What do we need for autumn/ winter?

Bored of summer now. Want to start on my autumn winter wardrobe.
What style jeans? Skinnies are out. Will mom jeans work with boots? What style boots?
A nice trench maybe?
I'm on the hunt for a lovely long hooded cardigan in maybe cashmere too. Want to add to my cashmere sweater collection too.
Anyone anything else to add?

I had a tummy tuck recently which completely changed my shape so I need to re-think my Autumn/Winter wardrobe. All my current sweaters were chosen to hide/drape over my horrible stomach, but now I can wear fitted stuff and even tuck stuff in!

I'm looking for a classic, wool peacoat that sits just below the hips and isn't too bulky. Struggling to find one though - any suggestions?

Have also thrown caution to the wind and invested in some black, suede over the knee boots to wear with long sleeved tunic dresses this Autumn. I'm 50, but my legs are still good - so I thought fuck it, why not!

@BangingOn You’ve got great taste. The Finery dress is beautiful. I also love the other dress you ordered and was getting geared-up to buy it too, when I noticed it’s ‘dry clean only’. I draw the line at that. I find it an expensive pain and it’s terrible for the environment. It’s certainly gorgeous though.

SocksAndTheCity · 07/08/2021 14:05

I like the sound of those boots @peaceanddove - have you got a link? Smile

I've been wearing this www.matchesfashion.com/products/Merlette-Paradis-tiered-cotton-sun-dress-1334422 to death (it was expensive, but there's so much fabric it's probably very reasonable by the metre) and I'm hoping it'll carry into autumn with my leather jacket or a cardi and some boots. At the moment it's just stopping me broiling like pork in plastic on the tube Grin

KillingMeDeftly · 07/08/2021 14:08

I like that &OS dress @BangingOn but I think it would need careful accessorising to stop it from looking like something Freulein Maria wore at the Abbey.

BangingOn · 07/08/2021 18:24

@AnnieSnap thank you! I panicked for a moment about the dry clean only but you can machine wash at 30 degrees too, which I’m hoping isn’t them being optimistic.

@KillingMeDeftly you’re absolutely right about the accessories and I’m hoping it looks slightly less ecclesiastical when it arrives.

Gufo · 07/08/2021 19:09

I'd like some cashmere or merino jumpers to wear with pleather skirt and work trousers. Where is the best place to get ones that justify the price tag?

KillingMeDeftly · 07/08/2021 19:50

@Gufo Uniqlo?

SocksAndTheCity · 07/08/2021 20:22

@Gufo I got all my nicer cashmere second hand on the likes of Vestiaire and eBay, but for workaday stuff I bought a few of the plain crew neck sweaters from John Lewis a couple of years ago and they're still in really good shape. And you can wash them in the machineSmile.

BangingOn · 07/08/2021 20:32

@Gufo I have a couple of merino jumpers from H&M’s premium collection that I’ve been impressed with.

AnnieSnap · 07/08/2021 21:09

@BangingOn I looked again and I’m delighted. I totally missed that. It’s a great dress for autumn and winter. Any idea what constitutes a size 16 with them. Their size guide suggests 42, but it would be helpful to have the view of someone who has bought from them before.

BangingOn · 07/08/2021 21:46

@AnnieSnap I’m probably not much help as I’ve ordered both a 42 and a 44. I’m a 16 and own clothes in both sizes from them, but I’m curvy of hip so sometimes have to size up. It’s free returns so I usually order a couple of sizes to see which fits best.

I was equally as excited as you about the machine washability, not sure why they felt the need to confuse us by mentioning dry cleaning.

SocksAndTheCity · 07/08/2021 21:50

@BangingOn and I've just ordered a 36 and 38 in light of the washing machine news - thanks for that! I don't own anything from the shop so I'm looking forward to it.

BangingOn · 07/08/2021 22:08

@SocksAndTheCity hooray! I really hope it’s nice when it arrives.

SocksAndTheCity · 07/08/2021 22:18
@SocksAndTheCity hooray! I really hope it’s nice when it arrives.
Well I'm quite a lot shorter than the model, so I'll happily settle for not looking like Father Jack Hackett Grin

AnnieSnap · 07/08/2021 22:38

@BangingOn maybe I’ll order both sizes too then.

Positivelyrandom · 08/08/2021 09:05

@scaffoldingtheworld

I need

A smart waterproof jacket for days out, lunch kind of thing. Nothing casual.

Jeans. Good quality ones. I’ve given up on Next. Not sure what style to get though.

I was looking for boots to wear with opaque tights and skirts but got a pair in our local Next outlet for £7!

Jeans - I’ve been wearing relaxed and wide - they look great with boots - v. seventies, which I like.
KillingMeDeftly · 08/08/2021 13:09

@scaffoldingtheworld Have you tried Protected Species for a waterproof jacket? There's usually an x% discount via Mumsnet in August and their coats really are waterproof.

BangingOn · 08/08/2021 18:42

@AnnieSnap and @SocksAndTheCity I really hope the dress suits you both when it arrives (and me!). I have to confess my return rate for & Other Stories is high, but the things I have kept are some of my favourite clothes, same with Cos.

AnnieSnap · 08/08/2021 19:09

@BangingOn @SocksAndTheCity I also ordered this cardigan. Fingers crossed.

BangingOn · 08/08/2021 20:22

@AnnieSnap I love that! I could just transfer my entire monthly salary to Stories this month and be done with it.

HarrietsweetHarriet · 08/08/2021 22:29

I'd love to swap my entire wardrobe for Toast and Brora but not possible!

Also awaiting surgery so unlikely to be out and about much for next few months. But I do love cashmere and silk.
Treated myself to sale bargain Brora cashmere poncho and wristwarmers to match. This should cover autumn and spring and I'll even wear as a bed jacket if necessary!
Coat will be 3 year old Seasalt grey long parka style. Still love it. Think it's called Plant Finders coat. Gorgeous fluffy lining. Super cosy. Also have navy Hobbs pea coat, ebay bargain , several years old, wool and cashmere blend. Only problem is keeping it clean as it.picks up all the bits and lint like a magnet!
Jeans - staying with what I have M&S Magic jeans slim waist high. Look nice tucked in boots.
I'd like some new knee high boots and a lovely oversized grey cashmere jumper to wear with opaque tights over all my summer dresses I haven't had a chance to wear.

On the subject of wearing non-skinny jeans with ankle boots, I like this shape so will be buying some barrel leg jeans, if they suit when I try them on. Not necessarily these Whistles ones though: www.whistles.com/product/authentic-barrel-leg-jean-32612.html?ranMID=24794&ranEAID=2P555SNI1Kc&ranSiteID=2P555SNI1Kc-5jRFIfXskwp0IcYnzFMkrg&utm_source=LS&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=Who+What+Wear+UK

KillingMeDeftly · 09/08/2021 09:37

@LexCake I bought those jeans but returned them. I just don't have the right body shape for barrel leg jeans. Straight and skinny are much better on me.

lindyloo57 · 09/08/2021 16:46

@BangingOn, love the finery black dress, can I ask what's sizing like with the brand, also are returns easy as I don't have a printer.
