What do the cool mums wear?

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

I find it interesting that skinny jeans are a no but leather look leggings are stylish. So it’s not the cut of the trousers but the material? 😂 I’m so clueless.

Kind of, skinny black trousers, leggings are a thing & they could definitely look cool depending upon the wearer.

Black trousers are coming back more worn instead of jeans like they used to be in the 90s

I think not being afraid to wear colour helps - people always look like they’re more confident in a bright colour. Today I’m wearing a pair of very battered mom jeans I’ve had for a few years now, a big grey jumper, bright yellow reebok trainers and a huge rainbow scarf. This is my usual sort of school run outfit. Big baggy jumper, huge bright scarf and some colourful trainers.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 31/12/2021 08:31

Hahaha, rural school here, mums rock up in their horse riding gear or wellies.

thebigpurpleone · 31/12/2021 08:59

I think leather leggings are a timeless wardrobe staple. @Jacaranda75 I follow the style fairy (Naomi Clarke) on Facebook and I think she does casual in a stylish way very well.

ReinReinRein · 31/12/2021 09:13

@Twinkleylight

Do people still roll up jeans? Or do they buy ankle grazes to wear with boots?
Yes I'd like to know this too. Can anyone stylish or cool or in the know on here answer this please?

Cool or not, what's the current trend for trousers and shoes? Examples would be welcome might start a thread.

re: Motherland - the only stylish/cool one is Meg, but that's deliberate. Amanda is supposed to be very uptight and Liz is a single mum with less of a budget.
Julia Confused
it's like they've rushed her through a charity shop and she's grabbed random stuff from the rails.

I think what people mean by cool is - I’ve been busy having kids for the past 2/3/4/5/6 years and I would vague like to look nice/presentable/not like have spend the past 4 years wiping poo/sick off myself!

Slayduggee · 31/12/2021 10:29

I don’t have a fucking clue what is in or what would suit my post partum body and I don’t have days to leisurely walk round the shops browsing

Skinny jeans are cheugy and I am quite sick of them on me, so I am enjoying the mom jean things. However at at thirty-nine I think even the way I breathe is cheugy...

Spaceman1 · 31/12/2021 11:16

The rich mums wear gym stuff for that 'I'm going to the gym because I don't have to work' look!

Flingingmelon · 31/12/2021 11:20

The annoying thing is that you can put ten mums in the same outfit and some look cool and some dont and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it.

I aim for clean Grin

hiptobeasquare · 31/12/2021 13:23

I'll be wearing this coat for the spring. I think it makes me look pretty cool. I wear this scarf when it's chilly as well.

I have the scarf in mustard and grey.

I think I look ace.

doorornottodoor · 31/12/2021 13:40

@hiptobeasquare nice! That’s a great site - love the do no wrong cardigans Grin

hiptobeasquare · 31/12/2021 14:03

@doorornottodoor Me too!

I am planning on knitting a cardie for the first time in the new year, so I can't justify buying one!
I knit my first scarf last year (see pic)which was a massive achievement.

SwitchedOnMum · 31/12/2021 17:43

What the heck are Veja trainers?

SallyWD · 31/12/2021 17:47

I never understand how you can define cool. When I was at school in the 90s there were so many different groups who all considered their style cool - the girls with permed hair, beige jackets and gold jewellery, the grungers, the rock kids, the kids in to dance music with their acid house t-shirts. Each group had it's own style which they thought was cool (and they thought everyone else was most uncool). It's the same with school mums - I have no idea who YOU would think is cool OP. I find the slightly bohemian women cool but you might not. You might find the mums in sportwear cool or the mums with expensive handbags. It's all so subjective.

BoopTheFloof · 31/12/2021 17:47

Whatever they want.

HerculesMulligann · 31/12/2021 17:51

I finally just googled Veja trainers, after seeing them mentioned on this thread and also on a few others. I was expecting something interesting, or at least distinctive. But they look like bog standard trainers to me, quite nondescript and slightly too chunky.

I’ll stick with my Converse. Obviously coolness and style is just not for me!

coffeetofunction · 31/12/2021 17:55

I would never say I was, I'm a total geek and I'm fine with that, however others perceive me to be cool... I often wear my DD15 clothes/shoes/accessories and she does mine. We often hit carboots and charity shop together. I definitely think my daughter is very cool and comfortable in her own skin, which I think makes her even cooler

IvorCutler · 31/12/2021 17:56

The remark about mums wearing gym gear to show they don’t have to work is weird. I don’t work and I feel like a loser. I like fashion and care about what I wear, so I’m probably looked down upon for that. One of my children has additional needs and I can’t work, despite having had a career prior to children.

The idea of people judging really is so shit. I notice the people who wear clothes I like and find cool/stylish, but I understand that everyone has
different taste and what makes someone look cool to me probably doesn’t appeal to others. The school run is just a sea of parents and I’m very unlikely to even notice an outfit unless it’s something I find special.

MarvellousMonsters · 31/12/2021 17:59

"I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear?"

Whatever the fuck we want.

And I mean that as a rule "cool" people are those who don't follow fashion and do their own thing.

doorornottodoor · 31/12/2021 18:00

@IvorCutler rest assured, no one worth knowing is judging you Flowers
