What do the cool mums wear?

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

What's a dark academia style?

think preppy but with a darker gothic twist with a smidge of boarding school

musicviking1 · 30/12/2021 15:43

I couldn't give two fucks quite frankly.

ILoveHuskies · 30/12/2021 15:45

@MyDcAreMarvel

Ripped mom jeans , a body , flannel and Air Force 1’s . Cropped puffa jacket if really cold.
This is the uniform of my daughter and every teen girl about 12-17 around here

IMHO an adult woman in this get up would look silly and try hard

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 30/12/2021 15:46

Not sure what's 'cool' but surely it's difficult to define? I spend my days in skinny black jeans, band T-shirt's and either converse or new rocks boots. I've been told I don't look like a mum but I probably don't look cool either 😂

Thickasmincepie · 30/12/2021 15:46

I thought buying something by a brand because the brand is supposed to be cool instantly makes you a follower and not cool.

Like wearing a big sticker saying: "look at my coolness and despair!"

Benjispruce5 · 30/12/2021 15:47

Flannel? Is that a thing? Attached to face or what?

User310 · 30/12/2021 15:47

I just wear plain jeans that I buy from next, I always wear plain-ish tops too.

I do however, wear a pair of Prada sunglasses in the summer and either superga pumps, new balance trainers or my trusty Nike running trainers.

I then have an Apatchy cross body bag in two different colours.

Erm, I also have a shirt jacket in black and a very nice navy trench coat from John Lewis.

.. I do wear ear muffs sometimes too- this is not cool but my daughter has ‘borrowed’ them and now wears them.

Apparently my teenager and her friends think I’m ‘a cool mum’.

MiddleParking · 30/12/2021 15:48

Do people not know what sunglasses are? They’re not to protect you from heat Confused

Anyway, I think coolness is mostly inbuilt and centred on (usually) on your figure and your hair. It’s also a different proposition to just looking good. Amanda always looks great, but she never looks cool.

Itsnotdeep · 30/12/2021 15:49

Duchess of cambridge is not cool.

@musicviking1 then what are doing on this thread? Have you SERIOUSLY got nothing better to do?

@Jacaranda75 what do you consider cool?

thebigpurpleone · 30/12/2021 15:52

@mynameiscalypso

I also think some posters are taking 'school run' literally. In my mind, it's more of a catch all term for the kind of boring stuff you have to do with children like go to the park or take them swimming or whatever. Prior to children, I had work clothes, going out clothes and slobbish at home clothes. The transition to a new type of occasion - toddler groups, school runs etc - was hard especially when you throw in a post-partum body which may or may not be the same as it was before. For people who are interesting in fashion and style (or even if you're not), it can be quite challenging as part of the wider difficulty there can be in finding your identity as a parent.
Completely agree with this.
liveforsummer · 30/12/2021 15:53

Honestly what a bizarre thread on a normally friendly helpful and friendly forum subtopic. OP even made it clear she was using a previous thread as inspiration for the language used in the title and post.

AnnaBolina · 30/12/2021 15:53

I wear long vintage coats, almost always have a hat on, usually with a hat pin, Victorian style lace up leather boots and am usually in a dress. I get a lot of comments and compliments on my style, especially in the playground. I don't see anyone else wearing anything like it and I'm a million miles away from the mums with the puffy jackets and sunglasses whatever the weather.

I think you should wear what you're happy in and bollocks to anyone who thinks you're not "cool" because you're not wearing what they are.

timestheyarechanging · 30/12/2021 15:58

For me - depends what I'm doing afterwards but generally at this time of year - New balance trainers, cowboy boots or converse with patterned dresses (often with roll neck underneath), leather jacket or camel coat.
Fit/Flared jeans, black leather shirt jacket, cashmere jumper and ankle boots (red to match jumper).
Gym leggings, trainers and Patagonia puffer coat or 'teddy' coat.
Breton long sleeved t shirt, trench coat, straight leg jeans and Chelsea boots.
North face jacket, leggings and hiking boots if going straight for a Long walk.
I buy decent brands but second hand and much of my wardrobe is over a decade old!

I like the sound of this.
kittyhello · 30/12/2021 16:09

And this is why I hate it when S&B threads come up on AIBU. All the 'I wear any old rags' posters pile on.

I'm no longer a school run mum however when I look around at what cool women were wearing this autumn I noticed it was:
Am oversized jumper/tee
Mom jeans just above the ankle
Ankle socks with Birkenstocks.

Also a lot are now a lot are wearing a chunky trainer, SB leggings and oversized puffa with white Adidas socks worn over the leggings.

I am not cool however I like these looks but can't pull them off myself.

See photos for examples.

I assumed it meant a thick, flannel shirt (?)

Interesting responses. I'm long past wanting to be cool!

Maireas · 30/12/2021 16:15

@Alayalaya

Surely you just wear whatever you’ve had on for work that day? Do people get changed into clean outfits for the five minutes you spend standing at the school gate?
I think this must be about sahms, or maybe those wfh.

Please don’t tell me that wearing Hush is frowned upon?. I’ve only recently discovered them and they actually make clothes that I love wearing.[/quote]
No, most definitely not frowned upon. I meant to say that's what the stylish mums are wearing, sorry if it didn't come across that way!

Maireas · 30/12/2021 16:19

@BlairWaldorfLovesShopping

What’s the big deal with wearing sunglasses in winter? For those of us with pale eyes, the slightest hint of winter sunshine means that they’re necessary, especially when driving Confused
I wish we had winter sunshine. It's been permanent twilight where I live for about 2 months Sad
Maireas · 30/12/2021 16:20

@Winecurestiredness

With clothing...anything from ASOS or a brand that isn't mumsy
What's a "mumsy" brand?.
Lovemusic33 · 30/12/2021 16:22

I don’t like any of the things suggested 😬😬, I think anyone going to do the school run dressing in the same ‘cool’ clothes as everyone else is wearing will look pretty ‘uncool’.

I wear clothes that I like, not clothes that other people are all wearing. Of course if I see someone wearing something I like I might buy it but in the playground that’s pretty rare. Everyone here dressing in outdoor gear, farming gear and riding gear 🤣….oh and a gym wear. Gym wear is fine if your at the gym.
