You know when people say skinny jeans are dated?

Only personal thoughts, not judgemental, just to make it clear!

Well I kind of think ALL jeans could be called dated. I don't really like denim stuff as it is, but whilst I agree that the ubiquitousness of skinnies is over, I still don't think they are any more dated than wideleg, boot, flare, mum jeans or whatever jeans in general.

The entire denim thing seems overdone now, to me. Truly overdone and boring. I am glad there are so many more clothing options out there currently, it was difficult to find anything that wasn't jeans focused for nearly two decades.

I get that they are practical, but people saying they're the only thing that works in winter....well i strongly disagree. The coat and boots matter most, no matter what goes under them. I used to do the denim in winter thing and always got wet, heavy and cold. Even tights and a winter midi skirt dry out quicker, and are easily covered by my coats.
I used to get numb cold legs wearing skinnies shoved into dubarry boots, or else flapping heavy wet boatsails with wider leg styles. Piss wet through and then the agony of peeling them off.
I get that they are easy, and can accept other people love the damn things, but i was so sick of them dominating the shops and coat/jumper/boots styles for so long.

And yes i know this is definitely a denim era (historically speaking) so i need to shut up Grin

It's just one person's opinion i know. I'm possibly the only one !
I see a lot of women desperately trying to find the right jeans and a lot of angst about them, and sometimes i just wonder why they dont just bin them and move on to something else entirely.

ChiefInspectorParker hats were part of the convention that heads needed to be covered to be responsible - the analogy only works if you think trousers will go out of fashion and it'll be respectable to walk around in our underwear (on the lower half of our bodies).

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 06/12/2021 18:15

respectable not responsible!

WeirdArchitecture · 06/12/2021 18:42

@Floisme

People really do seem to get angry over the skirts of jeans debate. I think any discussion about whether something is in fashion / going out of fashion is likely to get heated on here. I kind of get why: if the way we dress is a form of self expression then I guess any suggestion that our preferred style might be falling out of favour can hit a nerve sometimes. It throws up all kinds of questions: 'What do I do if I can't buy them any more? 'What could I wear instead?' 'Will I need different tops and shoes too and what about my coat?' And then there's the big one: 'Do I care about being in fashion more than I like to admit?'

But I don't think it's a new thing. Anyone remember the leggings-and-tunic threads? This is pretty mild really Grin

Oh yes those threads were heated. Some comments do get a bit unpleasant though.

I do find it sad when someone obviously doesn't like a new style but throws all of their existing stuff out anyway for fear of looking dated. Many women wore skinnies even though they were uncomfortable in them or hated them, and this is evidenced by how many people are now cheering their demise. Why was everyone wearing stuff they didn't like anyway? Possibly because all the shops were full of them and most accessories favoured them. I never liked them and found it very hard to source longer skirts back then. It can't be a good feeling.

We do tend to draw a line somewhere though. I would occasionally love to dress in 18th century stuff but I have to stop myself...and it isn't easily available, so, yeh Grin

I'm happy to hold up my hands. I didn't hate them but I was never a big fan and I wore them, partly because I really liked some of the accessories - the boyfriend cardigans and slouchy knitwear, the OTT necklaces etc, but also because they've arguably been the dominant trend of the last couple of decades and because I like fashion. I guess it's not the done thing to say so on here - we're all supposed to be above it. But I enjoy it and I enjoy talking about it.

It doesn't mean I follow every trend e.g. I don't own a single pair of trainers or a floaty dress and I've never straightened my hair. I like to think I have my own style, but that style is influenced by fashion and I've no delusions about that and no compunction about saying so.

lostandfoundedges · 06/12/2021 19:27

Interesting thread OP. I'd like to say up front that I am a jeans wearer.
I mainly wear a straight leg rather than a skinny myself.
BUT I have recently been taking a course at a University and I don't think I've seen the female students (the ones in their 20s) wearing jeans. They wear trousers or joggers. The trousers tend to be 'peg' shaped as they were called in the 80s and the joggers are cuffed at the ankle. So among that age group it would appear from my limited sample size, that jeans are out.

LiveFromNewYork · 06/12/2021 19:48

I work in a London uni and live round the corner from another and would say skinny trousers of any description are not ‘in’. Baggy silhouettes, where the students look like they’ve just dragged anything out of the cupboard (not even their cupboard as nothing really fits) in the dark, is the look. And that’s kind of how I know the fashion game is over for me as I’d look terrible (and, the killer, I think they look terrible) and looking nice is now more important to me than looking fashionable. You do see plenty of skinnies on the streets, I actually like the way as pps have said, there just seems a lot more choice these days so maybe we can all just wear what we want. There’d be a lot less fashion waste if we just bought things that suited us and we liked rather than trying to follow trends endlessly.

Personally I love jeans. I like the way you can look quite nonchalant and insouciant (I don’t like looking like I’ve tried too hard). I like the way they take you nearly everywhere. I like all the pockets. I like the way they are not overtly sexy or particularly feminine. I like the way they don’t needs loads of taking care of and that they last for years.

I would agree denim is hardly cutting edge, another reason I like it. I think it kind of depends on your style though. I know people who hate wearing trousers (eg romantic types) but a natural/classic like me can’t live without them.

In winter I switch to corduroy. I kind of still count them as jeans as they have the five pockets, fly and button just like jeans.

woodhill · 06/12/2021 20:00

Some of them are wearing bootcut knit look leggings

WeirdArchitecture · 06/12/2021 20:04

Interesting.
For me, i never liked myself in trousers or denim, but was always called a tomboy regardless. I think 'how' we wear a thing is what makes it, largely.
A dress or skirt isnt inherently female or romantic, these are just perceptions we give them.
I am not remotely romantic.I just look like a chump in trouser type stuff. I wore skinnies for years as like Flo above i liked the look and the accessories. But i always wanted to go over to skirts. Eventually i did, and it becomes your new normal i guess if you are truly comfy.

Skirts became just a casual part of my life - outdoor, rough and tumble, wiping crap on them, etc Grin

WeirdArchitecture · 06/12/2021 20:05

but like i said, i wouldn't wear them for specific pursuits like hiking or running or riding, etc. I have a shelf full of leggings and other crap for that.

I went over to skirts and dresses for a while when jeans and trousers went ultra low rise. Skinnies I could live with but showing my arse whenever I bent down was a step too far even for me! I've since reverted back but I agree skirts don't have to look 'feminine' and they can be a practical choice - I mean I assume women originally wore them because it was easier to piss in public in them while retaining your dignity - fashion doesn't get any more practical than that!

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 06/12/2021 20:14

ChiefInspectorParker obviously jeans could go entirely out of fashion in theory; I just meant its not like hats. Jeans are one subtype of of trouser. Jeans going out of fashion is like bobble hats or beanies (a subtype of hat) going out of fashion.

Hats went out because the entire concept of respectability changed and we no longer have to cover our heads - I don't think covering our knickers is going to go out of fashion anytime soon at least in winter

MargosKaftan · 06/12/2021 20:14

Thinking about this again - jeans are basically like a neuteral clothing. There are times when they are super fashionable (when grey or beige have a moment of being very in), but the rest of the time they are just a handy thing to have in your wardrobe to go with other clothes to make an outfit. So jeans are the neutral to make particular tops or footwear into an outfit.

Sometimes they can be highly fashionable item in their own right, but most of the time just the "basics" bit you add to more interesting purchases to make a whole outfit.

woodhill · 06/12/2021 20:14

@ChiefInspectorParker

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme There have been long periods of time during which trousers weren’t in fashion, and men wore puffy shorts with codpieces (a look that would seem verging on obscene today I think) or breeches, with stockings. Jeans are only one type of trousers out of many, after all.
Weren't trousers as we know them only invented in the Regency period
MynameisWa · 06/12/2021 20:15

Just bought some leather effect leggings from Biba in the sale. Pull on, warm, super stylish for day wear and soooo comfy! Beat horrid jeans any day.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 06/12/2021 20:22

woodhill I don't know the history in detail, though its really interesting and I think I'd like to find out... I suspect that they were simply too wasteful of material or too complicated to make, back when everyone essentially wore kilts/ tunics, but I don't know.

I'm not sure how much of women wearing skirts was about urination in public and how much was decency gatekeeping - Victorians certainly had ideas about trousers on women being indecent, and I had a very conservative Christian acquaintance (who I knew due to us being the only foreigners where we lived for a time) who thought women shouldn't wear trousers because they emphasise bottoms!

woodhill · 06/12/2021 20:26

Yes it's fascinating, even in the 50s trouser, wearing by women was not done, there is a photo of my dm wearing Capri pants late 50s

Even in the 80s at my school girls were not allowed to wear trousers in 6th form

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 06/12/2021 20:33

woodhill we were only allowed to wear trousers if it was announced in assembly that the weather was cold enough (there was no set temperature, it was completely arbitrary as far as I remember, so we couldn't negotiate/ argue - it had to have been announced in assembly the day before) and then only corduroy was allowed - which may be one reason I love to wear jeans and have never worn corduroy since 😂

WeirdArchitecture · 06/12/2021 21:14

I was one who hated school trousers, i looked like a flump in them, i liked the long pleated swishy skirts we had an option for, although most girls went for mini's and hitched them higher once out of the area. I still like a little kilt type skirt in winter.

It is best to have the choice, isnt it? i sometimes pity men in this dept Grin

I did pee in a very, very rural spot a few yrs ago in a long dress. Was handy.

SusannaQueen · 06/12/2021 21:22

We were never allowed trousers at school (unless you were Muslim). It's the only time I've ever really worn skirts. I didn't apply for jobs where there was a skirt wearing rule, seems horrendous now that women could be prevented from wearing trousers.

gofg · 06/12/2021 21:33

And the pockets are fecking useless - I'm quite surprised we put up with that on here.

I live in NZ and had no issues with jeans pockets. I recently bought a pair from the UK - and I now feel your pain!! What ridiculously small pockets they have Confused Why, just why? I'll stick to NZ bought jeans in future.

ArabeI · 06/12/2021 22:06

Interesting thread. I hadn't thought of skirt/dress wearing from the feminist viewpoint. Just that I, personally, find it preferable. I might actually wear my new jeans soon, this thread has encouraged me. It's been years since I've worn any.

We girls were never allowed to wear trousers at school (80s/90s). Summer uniform consisted of skirt and cardigan and the rest of the time was skirt, blouse, cardigan, blazer (with appropriate hats for the season!)
Though I thought the trousers the boys had to wear were quite unappealing, like something my great uncle used to wear.

ArabeI · 06/12/2021 22:10

Summer was dress/cardigan, not skirt.

Labellex · 06/12/2021 22:19

I only wear jeans if I’m wearing a blazer, for the most part I’m either in fleece lined faux leather leggings or midi lengh dresses and docs, I really really hate tights cos I’m clumsy and end up catching them!

Labellex · 06/12/2021 22:23

My mum worked in London in the early 80s and she wasn’t allowed to wear trousers in her office even if it was snowing! Had to wear a skirt and heels!
