What do the cool mums wear?

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

Thanks for explaining @BalladOfBarryAndFreda

I think the word cool has been taken to mean the in crowd.

There are the in crowd who keep the out crowd at arms length.

Then there is the actually in person who keeps everyone at arms length because they face zero fucks.

@Foxglovesandlilacs86

I think the things I’ve heard tend to be worn by older/middle class women. I live in a nice village where there’s a fair bit of money about but still don’t see anyone wearing Veja trainers or cross body bags, all sounds a bit middle aged to me.

I don’t really know what you mean by cool? Do people use the word cool anymore? I think you either give off that vibe or you don’t, it’s not just about the clothes.

Ooh burn! Consider us older / middle class women who’d like to look nice told! We’re so obviously old and (incoming worst insult ever) middle class we shouldn’t even discuss this in the Style and Beauty forum on, er, mumsnet. I’m going to go and drop my Vejas at a charity shop outside the area while wearing my banned winter sunglasses. Grin

I'm not cool, I'm far from it but I do have a few nice coats and dresses/tops from my old professional life. I mix those up with jeans, trainers, boots, knitwear, polo's and plain tops. Most of my clothes are monochrome with the odd Berry, green and blues thrown in. This way I can get dressed in the dark and look coordinated so for practical rather than for cool purposes!

I'm a short arse so wear fitted clothes otherwise I'm swamped. I stick to classic cuts & avoid patterns as I can't afford to replaces trends. Patterns make me look mumsy so stick to plain outfits with neutral accessories. I buy from higher end high street in the sales & look for quality for economic reasons.

Twinkleylight · 30/12/2021 23:02

I just bought a pair of these in black which will go with most of my clothes & most importantly they're comfy.

Cool is really subjective, I hate Breton stripes on me and never have liked them but they suit others.
I am really liking the high waisted jeans wider leg or mom that are around at the moment as they suit my figure but others prefer skinny jeans and they suit them.
I know it's difficult at the moment but people watching helps me put outfits together.
I usually feel good in whatever I decide to wear on the rare times I do the school run wether I look cool is debatable and probably in the eye of the beholder.

Thickasmincepie · 30/12/2021 23:04

I'd never heard of Vejas before this thread.

What makes them cool? Genuine question.
Question

frenchfancy81 · 30/12/2021 23:07

Initially probably cause they were vegan/ethical & looked nice & the new buzzy brand.

I wear mine with jeans!
Twinkleylight · 30/12/2021 23:26

Do people still roll up jeans? Or do they buy ankle grazes to wear with boots?

bendmeoverbackwards · 30/12/2021 23:31

@TeachesOfPeaches

Julia and Meg have the coolest styles in Motherland. Amanda looks rich and Liz just looks normal.
I don’t get the Julia clothes love, I think she looks a bit odd tbh
waterlego · 30/12/2021 23:33

@gogohm

Back when I did the school run (9 years ago admittedly) we laughed at the gym gear try hard mums. We all had pt jobs so dropped kids at 8.45, worked until 3 then straight to pick up, we wore work clothes (depending on kind of job of course) - the gym gear mums were the ladies who lunch crowd who ran the pta.
Some of us wore gym gear on the school run because we work in a gym 😂

This is such a weird thread. Why do people bother reading a thread that is about S&B in order to sneer at people who are interested in S&B? Bizarre.

And my optician just told me that anyone who doesn't protect their eyes from the sun all year round is just asking for problems in the future, so the anti-sunglasses brigade can fuck off.

My well dressed friends are braving wide leg jeans, but also long pleated skirts with simple tops and trainers or boots. Anthropologie features fairly heavily, as does &other Stories. I still love Hush - so shoot me. But I am not cool, more a follower than a leader and happy to be so.

I have Vejas which have finally become incredibly comfortable, but it took a while.

My teenage dd told me recently that my "'fit looked leng". Which I think means good so I'll take that. Grin

MiddleParking · 30/12/2021 23:54

Oh god, the apprentice in the hairdressers complimented my ‘fit’ a few weeks ago and I replied “sorry?” Grin I eventually thanked her when I worked out what she’d said. And it was a really nice, flattering, definitely extremely uncool outfit!

AmIoldbutdontrealiseit · 30/12/2021 23:57

@CinnamonJellyBeans Soooo Sahm mums can’t be cool, only working mums?

AstroBunny · 31/12/2021 00:00

@musicviking1

I couldn't give two fucks quite frankly.
You're hard Grin
antisocialsocialclub · 31/12/2021 00:26

You wear sunglasses? In December?

I do, winter sunshine is a bugger for my sun averse eyes 😎

antisocialsocialclub · 31/12/2021 00:36

I find it interesting that skinny jeans are a no but leather look leggings are stylish. So it’s not the cut of the trousers but the material? 😂 I’m so clueless.

PegasusReturns · 31/12/2021 00:44

Leather leggings aren’t currently fashionable. Wide leg culottes and joggers are the leather style of choice.

They can still be cool and/or stylish but they’re not current

ToooOldForThis · 31/12/2021 02:09

I wear sunglasses when it's sunny! The sun is v low here in winter, you really need them for driving actually.

@Twinkleylight I was wondering re rolling up too...
