You know when people say skinny jeans are dated?

Only personal thoughts, not judgemental, just to make it clear!

Well I kind of think ALL jeans could be called dated. I don't really like denim stuff as it is, but whilst I agree that the ubiquitousness of skinnies is over, I still don't think they are any more dated than wideleg, boot, flare, mum jeans or whatever jeans in general.

The entire denim thing seems overdone now, to me. Truly overdone and boring. I am glad there are so many more clothing options out there currently, it was difficult to find anything that wasn't jeans focused for nearly two decades.

I get that they are practical, but people saying they're the only thing that works in winter....well i strongly disagree. The coat and boots matter most, no matter what goes under them. I used to do the denim in winter thing and always got wet, heavy and cold. Even tights and a winter midi skirt dry out quicker, and are easily covered by my coats.
I used to get numb cold legs wearing skinnies shoved into dubarry boots, or else flapping heavy wet boatsails with wider leg styles. Piss wet through and then the agony of peeling them off.
I get that they are easy, and can accept other people love the damn things, but i was so sick of them dominating the shops and coat/jumper/boots styles for so long.

And yes i know this is definitely a denim era (historically speaking) so i need to shut up Grin

It's just one person's opinion i know. I'm possibly the only one !
I see a lot of women desperately trying to find the right jeans and a lot of angst about them, and sometimes i just wonder why they dont just bin them and move on to something else entirely.

I haven't read the whole thread yet (will go back and read).

I also wear skirts and dresses in the main, OP.
Though I own walking trousers, yoga and gym leggings. I bought a pair of slim straight leg jeans (mentioned on here) a while ago but I still haven't worn them! I love the look of the parallel/flare and 'mum' jeans but I don't think they'd suit me. I've actually been tempted to buy some 'formal' trousers, inspired by all the 'Shiv Roy' fashion blogging I've read about recently.

I agree they don't necessarily look dressed up and I have lots of casual dresses and skirts, though I probably don't ever look super-casual in them. And they can be warm; I also have knitted skirts and dresses, and underslip dresses (rarely use). I'll also wear socks under knee length boots, and over tights if it's extremely cold.

MoirasWigStand · 06/12/2021 09:55

I don’t suit skinny jeans really (pear shaped). But I’ve never worked out how to wear any other jeans with my doc marten boots (or any other boots really). In summer I wear converse/trainers with straight leg.

I suit skirts and dresses more but as someone said I always feel more dressed up. And get annoyed by the lack of pockets

DedalusBloom · 06/12/2021 10:20

I don't think I've ever seen a thread in style and beauty which could so aptly be summed up by the phrase " You do you, Boo."

dropitlikeitsloth · 06/12/2021 10:43

@coogee

I’m not from the south of England.
You definitely never need to get on public transport then, bare legs in Winter unless you’re house>car>office/indoor place is just unthinkable here 🥶😊
dropitlikeitsloth · 06/12/2021 10:48

For me… Mum/wide leg jeans are Summer jeans, skinny jeans are Winter jeans. I love wide leg/mum jeans with flip flops or trainers when it’s warmer and skinny jeans or leggings tucked away in boots for colder weather 😊

Someone said wide legs are better for Winter as you can get warm socks under them. I wear tights and knee high socks (sometimes two pairs of ankle socks) under skinnies and you’d never know. Always nice and cosy then and no wet loose denim flapping around 👍🏻

That's an interesting analogy with hats Chief. Jeans have reinvented themselves before mind you. When they started losing their rebel status in the 70s they needed a new direction and they found one - the first time I heard about Gloria Vanderbilt and designer jeans I thought it was a joke and that everyone else would laugh too, but I was totally wrong. Now I think they might be at another crossroads and I'm curious to see what happens next.

TuftyMarmoset · 06/12/2021 11:28

@ChiefInspectorParker I wish hats would come back in fashion!

They don't need to be in fashion. Just wear them if you like them. I've been wearing felt hats from shops like Fabhatrix since I discovered it , at least 25 years ago.

I've now moved to Jean Jeggins, so not really jeans but in a stretchy 'Jean like' look. But it's a comfort thing for me now, I'm almost 50, and cba not to wear what's not comfy

goose1964 · 06/12/2021 11:59

I can't remember the last time I wore jeans, skinny or otherwise. I suspect it's over 30 years ago as I never could get ones to fit. I've worn jersey trousers for so long I hate the feel of rigid fabric against my legs.

DD and DSs live in their means and are stumped as to why I hate the feel of jeans

WeirdArchitecture · 06/12/2021 12:42

People really do seem to get angry over the skirts of jeans debate. Like really fucking weird to be honest.

It isn't a life goal for most people to live somewhere so cold they get to boast about living in 20 layers of waterproofs, you see....no one really cares.
Whenever this kind of thread pops up there's a lot of spit and feathers between A) wearing tights, and B) competing for living in the COLDEST PLACE ON EARTH.COM!!!

I wear tights, they stay up, are comfy, i am slim and have no issues being cold or needing 50 pairs of knickers over the top. We are all different.
I wonder why people get so angry about skirts and dresses? If they dont work for you, easy peasy, dont wear em!
Some people just prefer trousers or jeans, no big deal.
How insecure are we if we have to have a MN cat fight over this every few weeks? It seems to bring out some really weird, playground nastiness. I suppose S&B can be a pretty emotive topic, eh?

WeirdArchitecture · 06/12/2021 12:46

Oh and for me, i quit wearing jeans, especially skinny a few years ago because i wanted comfort. I have IBS and it can really exaggerate the tenderness during flare ups.

I found skirts and dresses instantly more comfy, it was a learning curve working out how to make them casual and work with other stuff, but once done, it's just perfect for me. With soft merino tights in winter, and longer frocks in summer with sandals or trainers. Nothing wrong with going for comfort!

I think we are just so very used to denim that it registers unconsciously as 'easy'. Leggings too, now, and a lot of casual dresses are becoming so too.

I think it's because the people who wear skirts or dresses are often treated by the jeans wearers as some sort of weirdo 1950s Stepford wives throwback rather than just people who don't like jeans.

It's even worse on FWR boards where the non jeans wearers are some sort of weirdo 1950s Stepford wives throwback with the added crime of "performing feminity"

I'm exaggerating a bit.

Caspianberg · 06/12/2021 13:24

I wear skinny jeans a lot. But I don’t find them warm in winter.
I’m in the alps, it’s cold.
Winter I wear tights, wool thick dress or skirt and sheepskin lined tall boots.
Or thermals and lined trousers.

Skinnies are spring and autumn wear. Would boil in summer in them.

I’m probably not very fashionable though

CrispAndFrosty · 06/12/2021 13:30

I get you, OP. There's a place for thick, stretchy-ish trousers, but it doesn't have to be jeans. I've pretty much given them up, as I felt dull and slobby in them. Never wore blue ones anyway, as they feel too casual and dreary to me. Turns out there's a whole world of trousers out there. In my mind it was either jeans or some sort of polyester office trouser, therefore it had to be jeans. I was wrong.

OatALot · 06/12/2021 13:35

I wear jeans of various styles and jumper dresses with thermal tights. I'd love thermal skinny jeans. Do they do them?

WeirdArchitecture · 06/12/2021 13:44

When i think of dresses/skirts i see these photos.

We are all different so many won't like them, and that's ok!

But it is not about shivering and wearing ballroom dresses in the rain Grin
I personally prefer the freedom of movement in skirts, I love combining textures especially in winter. It's not either-or though: If i go hiking i wear dedicated hiking clothes. If i walked a dog i would wear leggings and my long puffer.

But we dont have to put one down for the sake of the other. Some people just prefer their jeans, no matter what cut or style, and I prefer my skirts!

I also like this from superdry - 100% merino, but with tights or whatever you prefer. Can chuck anything over it, decent scarf, hat, off we go!
No idea why they pose the models with bare legs Confused

Bare legs is normal to me.

Mind you, I would probably look like a sack of potatoes in that dress unless I wore it with a belt.

Floisme · 06/12/2021 15:43

People really do seem to get angry over the skirts of jeans debate.
I think any discussion about whether something is in fashion / going out of fashion is likely to get heated on here. I kind of get why: if the way we dress is a form of self expression then I guess any suggestion that our preferred style might be falling out of favour can hit a nerve sometimes. It throws up all kinds of questions: 'What do I do if I can't buy them any more? 'What could I wear instead?' 'Will I need different tops and shoes too and what about my coat?' And then there's the big one: 'Do I care about being in fashion more than I like to admit?'

But I don't think it's a new thing. Anyone remember the leggings-and-tunic threads? This is pretty mild really Grin

I do like jeans, but since I got an ink stain on my favourites a while ago I've not worn any. I've tried on a few pairs hoping to find the perfect fit but it's not happened yet!

I usually wear skirts or dresses with tights and platform docs. I'm partial to a pleather skirt and find they keep me cosy.

Today I had on a pleather pencil long midi skirt with a split up the front, tights, cream woolly jumper, docs and oversized coat.

I was out for a meal last night and wore the same skirt with a deep v long sleeve bodysuit, black leather boots with a leopard print high heel and patterned tights.
To me; skirts are as easy to dress up or down as jeans are

hygtt · 06/12/2021 17:18

As a taller person (5ft 10) I admit I like the practicality jeans bring me. No worries about exposing my bum when I bend over. I don't like long dresses as much as they seem to make me look longer.
