Are people really giving up skinny jeans? What are flattering alternatives?

So everywhere I look online people are being told to ditch the skinnies. Dd10 assured me that NO ONE wears them now.

But everyone I see seems to? I have a pair of mom jeans and balloon leg but they are sooo unflattering. I'm a size 12, tall, hourglass shape and chunky of thigh. I'm sick of feeling enormous in these new shapes! Anyone found anything flattering that aren't skinny jeans? I look like an obese clown.

I think the new jeans cuts need a whole new wardrobe, new shoes new style of tops.. thats why they are so hard to wear. They just dont work with skinny jeans wardrobe

Isn’t that the fashion industries point. You have to go out and spend more money on clothes.

I must admit to having my own style that bears no resemblance to fashion. People know I wear the same clothes over and over. Fashion comes and goes but I wear the same things whatever is in or out.

Combats are in

Did combats ever go out?

My DS1 (17yo) has always since a child refused to wear jeans and steadfastly sticks to combat trousers, which he mostly has to buy from hiking shops. He'll be delighted if they become easier to buy.

I've never liked skinny jeans. Never really got into them for regular wear.
I'm afraid I'm still wearing my flares and wide legs!

@Bumberlee

When skinny jeans exploded in popularity we got used to them. You still get some saying parsnip legs or whatever but many people still wear them. You get used to the way they look and when you have sorted put the rest of the outfit then it all comes together. The same with looser jeans. Your eyes will get used to them and you need new tops, something that shows off your waist by being cropped or tucked in or tight top.
It's harder to wear the same loose tunic style tops and longer tops with loose big jeans, that just makes you look big all over.
Light jeans are so unflattering when loose but wide black jeans are ok.

Grinat Parsnip legs? I had never heard that beforeGrinGrin

Echo what PPs said about needing a whole different wardrobe to go with a new jean style. You need a slimmer, fitted or tucked in (french tuck is good to get you into it) top, and roll up hem to put on with boots for winter.
I went from skinny to mid rise slim as a gateway jean 😅
Google or luck up looks on Pinterest for ideas.
Then I just slowly changed over one or two tops, so didn't get rid of the skinnier straight away as I only had a couple of outfits pulled together that worked.
Also I think a bigger bum, wide hips, chunky thigh is in, which if you were a teenager in the Kate Moss era is hard to get your head around.
Of course, you can just stick with skinnies if you like them and are comfy. There are still tonnes of people wearing them.
I made my skinnies look a bit more current by wearing them a shorter length, more ankle grazer.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

I remember when no one could imagine flares or bootlegs going. But they did.

Exactly and I hated skinnies when they first came in because they cling to arse and thighs! But all my tops were for wearing with bootcut low rise jeans so looked totally wrong.
Once I saw people my size and shape looking good in them I noticed what they were wearing with them and copied! And that's what I'm doing now too!!

I've noticed more young people ditching skinny jeans. The three inches too short jeans/trousers may be starting to die out (good if that's the case as it was one of the worst fast fashion trends ever).

I'd just like to see leggings go completely, as there is no such thing as stylish leggings in my opinion.

To copy another poster on here, they can prise my skinny jeans out of my cold dead hands. Sophie of Wessex is still wearing them which is good enough for me.

Also, how are people changing jeans style at the moment when changing rooms are mostly not open? Does it demonstrate some kind of status, that these are the people that can afford to buy 20 pairs of jeans and then send 19 back? Unless you have model measurements how is it possible.
@Hohofortherobbers what is the length like on H&M bootcut? I’m 5ft 2 and most jeans are too long for me.
@MissyB1 H&M sell them at different lengths, I bought mine at 34" length, I'm fairly long legged. Not sure they do this style anymore but if bootcut is coming back no doubt they will restock with similar

Agree with posters saying that when jeans change the whole silhouette changes with it. This is why it takes years to come about - not even fast fashion expects you to switch your whole wardrobe in one season. I've held out against a new jeans shape loads of times and what always brings me round are the shoes and the tops that go with them. So I wasn't too pleased when skinnies came back last time as I remembered them from the late 70s/early 80s and not fondly, but then I fell for a long, boyfriend-style cardigan in Gap and realised it would look much better with skinnies than flares.

If you want a gentle change, I can't see a lot of difference between the current straight leg (which is much narrower than in previous decades) and the skinnies of the early noughties.

The silhouette is changing that’s why skinnies will go. With skinnies and leggings the focus was on the legs. They were often worn with loose tops.

But now we have cropped and close fit tops which shifts the emphasis to the waist. Calf length dresses are current which is another move away from the focus of the legs.

@Missyb1 you want oasis scarlet bootcut, you get them on ebay, its a style I used to wear when boot cut were around the first time, They fit just like a skinnie on bum and hips with a small bootcut from knee down, they are the only other jean I wear other than skinnies.

MissyB1 · 17/04/2021 18:29

@lindyloo57 ooh thanks I’m going to search for them now!

That would send me running in the opposite direction!

I’m a bit over skinnies. I still wear them sometimes but I feel much more current in boyfriend jeans and skinny flares. You do have to adapt the wardrobe though. M&S surprisingly the motherlode of new and fashionable jeans shapes!

I think skinny jeans suit maybe 20% of people who wear them. Genuinely think many others are just brainwashed into thinking they're a good look on them. People always rail against the dying of a familiar trend but many of these same people were aghast when skinnies first started taking over. Time is a great healer!

I've recently bought three new pairs of jeans after being welded to my skinnies for a decade.

I bought a pair of girlfriend, a pair of boyfriend and a pair of mom jeans.

It's taken work but I'm finally coming round, what has made them work is just buying a whole load of new tops - not ideal! So they all look better with either a cropped (not short but waist length, I am 40 and a mum to three so my stomach is not for public consumption) or tucked in tighter top. The looser or boxier tops I wore with my skinnies do not work at all.

Shoes are a problem though, converse are ok or other neater trainers, but I can't figure out how you wear smarter shoes?

Wish me luck Grin

Oh also, as to how I bought them - ebay! I only spent a fiver on each so I don't really care if they didn't fit. I can highly recommend it if you want to try new shapes but don't want to shell out.

I've bought boot cut and l prefer them. It really doesn't matter if skinny is over, wear what suits you and what you like. All it means is there is more choice for those that don't want skinnies.

I wear straight leg or girlfriend jeans. They aren't that different to skinnies, as a pp said. They are quite fitted on me, on my hips and thighs. But they're looser on the ankle. I don't think straight leg is a trend tbh. They are so bland they're probably a classic. I also have sized down in my gf jeans, so they're more like straight cut anyway. I'm hoping to never have to get rid of these styles Grin

PollyThePony · 17/04/2021 20:46

Also agree though, that if skinnies are your favourites, it's completely fine to continue wearing them. I don't like the tight fit round my ankles. I really do look as if I have parsnip legs in them Blush
