You know when people say skinny jeans are dated?

Only personal thoughts, not judgemental, just to make it clear!

Well I kind of think ALL jeans could be called dated. I don't really like denim stuff as it is, but whilst I agree that the ubiquitousness of skinnies is over, I still don't think they are any more dated than wideleg, boot, flare, mum jeans or whatever jeans in general.

The entire denim thing seems overdone now, to me. Truly overdone and boring. I am glad there are so many more clothing options out there currently, it was difficult to find anything that wasn't jeans focused for nearly two decades.

I get that they are practical, but people saying they're the only thing that works in winter....well i strongly disagree. The coat and boots matter most, no matter what goes under them. I used to do the denim in winter thing and always got wet, heavy and cold. Even tights and a winter midi skirt dry out quicker, and are easily covered by my coats.
I used to get numb cold legs wearing skinnies shoved into dubarry boots, or else flapping heavy wet boatsails with wider leg styles. Piss wet through and then the agony of peeling them off.
I get that they are easy, and can accept other people love the damn things, but i was so sick of them dominating the shops and coat/jumper/boots styles for so long.

And yes i know this is definitely a denim era (historically speaking) so i need to shut up Grin

It's just one person's opinion i know. I'm possibly the only one !
I see a lot of women desperately trying to find the right jeans and a lot of angst about them, and sometimes i just wonder why they dont just bin them and move on to something else entirely.

A few years ago on here it was all Seven For All Mankind, Paper, Denim and Cloth (or whatever they were called) and the rest of that wave of expensive denim. Nowadays most S&B posters are paying much much less for their jeans. High street shops, even supermarkets, offer a pretty good range of options these days and I think jeans are less of an ‘it’ item that they were?
Ha! I'd forgotten some of those names - are any of them still going? These days the only high end jeans labels I regularly hear about are Hiut and Black Horse Atelier, and they have a completely different identity. Maybe this is the next reinvention? Sustainability feels quite a stretch given denim's eco credentials but no more audacious than those first designer jeans were. I do think jeans have a knack of hooking into the zeitgeist: rock n' roll / designer wear / investment dressing and now jeans as slow fashion??

I don't get the denim love.
At work, some colleagues think they've received manna from heaven when told it's a "Dress Casual Day" and they can wear jeans. 🙄
I don't think they are very flattering unless you are long limbed and skinny.
There's no heat in them in winter.
As an apple shape when I wear jeans I wear skinnies. And cover my tum.

You want unisex 501s if pockets are important to you - honestly they're a complete revelation. As the material has no elastic content, filling the pockets doesn't caue sagging or pulling the jeans down whatsoever, and the four proper pockets are all capricious - the front ones are like Mary Poppins' carpet bag! They're the only thing I wear to work now and the number of keys I carry with me is considerable, and fat bunches of keys, my mobile, my work mobile, tissues and various other bits and pieces all fit in my pockets.

The only thing with better pockets is my snowboarding coat...

I live mostly in trousers in some form or another (I'm so unfashionable that I still sometimes wear cargo pants like All Saints) because I just find skirts feel either too restrictive if fitted or too flimsy if more flared. I wear loads of jeans, bootcut or straight in summer, skinny with boots in winter.

I'm not sure jeans will ever completely go out of fashion because the range of styles and colours is huge now. BUT I am so glad that high rise seem to be back in fashion, low rise are a pain in the arse, I hope they stay out of fashion indefinitely.

MidnightMeltdown · 07/12/2021 13:58

What I've realised, particularly since lockdown and spending more time at home, is that jeans are probably one of the most uncomfortable types of trousers to wear. Particularly tight fitting ones.

I sometimes wear them if I'm going out and can't find anything else to wear, but they come off as soon as I get home.

I feel frumpy wearing jeans in the summer, but don't mind so much during other seasons. However, they also aren't warm to wear in winter like leggings etc can be.

I used to wear jeans a lot, but these days I just don't like them so much anymore. The only reason that I still buy and wear them occasionally is that they are hard wearing compared to other trousers.

And I’m hoping they come back in soon. True low rise are very hard to find at the moment.

I genuinely don't know what i'd wear outside of work if I didn't have jeans Confused I'm 5ft 2 and have yet to find a flattering skirt and boot combo that would stop me freezing in the winter. Plenty of frumpy looking options that made me look shorter and wider but nothing flattering.

SunnySideDownBriefly · 07/12/2021 15:59

I think you are soooo right @nothingbutsnow

Denim is thick and uncomfortable. It's hardly ever flattering on people because if it fits well in one area then it's unlikely to fit well in other areas. It gets washed out at the seams and it's just dull, dull, dull. Although I do love brightly coloured stretchy jeans for different occasions and black jeans have been a fall back for me for some time. It's v unimaginative thought.

I've embraced wearing trousers of different materials this weekend and haven't felt so comfortable, while being fairly effortlessly dressed up, in ages.

If you need warmth and comfort for outside then I recommend thermal fleece tights under some looser trousers.

WeirdArchitecture · 07/12/2021 15:59

I think what bugs me about denim in general is that it is (usually) a very bland, very boring.... blue. I know we can choose black, dark indigo etc, but it is still 'denim blue' to me. And the stiffness, whatever the cut, bothers me, especially thick button and fly fastenings at my midriff. Likewise I don't like denim skirts for similar reasons.

On the plus side, for those who like them, they are certainly perennial, easy to source and go with many other things. However, in relation to footwear (especially boots) i think skinnies are more accommodating. I am not fond of the look of any shoe or boot (or trainer) with loose fit jeans.

Agree that i have never found them warm. But then just because i don't like them on myself doesn't mean other people don't look great in them.

For those who wear them even though they would prefer an alternative - it takes practice and experimentation after years of only wearing jeans. It took me a while to find my style with skirts/dresses/other trousers. What initially seems complicated does become simple and like second nature after a little while.

The thing with tights is finding very good fabrics. I like Falke merino, COS ribbed, and cotton from M&S. I have never had issues with them falling down of feeling uncomfortable. It might depend on bodyshape and leg length though. They keep me VERY warm in cold weather and dry out in mins.
In summer i wear midi lengths with bare legs.

CallmeBadJanet · 07/12/2021 18:00

@nothingbutsnow Really? I think women should just wear whatever the fuck they want.

Swirlywoo · 07/12/2021 18:24

Missing the point, but I used to wear tights under my jeans as a teenager.

I like jeans, especially with a nice knit, but I am usually ten years behind what is fashionable.

Interesting about the history and the fashion for them starting in the 70s. My 60s teen DM has never worn them and my Gran was in midi skirts, nylons and low heels until the day she died.

bellocchild · 07/12/2021 19:33

As far as fashion goes, surely most people just settle for what fits them best? For me, it's somewhere between skinny and straight. I've even had the cleaners narrow straight ones a bit!

nordica · 07/12/2021 20:01

I find the waistband in jeans really uncomfortable these days - the size is fine, it's just the thick layers of fabric and stitching, and the metal button that hurt, especially when sitting down all day for work. I wear dresses and skirts most of the time, or dungarees or sometimes softer cotton or jersey trousers.

That said, when I wear jeans it's still skinnies for me - as I'm short (and a bit fat) they are much more flattering than wider leg jeans.
