What do we need for autumn/ winter?

Bored of summer now. Want to start on my autumn winter wardrobe.
What style jeans? Skinnies are out. Will mom jeans work with boots? What style boots?
A nice trench maybe?
I'm on the hunt for a lovely long hooded cardigan in maybe cashmere too. Want to add to my cashmere sweater collection too.
Anyone anything else to add?

^expensive purchase

RampantIvy · 03/08/2021 07:21

@BikeRunSki

For cashmere, try The Nearly New Cashmere Company. They “restore” used cashmere pieces, so styles, colours, sizes etc are one offs, but prices are great if you find something you like.
I love the sound of this. Maybe, if the wool has been washed several times there is less likelihood of shrinkage.

Love Autumn clothes!

I’m after a pair of boots from Celtic and Co that sold out last year. I’m hoping they’ll do them again.

RampantIvy · 03/08/2021 08:37

Why is the trench coat so beloved on MN?
I don't find them practical at all. When it rains I need warmth and a hood. We are rural, and climbing over stiles and tramping about in the mud doesn't work with a trench coat either. I WFH, and when we do go back to the office I will drive, so a jacket is more comfortable than a coat.

LazyDoll · 03/08/2021 08:46

OhGreatThanks they are true to size (but free returns so I tried a few sizes). They are SO cosy you can actually wear without socks (seriously I love them!) not that I did this much but just to demonstrate comfy stakes.

I wore them with dresses and thick tights and with skinnies turned up a bit to show off the fluff and chunky jumpers/shirt over a top.

MissyB1 · 03/08/2021 09:03

Good point about trench coats not being practical. I cannot imagine the weather being right for one 🤔 maybe a sunny just slightly chilly autumn day? So about 3 days a year then!

DinosaurDiana · 03/08/2021 09:05

Skinnies for me !
I can’t wear wool, so any suggestions for warm tops ?

DGFB · 03/08/2021 09:07

I wear my trench coats in April and May when the weather isn’t freezing and again in Sept through to end of Oct. I feel I wear them a lot! If it’s looking rainy then I take an umbrella

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/08/2021 09:33

I tend to wear my trench coat in early Spring and in Autumn, on days when I'm going to the shops or a museum, for example. It's lightweight but smartest up jeans and trainers a bit. Also just to and from work on days when it's not particularly rainy.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/08/2021 09:33

Smartens

bendmeoverbackwards · 03/08/2021 09:40

@RampantIvy I don’t get the trenchcoat love either. For in between weather I prefer a leather jacket, if it’s rainy I want a hood!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/08/2021 09:42

Love my leather jackets too.

BangingOn · 03/08/2021 09:49

Autumn clothes are my absolute favourite and I’m excited for September already.

My autumn staples are long riding style boots, lots of skirts and dresses, occasional slim jeans (skinny have never suited me) and cashmere or merino knitwear.

I need to top up my jumpers this year as my old faithfuls that have seen me through several seasons are starting to look scruffy. I’d like a couple of black jumpers and maybe an emerald green.

ExConstance · 03/08/2021 09:50

I have lost 3 stone this year so all my lovely old size 10's will fit again. Over the summer I've invested in two liberty print Brora skirts and silk blouses and a Merino hoodie in a colour called "Straw" I have too many boots but do want the Cream chunky lace ups in the Brora catalogue or similar. I've gong for low rise flares for the summer as they suit me better than other styles, being 5'3" - wide legs look a bit odd on me. Just bought a Sweaty Betty parka to keep the rain off so my autumn will be taken up looking out for what I hope will be sales bargains after Christmas.

Floisme · 03/08/2021 09:56

I agree trench coats aren't always the most practical of coats but they're still essential for swanning around and channelling Humphrey Bogart.
I also have a second one with a hood [smug face]

RampantIvy · 03/08/2021 10:01

Same.

Don't get me wrong. I really like trench coats and agree that they smarten up an outfit. I have had two which hardly ever got worn. Early spring where I live is far too cold for a trench coat, and I CBA with umbrellas as I prefer to have two free hands, and am likely to forget my umbrella.

RampantIvy · 03/08/2021 10:02

Also, I prefer not to cart a handbag around with me, and my winter parka has loads of pockets and inside pockets with zips.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/08/2021 10:30

@Okaygreatthanks thank you! I already own the Cos ones from 19/20 - and am delighted they still fit after a year of commuting to the kitchen table!!

Pigtailsandall · 03/08/2021 10:38

I have tons of clothes and don't really need much. However, my wish list would be:

White or cream fine-knit jumper (merino wool or maybe cashmere) to replace an old, quite a tatty one

Jeans. I can't wear jeans to work but I love wearing them on the weekend. I have a light blue pair but I'd love a high-waisted, slightly cropped pair of straight leg jeans. Could be slightly frayed but that's not essential. Can't seem to find a pair that fits the spec.

I've had the same coat for 3 years and though I love it I'd love to get something...less black. I'd love a long wool coat, maybe slightly oversized, in a checked or kind of a herringbone neutral. But it's not essential

Okaygreatthanks · 03/08/2021 11:26

@Supersimkin2

Zara do superb thin but thermal waterproof jackets and quilty parkas. They could withstand the Arctic and are very light/easy to wear. The knee length ones look suitably modern and smart.
I am seconding this as due to the wet cold winter weather here I am an expert on what gets worn and works - Zara puffas are insanely good for the price. I bought a long black one and a cream hip length one last year and either one or the other was on me all the time.
Slothkin · 03/08/2021 14:58

Although on a much more practical front I’ve just got a new bra after a fitting and feel like a new woman so a couple of hmmm t-shirts have been returned to the fold!

VenusClapTrap · 03/08/2021 16:20

I would like a white boxy or cropped cardigan to wear with summer dresses to extend the season. If any of you see a nice one please shout.

@RampantIvy well presumably because not everyone has your lifestyle. A trench coat works for me, commuting in London - like a lot of city dwellers I rely on public transport and a trench looks smart and goes with work clothes or when I’m out at the weekend. I don’t need to wear an outdoorsy type of jacket as it wouldn’t look anywhere near as good.
Kanaloa · 03/08/2021 18:47

My trench coat works well for me on occasions like a day out in a city, when I want to look smart but not too fancy. Of course it doesn’t work for mucking out horses or walking in the snow but it suits for some occasions.

RampantIvy · 03/08/2021 19:31

There must be a lot of London/other city mumsnetters then.
