You know when people say skinny jeans are dated?

Only personal thoughts, not judgemental, just to make it clear!

Well I kind of think ALL jeans could be called dated. I don't really like denim stuff as it is, but whilst I agree that the ubiquitousness of skinnies is over, I still don't think they are any more dated than wideleg, boot, flare, mum jeans or whatever jeans in general.

The entire denim thing seems overdone now, to me. Truly overdone and boring. I am glad there are so many more clothing options out there currently, it was difficult to find anything that wasn't jeans focused for nearly two decades.

I get that they are practical, but people saying they're the only thing that works in winter....well i strongly disagree. The coat and boots matter most, no matter what goes under them. I used to do the denim in winter thing and always got wet, heavy and cold. Even tights and a winter midi skirt dry out quicker, and are easily covered by my coats.
I used to get numb cold legs wearing skinnies shoved into dubarry boots, or else flapping heavy wet boatsails with wider leg styles. Piss wet through and then the agony of peeling them off.
I get that they are easy, and can accept other people love the damn things, but i was so sick of them dominating the shops and coat/jumper/boots styles for so long.

And yes i know this is definitely a denim era (historically speaking) so i need to shut up Grin

It's just one person's opinion i know. I'm possibly the only one !
I see a lot of women desperately trying to find the right jeans and a lot of angst about them, and sometimes i just wonder why they dont just bin them and move on to something else entirely.

I really don’t like “trends” or “styles that are in” for anything. It creates disposable and cheap fashion and also bad choices. People should wear what suits them, for their lifestyle, body shape and preferences not according to whoever deems themselves influencial enough to try to dictate. I prefer to buy investment pieces that last and that I love for a long time.
A lot of seasonal trends trickle down from the runway shows but we shouldn’t be fashion victims to them.
Style never goes out of fashion. (As Coco Chanel famously quoted!)
I like my biker skinnies and so they’re here to stay for me. I don’t care what people think! I also have a couple of bootleg pairs that are so soft but are for summer only when the days are drier!

SusannaQueen · 05/12/2021 20:57

I've probably worn a dress or skirt about 10 times in the last decade and only really as something to chuck over a swimsuit on holiday. I have no comprehension of them being remotely practical, especially not in winter.
I only really wear jeans (or leggings for exercise) and have jeans for every occasion, flares, skinny, men's vintage straights, velvet, ripped with Liberty patches. I draw the line at mom jeans though.

greenlynx · 05/12/2021 21:03

I like wearing jeans. Dark jeans (skinny or straight) suit me and my lifestyle really well so I wear them. Maybe I’m outdated.
I wouldn’t mind wearing nice wool trousers (machine washable) but I usually look too round in them.

MummyJ12 · 05/12/2021 21:24

No @greenlynx you won’t look outdated at all! I’m sure you look fabulous. As you say, they suit you and your lifestyle so you’ll completely rock the look.

WonderfulYou · 05/12/2021 21:39

I love jeans.
I have all different colours and styles.
The only time I don’t wear them is when I’ve put on weight and can’t fit into them.

I can’t see me ever not wearing them as jeans never go out of style.

RandomDent · 05/12/2021 22:01

I can’t remember the least time I wore jeans. I have lots of black trousers though, of varying degrees of smartness.

dontgobaconmyheart · 05/12/2021 22:18

There is a middle ground between a current trend and 'dated'. I do think it seems to be the case that skinny jeans aren't hugely 'in' fashion at the moment, in favour of other looser cuts so I don't know it's that unreasonable to say so. Whether that actually matters to a person or not is again, another thing entirely; it doesn't need to. Fashion for something will always exist and change.

I've mostly retired my skinny jeans for now as I'm enjoying my mom/straight leg/slim straight jeans and feel good in them, I feel they go better with the tops I enjoy wearing -but I'm sure I will grab a black pair of skinnies out for winter as they still look good and suit some outfits, especially in cold weather. I don't feel particularly het up about it either way, dated doesn't mean they look bad. I wont be throwing them away.

greenlynx · 05/12/2021 22:31

@MummyJ12
Ohh thank you!!!!

Thanksagainand · 05/12/2021 22:38

can someone please tell me how to get tights to stay up? Then I’d wear skirts. Tights just seem so uncomfortable!

coogee · 05/12/2021 22:49

Wear the skirts without tights. Problem solved.

KimikosNightmare · 06/12/2021 00:11

All jeans are dated. Jeans looked unconventional and fabulous for a couple of decades or so from around the 1950s.

Nowadays they are boring and ubiquitous.

KimikosNightmare · 06/12/2021 00:15

@whatisthisinhere

I can't stand jeans. It's an age thing I think
Just curious how old you are? I can't stand jeans either. I haven't owned a pair of jeans since my late 20s.
PickAChew · 06/12/2021 00:19

You say everything else but I'm struggling to tvink of anything significantly warmer. Cord, maybe. Definitely not tights.

PickAChew · 06/12/2021 00:21

@MaryLennoxsScowl

Are you in a warm country and/or south England, OP? I’m in Scotland. There is no way a thin scrim of Lycra is keeping my legs warm under a skirt, unless you’re advocating going back to the days of layering flannel petticoats under a full-length wool skirt. I don’t wear leggings out and about for the same reason; they’re fucking freezing. Thick fleecy joggers are good, but hardly either stylish or suitable for the office (sadly), and wool-blend formal trousers are usually much less comfortable than jeans, as well as less robust and easy to wash. I’ll grant you that wet denim is a nightmare and tights dry faster, but in a downpour the only useful thing is a long raincoat, umbrella and wellies, really. I think most people also know perfectly well they have other options and aren’t just reaching for jeans because nobody has suggested just wearing a dress instead!
What I was thinking but in more detail!
RobertaFirmino · 06/12/2021 00:23

Regardless of whether the style of jeans you are wearing is 'dated' or 'on trend', if they do not suit your body shape, they won't look good. The best bet is always wear jeans that suit you, be they skinny, mom, flared, whatever. @greenlynx if your dark denims suit you then you will look good - do continue wearing them!

I've always thought of jeans as a 'staple'. Not ultra fashionable and not prehistoric either.

Megan2018 · 06/12/2021 00:24

I have never found jeans warm.
I find thick tights and dresses warmer. I do wear jeans but much prefer dresses on the whole. I have very casual dresses rather than dressy ones.

I do wear jeans, but not as a fashion item. I own mostly skinnies but others too. They are useful for transferring from home to horse without changing, I’ve ridden in a dress but it doesn’t do the tights much good!

I barely wore dresses for the 25 months I was breastfeeding, due to access issues. I really missed them!

KimikosNightmare · 06/12/2021 00:26

I don't know how anyone can think jeans are warm in the winter. Especially compared to a wool or thick cotton skirt or dress and opaque tights. I'm in Scotland too and really don't understand this idea that dresses or skirts aren't warm.

I always found denim a really horrible material- far too warm and clingy in hot weather and far too cold in the winter.

floatinginmyhomie · 06/12/2021 00:28

I hate jeans, I have one pair that are stretchy so more comfortable and I hardly wear them. I wear long skirts in the summer and trousers in the winter but they have to be comfy or I won’t wear them

KimikosNightmare · 06/12/2021 00:30

I have never found jeans warm

That's because they aren't.

As I said I live in Scotland too and the number of times I've seen reports of ill- equipped hill walkers being rescued my mountain rescue where jeans are mentioned is, well a fair few.

@MyOtherProfile 😂👌🏻

gofg · 06/12/2021 05:42

I find jeans far more practical, and warm, than skirts/dresses and tights for winter. I will be wearing jeans right until my last days on earth, even if I'm 100! Having said that, I hate trousers (uncomfortable) for work so stuck to skirts in my office job.

gofg · 06/12/2021 05:43

By jeans I mean bootlegs or flares btw.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 06/12/2021 06:08

I think that saying "jeans are dated" is similar to saying "shirts are dated" or "t-shirts are dated". Jeans nowadays is such a huge, wide ranging category of clothing. Similarly saying that jeans "aren't as warm as a dress" is daft as you can get thermal jeans - comparing your thickest tights and warmest dress to your least warm jeans is completely disingenuous.

I love my 501s - only discovered them after losing weight and now have 5 pairs, the first two bought new but the other three from vinted. I can wear thermal fleece/ heattech leggings under the pairs I bought new. I also have one pair of thermal jeans which is similarly warm to the heattech leggings + 501s combination.

I know lots of people don't like 501s - its completely a body shape thing - I used to categorise myself as an apple and despite having got rid of my big tummy thats probably still my basic body shape - my hips are only 8 inches wider than my waist. They wouldn't suit a pear shape not a true hourglass. They really do suit me.
I've had more compliments in my 501s than any other piece of clothing, though I experimented with dresses a lot over the summer I never look as good in a dress as jeans.

Also load bearing pockets are priceless - I loathe carrying a handbag and dresses with pockets are a cruel joke as you can't actually use the pockets properly without pulling the dress out of shape!
