What do we need for autumn/ winter?

Bored of summer now. Want to start on my autumn winter wardrobe.
What style jeans? Skinnies are out. Will mom jeans work with boots? What style boots?
A nice trench maybe?
I'm on the hunt for a lovely long hooded cardigan in maybe cashmere too. Want to add to my cashmere sweater collection too.
Anyone anything else to add?

@RampantIvy I think it's hardly a surprise that most of the UK is urban vs rural Confused London itself has nearly 10M people, depending exactly how you count. So yeah, that's a lot of (potential) mumsnetters.

I love my trench coat - it's old but it still looks good and hasn't dated. I also have a leather jacket but it's less great with knits underneath. Personally I can't imagine any hooded coat being smart enough for my office or for going out, but I do have one to wear when I'm at the playground or nipping to the shops. I don't have to scale any fences so I'm perfectly ok to hold an umbrella with my trench.

@VenusClapTrap I've been eyeing this cropped cardigan from Jigsaw - not sure if it's boxy enough - might be a bit too fitted. I really like the sleeves though

VenusClapTrap · 03/08/2021 19:55

I love that one @Pigtailsandall - it’s exactly what I’m looking for, but unfortunately only XXL is left.

Okaygreatthanks · 03/08/2021 20:28

I bought a second hand Burberry one on eBay and I love it. Going to try and wear it and another lovely tweed jacket a lot in sept Oct before I get sucked into the vortex of raininess.

PalacePaper · 03/08/2021 22:52

I found a lovely pair of Hobbs knee high suede boots in a local charity shop a couple of months ago, so I'm looking forward to wearing them. I'll also be looking for some black ankle boots with a chunky heel to wear with midi skirts/ dresses and jeans. Having read this thread a cream cashmere jumper or cardigan may also now be added to my list Grin

I love autumn clothes and have plenty I'm looking forward to wearing so don't need much else, and I'm trying to plan and buy specific items to go with what I already have.

bubblicious3 · 04/08/2021 07:52

@Pigtailsandall

I have tons of clothes and don't really need much. However, my wish list would be:

White or cream fine-knit jumper (merino wool or maybe cashmere) to replace an old, quite a tatty one

Jeans. I can't wear jeans to work but I love wearing them on the weekend. I have a light blue pair but I'd love a high-waisted, slightly cropped pair of straight leg jeans. Could be slightly frayed but that's not essential. Can't seem to find a pair that fits the spec.

I've had the same coat for 3 years and though I love it I'd love to get something...less black. I'd love a long wool coat, maybe slightly oversized, in a checked or kind of a herringbone neutral. But it's not essential

Just bought some jeans from And/or that fit your description perfectly - the Venice beach boyfriend

I got some jeans similar to this too - Whistles Authentic slim frayed jeans.

@MissyB1

Good point about trench coats not being practical. I cannot imagine the weather being right for one 🤔 maybe a sunny just slightly chilly autumn day? So about 3 days a year then!
I always want to buy a trench coat but this is my issue. It’s either too warm for a coat or too cold/wet for a trench. I think they look so stylish though.

It’s the same with chunky knits! I want a nice fisherman style chunky jumper but the weather in the country goes from jeans and a tshirt to coat, hardly any in between days 🙄

VenusClapTrap · 04/08/2021 20:07

I love chunky knits. I have one I bought in Norway; it’s massive and a bit scratchy and I love it. I get what you are saying about the weather, but although I don’t wear it tonnes it is invaluable for those really cold winter days when you just can’t warm up, and I’m really glad I bought it. Admittedly it does spend most of its life just sitting there occupying the best part of an entire drawer though!

Oh and another bonus is it reminds me of those posters I had of Morten Harket back in ‘85… Grin

Really nice, lacy thermals.

The fine ones mean that many items can make the transition from autumn to winter.

Also boots.

Nice walking boots (flat)

and dressy ones

MissyB1 · 05/08/2021 07:24

Just to say I bought the M&S heatgen thermal tops last year and they have an annoying habit of riding up during the day. Also didn’t feel that warm.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 05/08/2021 08:10

bubblicious3 I’ve been eyeing up those Venice Beach jeans - glad to hear they are good IRL!

I do rate the Heatgen thermals but the sizing is all to cock. I would also like a thermal 3/4 length leggings if anyone sees any.

Okaygreatthanks · 05/08/2021 12:34

Uniqlo have amazing thermals including leggings and cycling shorts. They don’t ride up on me.

Also what I have done is buy thermal tights from primark or M&S and chop the bottoms off them!

MindBodyChocolate · 05/08/2021 18:15

I too love autumn and winter. I always start feeling a bit restless in August - it’s probably my least favourite month of the year! I’ve lost a lot of weight since last winter so I have a rather long list including…

Wool/cashmere chunky black roll neck
Investment winter coat in a colour that’s not black or navy
Knee length boots - probably black suede
Faux fur jacket in dark colour
Rixo jumper or cardigan - not keen on their dresses but LOVE Rixo knits.

Oooh thanks guys, got a pair of Venice Beach jeans heading my way (Azurite Dark)! My current jeans have now reached the proper scruff stage so 🤞🏻 they can trundle happily to beach cut-offs if those look good on!

@VenusClapTrap I bought a Dale of Norway 100% wool jumper in a charity shop for about a tenner just before Christmas and it was the best purchase I made all winter! Perfect for wfh days and I could even wear it under a thin coat and be warm when I was out and about. I checked retail prices and brand new the jumpers are about £200! Lots on eBay so I'll be keeping an eye on there.
SocksAndTheCity · 06/08/2021 22:58

I've just ordered this cardigan (as well as a new kimono robe as another thread convinced me that mine is getting a bit tatty nowadays Grin) from One Hundred Stars

onehundredstars.co.uk/products/cashmere-mix-cardigan-stork-black-marl?variant=31911545143354

I have lots of jeans and a pleather skirt as well as an old black calfskin shift dress (which is a lot nicer than it sounds), and I'm praying it'll cheer everything up a bit.

AnnieSnap · 07/08/2021 01:14

I have lost a lot of weight this year and my amazing Janelle Coat from Seasalt is way too big for me now, so I’ll be selling it and buying another. It’s the best casual coat I have ever had. I wore it on a cruise through Antartica. It keeps cold wind and wet out, but is lightweight and breathable. It is long and also looks surprisingly good I think.

I love Spring and Summer though. I never look forward to Autumn and Winter. I hate being cold and I hate the dark, damp days.

BangingOn · 07/08/2021 07:35

I am really excited about going back to the office a day or so a week, I’ve always been home based but miss the variety of going in occasionally, not to mention the smarter dressing.

I’ve ordered this for work as I love the accentuated waist:
www.stories.com/en_gbp/clothing/dresses/midi-dresses/product.draped-accentuated-waist-midi-dress-black.0962328001.html

and this which is actually for a party next week, but I’m hoping it will also layer well in the autumn:

brokenbiscuitsx · 07/08/2021 08:09

I ordered what I thought was the perfect military jacket (the one from Hush people have been raving about) and it’s arrived and I’m so disappointed. It’s boxy and stuff and really unflattering. Going to return. Back to the drawing board then Sad

ToykotoLosAngeles · 07/08/2021 08:10

I'l be digging out my Burberry camel wool coat this year. It didn't come out once last winter!

I'm wearing H&M Vintage slim jeans this summer but I'm not sure about them with my usual oversized wintery top half stuff. I might have to go back to black skinnies just as a leg covering rather than fashion statement but I have a couple of slim pairs that I can roll up with ankle boots.

I want another Celtic and Co jumper - I buy one nearly every year around my September birthday. Maybe this?
