What do the cool mums wear?

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

I love this thread. Ignoring the sneering posts, what’s cool/fashionable/stylish is so much fun to read and debate. Stylish/cool are definitely a Venn diagram, with some overlap. You can be stylish/chic/desirable without being cool.

foxlover47 · 30/12/2021 18:57

@AuntieDolly definitely Liz 🤣🤣🤣🤣 though Meg is my fave mum
@Benjispruce5 this a flannel. What are you imaging??
Probably a face cloth, which is what a ‘flannel’ is in the UK. ‘Flannel’ as a term for checked shirt is very US (which the poster may very well be)

I agree, and you can definitely be cool without being stylish.

I love all the different opinions and ideas too. Even if I woken tweet something myself doesn't mean I don't think it looks good/stylish on others. It's so individual and you can pick and choose parts. The only thing I really dislike is huge brand names scrawled across things.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 30/12/2021 19:38

Hmm. I am definitely not "stylish" (I'm wearing 90s cut jeans in summer but don't feel 100% right in them) but I always feel quite cool in big chunky ankle boots, black skinnies, black polo neck and my unisex Diesel military parka. I wear that to work though.

I probably don't look quite as cool at the park in my Joules bee wellies Grin

Never heard of anything so silly. What is a cool Mum supposed to be. The majority of women I have seen outside the school gates in my village, are mostly overweight, wearing jeans with rips in them, and baggy jumpers or padded jackets of some kind, and lots of them wear flip flops, even when they drive to the school. Lots of them have big fancy houses in the village, and have these big expensive cars, but some look like they have just got out of bed. and they all have phones in the hand at all times. this must be my village cool mums look I guess.

I think I’ve mainly worn my ‘mom’ jeans, new balance trainers, a hoodie and my huge long puffa type coat (when it’s cold) this year. I’ve also got some dungerees which I wear in the summer and the dresses with trainers look, which I love.

Shopgirl1 · 30/12/2021 19:50

I don’t think there is a cool school run look, people just wear what they normally wear for their day. I wear a lot of jeans - skinny or wider leg, trainers or boots, a sweater and jacket or coat. Not sure if I look cool, but I know I look ok as my clothes suit me.

DrJakes · 30/12/2021 20:19

@CallMeK

The private school mum uniform is Sweaty Betty clothes, Gucci trainers, Gucci disco bag or Mulberry bag, Ray Ban aviator sunglasses, Canada Goose parka, Botox, Invisalign and sometimes micro bladed eyebrows (only the younger ones do the eyebrows and they are very well done/not obvious). Driving LR Discovery or Defender.
Doesn't sound very cool?
onedayoranother · 30/12/2021 20:22

I don't know anyone who cares about brands, but the mums that look pulled together and 'cool' just probably always did. And they wear classic blue jeans and the like - not quick fashion. And bring slim and fit is part of it, it's hard not to look frumpy carry an extra two or three stones. Also well groomed.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 30/12/2021 20:37

Lol at invisalign! I've had that 😃

I don't disagree but I also think this highlights the difference between 'cool' and 'stylish'. I think the look you're describing is the latter whereas you can look 'cool' regardless of your body shape. Some of the coolest dressers I know are short or overweight or whatever but that doesn't impact them being able to look cool.
mynameiscalypso · 30/12/2021 20:39

Actually stylish is the wrong word as well but I can't think of a better one at the moment!

foxlover47 · 30/12/2021 20:51

I don't think I've ever looked like a cool mum
Style wise , even now I usually am in hunter wellies , skinny jeans / workout leggings am a teddy coat
Trainers I wear are either converse or Nike , or I like chunky boots but thinking
About it I think I wear the wellies most due to regular dog walks and living semi rural
So a lot of mud everywhere

Plumedenom · 30/12/2021 20:52

She wasn't a mum, she was an architect visiting from Milan, but she had a very very fashionable but eminently school run friendly outfit. They were slightly structured cropped cargo pants with elastic at the bottom and those fairly high black ankle boots with a bomber jacket. She looked urban and cool and I had a big fashion crush. Helped that she was about six foot.

JennyForeigner · 30/12/2021 21:04

I wear my Smash the Patriarchy t-shirt. Seems to go down well.

CherryPieface · 30/12/2021 21:29

Sunglasses - I actually have sun damage in one of my eyes, even though I grew up in the north east of Scotland. I will always wear sunglasses in winter and encourage everyone else to do the same. But I also love wearing them as I think they look great at any time of the year!

I would look like a hefty lumberjack in this.

Sounds like you must live somewhere terribly dull and -urghh- suburban. My sympathies See how easy passive aggressive condescension is

Where I live the cool mums tend to be off to do something pretty cool and are dressed accordingly.

DelphiniumBlue · 30/12/2021 21:52

@gogohm

Back when I did the school run (9 years ago admittedly) we laughed at the gym gear try hard mums. We all had pt jobs so dropped kids at 8.45, worked until 3 then straight to pick up, we wore work clothes (depending on kind of job of course) - the gym gear mums were the ladies who lunch crowd who ran the pta.
Interesting, it's been a long time since I did the school run, but the PTA at our school were all working parents. At my current school, ( expensive London suburb) the mums seem to wear mid/light wash jeans and a longish coat, either puffer or teddy style, with white trainers or flat boots. Most don't seem to wear make-up. Hard to say if that is cool or not, though!
widestripe · 30/12/2021 21:54

I would define stylish (over cool) as not giving the tiniest shit what anyone else was wearing and being individual.

riotlady · 30/12/2021 22:09

I would agree with this. Beth Ditto, for example, is incredibly cool and not at all slim and probably not “stylish” in the traditonal sense

batmanladybird · 30/12/2021 22:21

Where is the mum boot of trainer thread?

MyDcAreMarvel · 30/12/2021 22:35

@LuluBlakey1this is more the look I meant not lumberjack Grin
