What do the cool mums wear?

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

I always wear SB leggings and either a long lululemon puffer coat or a shorter SB one. That's because I always go to yoga after drop off.

I also wear a SB woolly hat. And either white dad trainers (if it's not wet) or blundstone boots with thick socks (if it is). I carry a yoga mat.

At pick up I'm often in the same gear as I wfh and cba to change.

I think it's a side effect of getting older that I no longer care what I wear when I do drop off, but nor do I notice what other people wear.

It's a mishmash at our school though. I think the coolest mums are always thin. I disagree with a pp, I think the most effortless looking mums, probably put a great deal of effort into looking like that. And expense probably. Their hair is wellcut/coloured and they are wearing expensive clothes.

First of all, Cool is a matter of personal perception. You can not buy it either. However you choose to dress is irrelevant as long as you emit a healthy confident glow.

A heavy drinking, overweight, smoking mum who hasn’t washed or brushed her hair in a few days wearing a Balenciaga coat, Yeezys and Gucci crossbody will still look rough compared to the non smoking healthy eating put together Mum who wears Primark and a charity shop found Radley bag, in my eyes anyway.

Style is inherent, fashion is not.

This is so funny.

This whole thread is about making judgements about what people are wearing but so many are furious at the thought people might think they look a bit of a tit in sunglasses in the middle of winter.

snapsieplopp · 30/12/2021 14:36

😆

liveforsummer · 30/12/2021 14:36

@evilharpy yes I actually get migraines from bright lights. Not so from summer sun but from winter glare and from un covered LED lights etc. I also really struggle to drive at night. I didn't know it was a thing. My eyes are green though so not especially pale. Might mention it to my optician next rime I'm there

expatmigrant · 30/12/2021 14:38

I'd stay away from fat face, White Stuff, Seasalt and Boden Grin
And no patterns.

Girlonit · 30/12/2021 14:39

Oh @liveforsummer, you see I definitely think the hippyish variety sound cool. I love that thrown together clashing patterns/prints and textures that works even though it shouldn’t. I feel like a fraud if I try it though.

Bitofachinwag · 30/12/2021 14:41

@AuntieDolly

Who do you think is coolest - Amanda or Liz?
Liz

And just googled to see what Vejas are. They're £100!

CallMeK · 30/12/2021 14:44

The private school mum uniform is Sweaty Betty clothes, Gucci trainers, Gucci disco bag or Mulberry bag, Ray Ban aviator sunglasses, Canada Goose parka, Botox, Invisalign and sometimes micro bladed eyebrows (only the younger ones do the eyebrows and they are very well done/not obvious). Driving LR Discovery or Defender.

Doggydoodah123 · 30/12/2021 14:45

Couldn't give a flying shit what the cool mums wear, I'm just me.

Private school mum here but have never worn any of the items listed
seekinglondonlife · 30/12/2021 14:51

Totally agree @Thewiseoneincognito. Too many people feel that wearing designer names makes them look good, when that really isn't the case.

Yes it would look ridiculous on me but they look fab. It was my parents style in the 80's and I got teased mercilessly about my mums colourful jumper dresses that she'd knitted herself at my small town primary so I look fondly upon it and think it's ironic that it's so effortlessly cool with a demographic far wealthier than we were
SmallPrawnEnergy · 30/12/2021 14:56

If you have to ask you’re trying to hard and that’ll be obvious when you rock up to the school gates trying to hard. Just be you.

Elodeastar · 30/12/2021 14:58

'Cool' people wear whatever they feel comfortable and happy in, surely, not what other folk deem to be the 'best'?

Exactly!
CinnamonJellyBeans · 30/12/2021 15:00

Their work clothes, as that's where the cool mums are going once they've dropped off the kids.

olympicsrock · 30/12/2021 15:04

Right I’m clearly not cool . Amanda who ? Liz who?

bizboz · 30/12/2021 15:04

Surely people just wear what they will need for the rest of the day? I drop the kids at breakfast club then go to work so I'm in my work clothes. To be fair I don't see any other parent's so wouldn't know what they are wearing. I'm a teacher though so see the parents picking up their kids. I don't really notice what they wear, especially at this time of the year as mainly you can see coats. If you want to look stylish on the school run a good coat will be your best investment as it will be all people see for at least 6 months of the year.

MintyGreenDream · 30/12/2021 15:06

The coolest looking mum at our school wears a combination of tan Teddy coat usually with black skinny jeans, converse and a extra wide snuggly scarf.Black hair and bright red lips and "geek" black glasses complete the look.

WingingItSince1973 · 30/12/2021 15:07

Good question. I'd rather be friends with Liz 😀

Characters from the BBC show Motherland
JuergenSchwarzwald · 30/12/2021 15:08

I am very obviously not cool because I didn't even know what Vejas were.

However, it was ever thus. I was the square one at school, too.

A few weeks ago there was a thread on here about what to wear for the school run and people thought a Breton top and jeans would do. It is good enough for the Duchess of Cambridge, anyway. But then, is she cool? I doubt it, as I wear Breton tops and jeans as a uniform, though I don't do the school run anymore.

AuntMargo · 30/12/2021 15:09

if you have to try to be cool ,then you're not !!

Covetthee · 30/12/2021 15:09

Depends on what you percieve as cool. Take motherland for example

Some think the pristine designer look is cool- eg- made in essex type styles like Amanda which i find horribly tacky

Others think something else is cool. For me i atm i love julia’s look in motherland, to some she looks scruffh but I think she looks cool because it looks like she has chucked whatever is on the floor on but looks good in it.

I think if you have understanding of fashion/ style you’ll always look cool to others

I can’t pull off that look but i just make sure i look neat and clean
