What do the cool mums wear?

Jacaranda75 · 30/12/2021 10:36

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

@Doggydoodah123

Couldn't give a flying shit what the cool mums wear, I'm just me.
What beings you then to the store and beauty section of the forum? Designed especially to talk about fashion, clothes and style

DOC would look good in anything!Envy

@expatmigrant

I'd stay away from fat face, White Stuff, Seasalt and Boden Grin And no patterns.
I like all of those except Boden Grin

Therefore cementing my "not cool" status!

I've started school runs again with my dgs age 6 so primary. I'm probably one of the oldest there at 48! In the morning I must look like hell then afternoon pick up they must think someone else has come for him 🤣 We don't live in a posh area so mostly leggings and sweat pants seem to be the way. Though my looks is more vintage/rock/whatever fits me vibe 😍

To be fair she doesn't attempt to be cool she's more classic/country chic which is timeless in certain circles but comes and goes in general trends. A few years ago the mums at the school gates were dripping in striped or floral joules and boden but it's mostly long gone now
allfurcoatnoknickers · 30/12/2021 15:14

Also, I'd like to note here that I don't think I'm particularly cool Grin. But I do notice what the cool people wear even if I don't actually wear it IYSWIM.

I've always had a bit of a dark academia vibe and will continue to do so after the TikTok crowd have moved on.

gunnersgold · 30/12/2021 15:18

I think you are either 'cool' or you are not . You can either put an outfit together or you can't . You can't really teach that . It's about knowing what suits you and wearing it with commitment ! I live in a very conservative town and it often look out of place which suits me just fine ! I don't want to look like everyone else !

Lollipop999 · 30/12/2021 15:20

Not sure if I’ve ever been cool...probably not... but it’s hard to look cool or stylish on the school run when you walk to school, and the weather is usually bad, and you either have your work clothes/uniform on or your wellies and dog walking gear. (I walk dog after drop off on non work days).

snapsieplopp · 30/12/2021 15:23

It is good enough for the Duchess of Cambridge, anyway. But then, is she cool?

IMO no

DarlingHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh · 30/12/2021 15:23

Veja, Mint Velvet, not Joules, Zara, Cos.

Though I agree with pp cool is in how you carry it off, never really what you wear. You can wear Veja and look frumpy and MS& trainers but looks quite stylish. I'm afraid the cool factors is derived from personality it is never about the actual clothes but your spirit and attitude.

DarlingHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh · 30/12/2021 15:25

'Cool' mums wouldn't ask this question to begin with, they buy what they like, have a decisive sense of style and just wear what they like the look of.

BooksAndGin · 30/12/2021 15:26

Cool mums don't worry about what other mums find cool, there's your problem.

snapsieplopp · 30/12/2021 15:27

I think the cool people set the trends & are braver so by the time it's adopted they've moved on if that makes sense.

FabriqueBelgique · 30/12/2021 15:32

@snapsieplopp

Are we talking about style/in fashion or looking cool? I don't think they are the same.
Yes, this. Trying to look “cool” sounds too try-hard for adults.
NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/12/2021 15:32

I'm loving this in a slightly bitter way, as despite wearing a lot of these things for the school run, I was never, ever a Cool Mum because I wasn't tall, slim and wealthy.

FabriqueBelgique · 30/12/2021 15:33

To me, a woman looks “cool” if she clearly dresses for herself and genuinely doesn’t care how others take it.

CoedenNadolig · 30/12/2021 15:35

I'm sorry is this a thing now 😳😂

I can just about get myself and child to school on time and me to work and then rush for the pick up. 😂

I spend most my days in bootcut jeans and various jumpers/blouses, aviators if it's sunny or a bobble hat if it's cold.

Footwear is a black wedge boot in winter and trainers in spring. I don't do sandals because of work we always need enclosed shoes due to needle stick injury concerns.

I can't say anyone has ever really said anything about the way I dress. And if they've thought it I don't care. I've got clothes on sometimes the right way, have spend a day with my t-shirt on inside out and never noticed

Trend for some in the area is leggings, puffy coat, trainers and sunglasses in December. Is that "the look".

Good luck OP, you are braver than me, I can't be dealing with "trends". I set my own I think haha. 😂

doubleshotcappuccino · 30/12/2021 15:35

Definitely not a cool mum but styled by by teen I love my Stan Smith trainers and oysho leggings ( more than lululemons). Despite my stylist's best efforts she can't get me out of M and S jeans I love them .. also love a bit of Desigual for shirts and T-shirts .. all blended in with a lot of finds and old stuff .. have spent the year in trainers whatever I'm wearing and forever grateful for the trend and hopeful it remains

seekinglondonlife · 30/12/2021 15:35

I've never looked at someone and thought 'you clearly dress for yourself' what would that look like?
ILoveHuskies · 30/12/2021 15:38

Being cool is about wearing exactly what you please and feeling confident in it. And also not caring about being cool

I am not cool, as I care more
about being cool than I'd like 😂

SoftSheen · 30/12/2021 15:41

I'd stay away from fat face, White Stuff, Seasalt and Boden

Most Mums waiting outside my DCs' school definitely aren't cool then Grin

Yeah. You can't shop for The Look.
