Are people really giving up skinny jeans? What are flattering alternatives?

So everywhere I look online people are being told to ditch the skinnies. Dd10 assured me that NO ONE wears them now.

But everyone I see seems to? I have a pair of mom jeans and balloon leg but they are sooo unflattering. I'm a size 12, tall, hourglass shape and chunky of thigh. I'm sick of feeling enormous in these new shapes! Anyone found anything flattering that aren't skinny jeans? I look like an obese clown.

I'm 30yo and 100% sticking with skinny jeans.

Duvetstay · 16/04/2021 20:58

I'm 40 and feel til recently I've been able to make a fashionable shape of clothes work for my figure but can't get my head round this! Could try a skinny flare (zara have some nice ones) but what shoes??? And will people just think I'm Zooming in from 2002???

I think some boyfriend jeans can be flattering, but maybe it's just because I'm a bit sick of skinny jeans and it makes a nice change! Having said that, I still have a few pairs - it's hard to give them up completely. I like the M&S boyfriend ankle grazers at the mo.

Aquamarine1029 · 16/04/2021 21:00

I'm 48 and you'll have to pry my skinny jeans out of my cold, dead hands. I love them and look great in them, why would I stop wearing them? I couldn't give a fuck what the latest "fashion" is.

Beebopawhop · 16/04/2021 21:01

I went into new look today to find something for my neice (age 15) and looked at the jeans section...all skinnies with the hint of mom jeans! If they are so out why are they still on sale and people buying them? I bought a pair of girl friend jeans from Sainsbury and I look like a twat to be frank. Skinny jeans make my butt look good and everything else.

Bumberlee · 16/04/2021 21:04

When skinny jeans exploded in popularity we got used to them. You still get some saying parsnip legs or whatever but many people still wear them. You get used to the way they look and when you have sorted put the rest of the outfit then it all comes together. The same with looser jeans. Your eyes will get used to them and you need new tops, something that shows off your waist by being cropped or tucked in or tight top.
It's harder to wear the same loose tunic style tops and longer tops with loose big jeans, that just makes you look big all over.
Light jeans are so unflattering when loose but wide black jeans are ok.

Bumberlee · 16/04/2021 21:06

I think the new jeans cuts need a whole new wardrobe, new shoes new style of tops.. thats why they are so hard to wear. They just dont work with skinny jeans wardrobe.

KurtWilde · 16/04/2021 21:11

There's no way I'm giving up my skinny jeans!

Duvetstay · 16/04/2021 21:12

Totally agree with you on all fronts bumberlee... My shoes/tops etc etc are wrong.

I do generally tuck tops in but baggy jeans seem to have a baggy fly area so I look massive.

Is it just me Angry??

I got some flattering boyfriend jeans from M&S of all places

Duvetstay · 16/04/2021 21:14

Ohh, can you link?

felineflutter · 16/04/2021 21:14

The french tuck can help with tops.

OverByYer · 16/04/2021 21:16

Remind me of the Levi 501s I used to wear back in the day

Ohpulltheotherone · 16/04/2021 21:20

You can get a slim or skinny mom jean. They come up fairly fitted around the hips and bum, slight baggy to the leg and taper in nicely at the ankle.

I am size 12 and they look good with converse and heels.

Something like this

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 16/04/2021 21:21

They are so practical and versatile, you can literally wear any shoe, boot or trainer with any height heel, rolled up or down, no other shape offers this, I don’t care if someone tells me I should be wearing balloon jeans, flares or whatever to be fashionable, I really don’t want wet material flapping around my ankle on a dog walk or stressing in the morning whether my shoes look right with a boot cut, for that reason alone skinny jeans will always be around I think. I always get mine from River Island, they certainly haven’t stopped selling them and in fact I tried to get some Molly skinnies then other day online and they were completely sold out in my size so plenty of people are still buying them. The only jeans I like are skinny, relaxed skinny or slim, I think mom and balloon jeans just add bulk and are unflattering on most people, but hey they are fashionable apparently 🤷‍♀️

Twattergy · 16/04/2021 21:22

I have both but wear skinnies much more. Agree with comments above that baggy jeans require totally different top halves than skinnies. Mom jeans make me look 2 sizes bigger (I'm a petite size 8/10), even my son said why does your tummy look big? when I first wore the mom jeans. I'll keep trying w mom jeans but I am struggling!

helenoftroystonvasey · 16/04/2021 21:22

I recently bought some boot cut but I feel like a 90s throw back. I'm short fat and pear shaped

OP the way you describe yourself sounds
Like perfect Mom Jean body type

You sure they don't look right? How you styling them?

mynameiscalypso · 16/04/2021 21:24

Totally agree about the French tuck. Makes all the difference. Plus a bit of a roll of the hem. I have been very very very pro skinny jeans for the last 15 years but I can't imagine going back to them now. Squeezing myself into skinny jeans when I could hang out in comfy boyfriend/mom jeans just sounds so appealing.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 16/04/2021 21:27

The only other jeans I like that I can’t get for love nor money (so are deeply unfashionable) are low rise baggy jeans that I wore back in the early nougties I think, they used to look great with a fitted t shirt and trainers, All Saints style, but all I can find are high waisted, I hate high waisted jeans! Talking of All Saints, is it just me who misses combats?

tweettweettweettweet · 16/04/2021 21:28

My dd14 told me skinny jeans were out too. I'm currently sat in my comfy skinny jeans. I get a monthly lookiero box, so I've asked for some new style jeans. My stylist always pulls it out of the bag for me, so hopefully she'll put together an outfit for me. I generally ask for dresses.

Duvetstay · 16/04/2021 21:40

helenoftroystonvasey... Yes, I know, they should suit me which makes it worse! I like high waisted styles but as I have chunky thighs and big hips they just add bulk.

So these jeans www.marksandspencer.com/mom-high-waisted-ankle-grazer-jeans/p/clp60448793?color=DARKINDIGOMIX#intid=prodColourId-60497922 boots www.selected.com/ie/en/sl/femme/shoes/croc-high-heel---boots-16075972.html?cgid=sl-femme-shoes&dwvar_colorPattern=16075972_Black and cropped striped tee tucked in.

I haven’t worn skinnies for quite a long time and mostly have straight leg jeans as well as some wider ones and a pair of barrel leg. I wear them with tees, shirts or jumpers either tucked in or cropped or rolled up somehow but almost always show a waistline.

I find them much more flattering and more comfortable than skinny jeans. I’m tall at 5 10 size 8 but with fairly muscular legs from running and cycling and I like styles that are a bit more relaxed around the leg.

I haven't worn skinny jeans for 3 years. I did keep one pair I like. I just wear straight or boyfriend.
