

ToastCosILoveIt · 23/01/2022 11:31

I will try to get photos and report back. I have to time my visit with how long my husband wants to spend in Waterstones! @faustina, I did see that Cambridge picture. I hadn't been keen on the shirt until I saw her wearing it! That photo also made me look at the pleated indigo trousers as I think that may be what she is wearing too?

AFingerofFudge · 23/01/2022 12:29

@faustina I saw that ruffle shirt on Instagram too and it immediately went to the top of my list!

Gonegrey31 · 23/01/2022 12:37

I love that ruffle shirt too , however I have just splurged on the Fine Stripe Cotton Linen shirt in Storm Blue . I bought my normal Toast size and it fits perfectly ( I sometimes size down in dresses). Beautiful mid blue colour and nice stiff fabric - can be worn alone or over a T shirt . My indulgence after not having any luck in the sale .
I occasionally have reason to visit Cambridge for a Toast and Brora try on - sadly the Brora shop in Cambridge is about to close . Boo

TerrierOrTerror · 23/01/2022 13:09

My sale top (the striped Pomegranate one) arrived I love it, I think I would have prefer a Medium rather than small but not enough to return it. Does complicate guessing my size with the Gabi trousers though. Might take a trip to the Richmond store soon, though I know it is pretty small and poky!

faustina · 23/01/2022 13:09

@Gonegrey31 - for an awful minute I thought you said Toast was closing! I'm sorry Brora is going, especially as JL doesn't stock them anymore - those are my local Toast and Brora shops. It was under scaffolding for such a long time, I was always amazed that anyone could find them. What a shame!

Gonegrey31 · 23/01/2022 13:21

Faustina yes, I’m so sorry too that particular branch of Brora was my favourite.

iguanadonna · 23/01/2022 14:20

Been lurking for ages because was grumpy about too many billowy sleeves.

But roused to voice my admiration for how @billydilly wears that golden dress. Wow.

Also big fan of @Marmite71 's new outfits with the brown trousers.

Ordered lots of things to try from sale but as said, billowing sleeves. These must work for someone but yikes not me.

Also photos and sizing not helpful. Very difficult to get realistic sense of garments from the pics. And sizing so variable. That green mac would, dh pointed out, only really work on a giantess with a Clouseau complex. At least in an xl - which was a tent on this tall size 18/20.

But have cheered up and looked at new stuff and ordered the grid check crinkled dress because have and love its blue predecessor and it shouldn't make me look like I'm about to stuff DCs into a covered wagon. Will hopefully arrive on Wednesday.

billydilly · 23/01/2022 15:13

Why thank you! Billowy sleeves, yes. I bought a Toast blouse with such sleeves and am yet to wear it. I should have returned it but couldn't be arsed!

Countmeout · 23/01/2022 16:17

Is the ruffle shirt black and green or navy and green ?

ToastCosILoveIt · 23/01/2022 20:02

I am back from my trip, walking there and back so clocking up 23,000 steps in the process. I tried on lots and bought three things.

The patch pocket linen cotton skirt looked tiny on the hanger in a size 10 and I expected it wouldn't go near me but was surprised that because it sits high and on the waist, that it did up. However, I wondered about wearing it all day and eating and if the waist needed to be a tad looser but they didn't have the 12 in store for me to try on. The 12 might also look too volumous below the waist. It has a zip and button fastening so no room to move buttons. I might order the 12 to try.

The green cotton linen shirt dress: fab on and very flattering. the 12 was too big and the 10 fitted but there was the merest hint of a pull on one of the buttons at the bust which has made me question it. I suspect a size 11 would have been perfect. I may try it on again but it is very expensive so it has to be perfect.

The Vale Print Circle Neck dress is fab and perfect in a 10. It is one of the items that I bought despite aready having the shirt.

I also bought the Spring Check Ruffle Neck Shirt. The medium felt perfect for my size 12 body. The body of the shirt is panelled and neater fitting but with the lovely sleeves that are deepset towards the waist. I had not noticed from the website that it doesn't unbutton all the way down. The shirt is as light as a feather so you could wear it in summer and feel cool. I couldn't pass it by and I know I will wear it lots.

I tried the indigo pleated trousers on in a 12 and while they fitted, they did nothing for me. I think they are more suited to a pear shape than an apple shape. I already have the Annies and the Ashley jeans so don't really need another pair.

I had a good look at both of the Viva bags: there is one from last season (with two press stud fastenings) and one for this year. Last year's one is more of a tan/orange leather while this year's is much browner. I was able to compare them side by side and on balance i prefer last year's version (the more tan one) and i bought it. I will post photo's of where it sits when worn cross body. They also had the Bleu De Chauffe Bijou Bag in store and goodness, it was beautiful. I would have bought it in a flash but the internal compartments meant I would get my iPhone X in but struggled to get it out again. It is a lovely piece if you have a normal sized phone. The Viva easily fits my phone.

I tried on the Alix gingham trousers in a 10. They fitted well but they looked wrong around the crotch as someone said upthread.

I looked at the cord dart trousers on the hanger but they looked very heavy and wintery and so I didn't try them on.

A few things that I hadn't gone to look at: the seamless neat sweater in orange (coquelicot) is lovely in the flesh. It comes up really big. The XS fitted although the S was probably a better fit. A really lovely jumper but i didn't buy it. I also tried on the Gingham Cotton Wool top in a 10: really lovely with a neat body but great sleeves. I was very tempted. Finally, I saw the Loop Back Jersey trousers when I was flicking through the nightwear/leisure wear. I would never have looked at them online but in store they are lovely. They only had the M and I think I could have sized down to an S and so will order them online along with the matching top. They will be really lovely for lounging around in.

That was it, helpful sales assistants as ever. My husband told me i had been in there exactly an hour when I emerged. One of the sales assistants was wearing the Lofty Alpaca Cable Cardigan and it looked lovely. I tried it on and it is so soft and such a lovely shade, slightly two tone (with white threads showing through) which I don't think is clear from the website. Again, very tempting but a lot of money....

Photos to follow!

ilovecherries · 23/01/2022 23:21

I bought the loop back trousers last year, Toast. I swithered about them for ages because I thought they were a ridiculous price, and I bought a £40 pair from Hush to compare, but they just weren’t the same. Eventually I caved in and bought and wore them loads. They washed well and didn’t sag at the knee. I have the matching top as well, and when I want to be a bit smarter I’ve worn them with M&S black cashmere roll neck In the summer I’ve worn them with a band tee and trainers. (My favourite meatloaf tee from many years ago, now irreplaceable 😢)

ToastCosILoveIt · 23/01/2022 23:34

Thanks @ilovecherries, did you have to size down in the trousers and the top? I have put the 10 and 12 of both in my basket. The 12 in the shop felt very generous but then the 10 might be a bit too snug.

Countmeout · 24/01/2022 07:30

What a great day you had @ToastCosILoveIt. I thought the vive la different bag looked browner online. I prefer the tan too, look forward to seeing pictures of how it looks.
