You know when people say skinny jeans are dated?

Only personal thoughts, not judgemental, just to make it clear!

Well I kind of think ALL jeans could be called dated. I don't really like denim stuff as it is, but whilst I agree that the ubiquitousness of skinnies is over, I still don't think they are any more dated than wideleg, boot, flare, mum jeans or whatever jeans in general.

The entire denim thing seems overdone now, to me. Truly overdone and boring. I am glad there are so many more clothing options out there currently, it was difficult to find anything that wasn't jeans focused for nearly two decades.

I get that they are practical, but people saying they're the only thing that works in winter....well i strongly disagree. The coat and boots matter most, no matter what goes under them. I used to do the denim in winter thing and always got wet, heavy and cold. Even tights and a winter midi skirt dry out quicker, and are easily covered by my coats.
I used to get numb cold legs wearing skinnies shoved into dubarry boots, or else flapping heavy wet boatsails with wider leg styles. Piss wet through and then the agony of peeling them off.
I get that they are easy, and can accept other people love the damn things, but i was so sick of them dominating the shops and coat/jumper/boots styles for so long.

And yes i know this is definitely a denim era (historically speaking) so i need to shut up Grin

It's just one person's opinion i know. I'm possibly the only one !
I see a lot of women desperately trying to find the right jeans and a lot of angst about them, and sometimes i just wonder why they dont just bin them and move on to something else entirely.

I have really long legs, so I've stuck with skinny jeans as all other styles look naff on me.

I just wouldn't know where to start if I ditched wearing skinnies.

whatisthisinhere · 05/12/2021 18:22

I can't stand jeans. It's an age thing I think

Glassofshloer · 05/12/2021 18:22

Because skirts are cold & impractical, and leggings/joggers can easily look slobby. What’s the alternative?

whatisthisinhere · 05/12/2021 18:23

By that I mean ve got to an age where I can't tolerate anything that presents problems, and for me it's denim.

CambsAlways · 05/12/2021 18:23

I love my skinny jeans skinny jegs, and couldn’t give a stuff wether they are out of date, or high fashion, but I’m not a fan of denim dresses bags jackets skirts,

whatisthisinhere · 05/12/2021 18:24

I find dresses and tights a lot more practical, but I suppose it's an individual thing really. I spend most time in workout gear

nothingbutsnow · 05/12/2021 18:25

Dated is a shitty word i agree, cant think of a better one - but I use it in reaction to people saying it about skinnies. Jeans are just jeans to me, so they are either all dated or none.

I never get cold in my skirts though, have very warm coats with good coverage and good woollie things!

coronafiona · 05/12/2021 18:26

@nothingbutsnow what do you wear instead?

lazylinguist · 05/12/2021 18:26

Well they're just trousers really, aren't they? I almost don't see how they can be dated en masse, considering the number of styles and colours they come in. Also surely dated means no longer fashionable. Are you claiming jeans are no longer fashionable...? Because I don't think the evidence really backs that up!

nothingbutsnow · 05/12/2021 18:27

True, but i do come across a lot of women struggling with jeans and i want to tell them to liberate themselves from the tyranny of denim Grin

Still, if they are so "easy" as people say, then finding the right pair and fit should be, too.

DillDanding · 05/12/2021 18:28

I can’t help but think I’d look daft in wide legged or bootcut jeans. I still wear skinnies as I love them.

nothingbutsnow · 05/12/2021 18:28
@nothingbutsnow what do you wear instead?
everything else! Surely that would be obvious, it isnt jeans or bust.

OP posts:
woodhill · 05/12/2021 18:28

I don't care, we've got an environmental crisis so I will wear them as they are not worn out. It's so cold anyway, I have a coat on over them

MissBPotter · 05/12/2021 18:32

@coronafiona I was going to ask the same thing! I’m quite short with fairly chunky thighs so have always thought dresses suited me better, but I feel like they are cold in winter and look more dressed up… I nearly always want to look casual for school run, shops, weekends etc.

Aderyn21 · 05/12/2021 18:37

Everything is horrible in the rain. Mostly because coats in the UK are rarely long enough/waterproof to stop you getting soaked. Wet legs are the worst.
I like skinny jeans. I can still feel the wet hens of my boot cuts as they dragged along the floor in the 90s. Not quite ready for that again.

nothingbutsnow · 05/12/2021 18:37

So could it be that we associate jeans with casual?

I never 'dress up' if i wear skirts/dresses, theyre always casual. I wonder if it is more to do with what we are used to?

Ah this is true enough, what i hate most is never knowing if or when it will chuck down. Brolly or no brolly? Hood or hat? It's a pain i the arse isnt it?

I like wet hens though Grin

I don't know. I think denim in general is less dated than "a winter midi with tights".

tiktokniknok · 05/12/2021 18:46

Well I'm overjoyed mom jeans and looser fits are in. I'm a size 8 but skinnies were just never flattering on me.

woodhill · 05/12/2021 19:35

What else would you wear it with though?
Fireblanket · 05/12/2021 19:50

In terms of warmth I've always felt that thick tights and a long skirt are far warmer than jeans. it's a layer thing.
Mind you, I have no fashion sense whatsoever (nor do I care Grin)

woodhill · 05/12/2021 19:53

It's just a con

LookdeepintotheParka · 05/12/2021 20:20

Me too @tiktokniknok - I like jeans and find them really comfy but skinnies always looked awful on me.

I think it's just knowing and sticking to what suits your shape. Being a petite pear shape, skinnies were just not flattering on me. For the same reason, leggings, jeggings etc look awful so I like straight cut, bootcut, mom, dad & whatever else they're called Grin I hate tights, have terrible varicose veins and never wear a skirt or a dress!

MaryLennoxsScowl · 05/12/2021 20:47

Are you in a warm country and/or south England, OP? I’m in Scotland. There is no way a thin scrim of Lycra is keeping my legs warm under a skirt, unless you’re advocating going back to the days of layering flannel petticoats under a full-length wool skirt. I don’t wear leggings out and about for the same reason; they’re fucking freezing. Thick fleecy joggers are good, but hardly either stylish or suitable for the office (sadly), and wool-blend formal trousers are usually much less comfortable than jeans, as well as less robust and easy to wash. I’ll grant you that wet denim is a nightmare and tights dry faster, but in a downpour the only useful thing is a long raincoat, umbrella and wellies, really. I think most people also know perfectly well they have other options and aren’t just reaching for jeans because nobody has suggested just wearing a dress instead!

badg3r · 05/12/2021 20:51

I spend most of the winter in waterproof trousers so it really doesn't matter what is underneath 😂 the ability to sit down anywhere is very liberating!
