You know when people say skinny jeans are dated?

Only personal thoughts, not judgemental, just to make it clear!

Well I kind of think ALL jeans could be called dated. I don't really like denim stuff as it is, but whilst I agree that the ubiquitousness of skinnies is over, I still don't think they are any more dated than wideleg, boot, flare, mum jeans or whatever jeans in general.

The entire denim thing seems overdone now, to me. Truly overdone and boring. I am glad there are so many more clothing options out there currently, it was difficult to find anything that wasn't jeans focused for nearly two decades.

I get that they are practical, but people saying they're the only thing that works in winter....well i strongly disagree. The coat and boots matter most, no matter what goes under them. I used to do the denim in winter thing and always got wet, heavy and cold. Even tights and a winter midi skirt dry out quicker, and are easily covered by my coats.
I used to get numb cold legs wearing skinnies shoved into dubarry boots, or else flapping heavy wet boatsails with wider leg styles. Piss wet through and then the agony of peeling them off.
I get that they are easy, and can accept other people love the damn things, but i was so sick of them dominating the shops and coat/jumper/boots styles for so long.

And yes i know this is definitely a denim era (historically speaking) so i need to shut up Grin

It's just one person's opinion i know. I'm possibly the only one !
I see a lot of women desperately trying to find the right jeans and a lot of angst about them, and sometimes i just wonder why they dont just bin them and move on to something else entirely.

I'm a jean wearer. Almost every day; they are my go-to. I never liked skinnies as I find them uncomfortable, especially around the knees. I wear straight leg mostly.

Maybe it's a regional thing. I live in a small town in western Canada, and rarely see a woman in a dress. I see more women in leggings than anything else.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 06/12/2021 06:14

It's easy to dress up or dress down a pair of skinnies. Other styles of jeans can look quite casual/scruffy.

Also, nearly all of my friends bought the same mum jeans style in the same week. It looked quite try hard.

elysianpavements · 06/12/2021 06:37

I never wear jeans either. They're so uncomfortable to me and so impractical (cold, stay wet, there's a reason mountain rescue teams are horrified when people head into the great outdoors in them). I know to most people different jeans give different 'looks' and they think blue denim goes with everything, but to my eyes that isn't true. Denim is a particular, casual look. As I was around before skinny jeans, I find it strange how many people think they're timeless staples. It's just been a trend, and as someone whose eyes were accustomed to other silhouettes, that parsnip look is something I really don't find flattering (I'm pear-shaped). But mostly the discomfort!

There really is a whole other world of clothing beyond denim. In winter I wear corduroy, which can come in different weights and thicknesses, velvet-type materials, technical fabrics, faux leather, wool/cashmere/thermal tights, and dresses, tunics or long jumpers with soft leggings - heattech or thermal if cold .

If we all wore the same it would be boring. I'm glad others are happy in their jeans. But if you're really reliant on skinny jeans, I would stock up soon, in case they're not as timeless as you think. The fashion industry has a strong interest in change and in us replacing our wardrobes. I still miss some of the 'timeless' clothes of the 90s that haven't come back yet.

coronafiona · 06/12/2021 07:00

@MissBPotter I am the same although tall Grinlove boots and tights for work but weeeknds aren't for tights!

Garman · 06/12/2021 07:05

What warm tights do you wear OP? I can never find any in physical shops and don't know what to look for online where I can't feel them.

Athrawes · 06/12/2021 07:07

Are skinny cords acceptable?

HelloDulling · 06/12/2021 07:12

I never wear jeans, but skinnies look very dated to my eye. I’m glad the silhouette has changed, wide and straight legged styles look so much nicer.

ofwarren · 06/12/2021 07:17

@Thanksagainand

can someone please tell me how to get tights to stay up? Then I’d wear skirts. Tights just seem so uncomfortable!
Another pair of knickers over your tights totally stops them from riding down.

Thanksagainand You just need to buy tights bigger than you think - try Snag and read the sizing info. Tights come down when they're too small, but it isn't always obvious that they're too small initially because obviously they're very stretchy so can be put on easily even if too small.

Its the same as jeans - they have to be the right size (and for jeans, cut/ style) for the individual. Jeans aren't universally uncomfortable if you buy the right jeans (mine are the most comfortable things I own despite being 100% denim cotton because they fit perfectly and I can wear them for 18+ hours without thinking about them) and neither are tights if you buy the right ones for your body.

It took me tilmy 40s to work out the right jeans for me and the trick with buying tights big!

hygtt · 06/12/2021 07:37

I have noticed a switch away from jeans, all the youths are wearing joggers & black trousers seem more popular then they used to be.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 06/12/2021 07:56

Can someone give a couple of links to a style of skirt and tights combo that’s warmer than jeans, please? If you mean ‘plus knee-high boots’ then that doesn’t count - I’m not going to wear knee boots to wfh. Also, just want to point out that mountain rescue don’t prefer you to be up a mountain in a skirt and tights either. They’d want you to be wearing proper waterproof walking trousers, I expect.
I ditched skinnies in about 2016, when trends moved on, but cropped wide-legs over DMs are really comfy and warm and you can wear thick knee socks under them and they don’t trail on the ground. Mom jeans too. I’ll admit the 90s jeans that are back in are dry weather only though!

Floisme · 06/12/2021 08:22

I think you've got a point, op. I can't see jeans ever disappearing as basic wear but I think the grip they've had on fashion recently might be starting to slip.

The fact that there are so many jeans styles around at the moment - it's great and I love the choice, but it also means there's no longer a dominant fashion look, which in turn means jeans-and-a-nice-top isn't such a safe, effortless outfit for a night out any more. And then for casual dressing we've got gym wear giving them a run for their money, so there's a bit of a pincer movement going on.

I agree their practical qualities are overstated too. I don't wear them in hot weather because they're sweaty and uncomfortable and, although I do like them in winter, they're not as warm as wool or corduroy. And the pockets are fecking useless - I'm quite surprised we put up with that on here.

oneglassandpuzzled · 06/12/2021 08:26

Velvet or corduroy jeans are the answer to the warmth issue with cotton jeans.

Amelion · 06/12/2021 08:29

You sound quite condescending and patronising OP.

Many women like jeans, wear jeans, find them practical, feel they’re fashionable and all the rest of it.

Up to you if you don’t like them but the lecture to others about how dated you think they look doesn’t come across well. As for alternatives - yes, literally every adult on the planet realises that jeans aren’t the only option for how to dress our bottom halves.

What were you hoping to achieve with your post? Get over yourself Wink

Bluntness100 · 06/12/2021 08:33

I never really understand threads like this, you don’t like jeans and don’t wear them that’s great, why do you care what anyone else wears.

TuftyMarmoset · 06/12/2021 08:42

I’m short (5’4) and can never find midi/maxi skirts the right length for me so have no option but trousers in winter! Also I hate fights falling down, laddering etc trousers are much more durable.

Needdoughnuts · 06/12/2021 08:44

I got my first pair of Levi's in 1967 and I haven't gone a week without wearing jeans since. My favourites as an OAP are M&S Lily slightly stretchy. Never cared about fashion only comfort.

Floisme · 06/12/2021 08:46

I can't speak for the op but for me the thread is about a fashion phenomenon and whether or not we're seeing the beginning of the end of it. I think it's interesting.

Cyw2018 · 06/12/2021 08:51

@TerraNovaTwo

I have really long legs, so I've stuck with skinny jeans as all other styles look naff on me.

I just wouldn't know where to start if I ditched wearing skinnies.

Likewise and I look ridiculous in turn ups which I think is for the same reason. Trying to find a decent pair of skinny jeans was a nightmare this winter, but I got there in the end.
Bluesheep8 · 06/12/2021 08:54

Piss wet through and then the agony of peeling them off.

Agony?Confused surely getting caught in the rain in ANY non waterproof clothing is a bit uncomfortable, but hardly agonising 🤣

KimikosNightmare · 06/12/2021 08:58

It is interesting. I wore jeans as a teenager in the 70s. As someone else said older people and children didn't use to wear them and at that time "women's jeans" didn't really exist. I bought Levi's mens jeans.

I don't understand the point about pockets being so fabulous on jeans- mine were so tight I couldn't fit anything in the pockets.

So far as particular styles of jeans, other than perhaps if I saw someone wearing flares, I wouldn't even notice. Jeans are just so ubiquitous they don't register with me as being anything other than jeans.

dropitlikeitsloth · 06/12/2021 09:07

@coogee

Wear the skirts without tights. Problem solved.
Tell me you’re from the south of England without telling me you’re from the south of England 🤣🥶
coogee · 06/12/2021 09:38

I’m not from the south of England.

coogee · 06/12/2021 09:47

But I don’t normally wear skirts/dresses in winter unless I am going out out.
