What do the cool mums wear?

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

@PegasusReturns

If you want to be actually cool as opposed to school mum cool (and I have an 18 yr old model DD so speak with some albeit vicarious authority here)

Then it’s all about bias cut satin dresses over cropped roll necks; lace bustiers with low rise jeans and teeny tiny dresses with chunky boots and cropped chunky cardigans.

Think Paris Hilton late 90’s. For those of us who were ourselves teens in the 90s this is obviously a bridge too far Grin

Brilliant! That look is probably too outre for most! Grin

@NotQuiteUsual

I am a cool mum according to my friends children. I wear 'quirky' charity shop clothes, at least one bold block colour per outfit, Unicorn hair, baggy boy cut shirts with rolled up sleeves, paired with mini skirts and thick tights, flat walking boots, costume jewelry. I aim to give off an artsy and effortless vibe, although I spend a lot of time effort in picking clothes that work for me.

I always wear baggy clothes on one half of me and flattering on the other. So if my trousers are loose or whatever, my top is well fitted and my sleeves tighter. Accessories and distinct clothing items that you absolutely love are key. That way you feel good about what you wear and it radiates off you.

But this kind of thing makes you cool with kids not other adults so it depends who's approval is more important to you Grin

What is unicorn hair, please? Is that the big ponytail at the front thing?
Maireas · 30/12/2021 16:26

@DarlingHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Veja, Mint Velvet, not Joules, Zara, Cos.

Though I agree with pp cool is in how you carry it off, never really what you wear. You can wear Veja and look frumpy and MS& trainers but looks quite stylish. I'm afraid the cool factors is derived from personality it is never about the actual clothes but your spirit and attitude.

Very true. Also, my local Zara is awful, looks like a jumble sale.

@Maireas I think it’s rainbow dyed hair. I wish it was a ponytail at the front though 😂😂

Oh, that's a shame. I was hoping for something a bit more radical!

This is what a cool mum looks like.....not sure why you are getting such weird responses here, if you are into style you like looking at pictures of stylish and yes even cool people, I love people watching, it reminds me to try that jumper I never wear with those jeans I just bought, or that I have those trainers from the last time around, must dig them out so this thread is just an extension of that. I'm still not clear on the skinny jeans, comrades. The OP and others on here wear them, other threads indicate they're passé... thoughts?

I think it appeared in active threads so all the AIBU regulars piled on with their trademark put downs and sarcasm

I don't understand the sunglasses thing either! I already carry a pair - theyre for light not heat!

That seems harsh.

@CallMeK guilty as charged Grin

LondonQueen · 30/12/2021 16:36

The coolest looking mum on my school run dresses like a rock chick, she is very effortlessly cool regardless of what she is wearing though!

Legoninjago1 · 30/12/2021 16:37

*always

Can you think of another reason for such an unusual response for this particular topic board?

PegasusReturns · 30/12/2021 16:42

I wore satin nighties outdoors in a Courtney Love stylee in the 90’s. I would look a state doing it now. Not cool at all

Mark my words this look will be thoroughly incorporated into mint velvet and hush by the beginning of 2023.

WhatAHexIGotInto · 30/12/2021 16:43

Cool is subjective. What one may think is cool someone else may think is ridiculous. That's why we're not all walking about in the same clothes. 🤷

Ooh thanks for the link. Love the inspiration and that blue look is just 👌🏻
LuluBlakey1 · 30/12/2021 16:46

I'm not cool- I don't know what cool is. I wear dark brown knee length button boots, dark brown opaque tights, a brown and beige velvet not too short mini-skirt and a padded knee length navy blue coat. Or blue skinny jeans, old fila trainers (had them since 1996), a blue cotton shirt and a dusty pink knee length padded coat. Most days it's a version of one of these two outfits with a cross body chunky blue bag.

GreyTS · 30/12/2021 16:47

@mynameiscalypso awesome isn't she? I love a bit of fashion inspiration, think that's all the op was asking for

PegasusReturns · 30/12/2021 16:49

That seems harsh

Not really. S&B threads really manage to
provoke a level of sneering condescension combined with envy that isn’t seen elsewhere on the boards.

I’m going to petition MN towers to put “if you’d rather buy a bench then this isn’t for you” in the S&B header Grin

I think I’m being a bit thick, I can’t see any link. Do I need to be using the app?
LowlandLucky · 30/12/2021 16:50

I don't suppose my wellies, thermal leggings, old jumper and ancient wax jacket and knitted hat are cool. TBF i know i look look like a bag lady but there is not point in wearing white trainer when the will end up covered in mud, manure, wet sand or a mix of all 3.

liveforsummer · 30/12/2021 16:52

@PegasusReturns yes! There was a thread just the other day where a mum was complaining about her 18 year old dd wearing just that (think it was a cami slip dress of underwear persuasion). She was quickly reminded by us early 90's teens that we wore exactly the same.

hashbrownsandwich · 30/12/2021 16:52

Shameless place mark.
