Are people really giving up skinny jeans? What are flattering alternatives?

So everywhere I look online people are being told to ditch the skinnies. Dd10 assured me that NO ONE wears them now.

But everyone I see seems to? I have a pair of mom jeans and balloon leg but they are sooo unflattering. I'm a size 12, tall, hourglass shape and chunky of thigh. I'm sick of feeling enormous in these new shapes! Anyone found anything flattering that aren't skinny jeans? I look like an obese clown.

I've been wearing mine non-stop, @Iamthewombat! Mine are definitely baggyish round the legs but snug in the waist and hips - so comfy, and a refreshing change!

Willowispa · 20/04/2021 12:46

Surely there comes a time in life that you don't have to be a slave to fashion to this extent?! 😂😂 I couldn't give a shiny shit if skinny jeans aren't 'in' anymore, I'll still wear them as I like them, they're hardly a shell suit!! So glad I reached my thirties and got the confidence to not give a shit about being a sheep anymore!

To be honest I think for a lot of people it's more the fact that skinny jeans' monopoly over the denim market is now easing and there are plentiful options that allow a bit more coverage and comfort! 😁 I do have some high-waisted skinnies, which I love, but there are so many more options now than a few years ago for those of us who find them a bit constricting. Also as I've got older I spend less time worrying about what flatters me, so it's comfort for me all the way!

Choosing to wear different styles of jeans that are more current is hardly ‘being a slave to fashion’, is it? Nor is it ‘being a sheep’.

If you had been born in 1890 would you have continued to wear long skirts, button boots, stays and a shawl even in 1940, because you didn’t want to be a ‘slave to fashion’?

Floisme · 20/04/2021 14:25

I think that describing experimentation with a different style of jeans as slavery to fashion is not only a bit rude but also betrays a lack of understanding as to how most people actually shop for jeans.
The switch to a new style takes years to take effect because most people only think about it when they need new jeans - i.e they'd be shopping anyway. And then the next time they buy a top, they look for one that works with the new jeans. And so on.
Like I say, the change takes years, so I advise anyone dropping in to pontificate about the many faults of fast fashion to go and look for another thread because this isn't it.

PollyThePony · 20/04/2021 14:48

I did enjoy "I'm so glad I've reached my thirties...", because I'm nowhere near. Ahem Grin

MissyB1 · 20/04/2021 14:55

Well I went into Fatface today to look at their bootcuts - absolutely none in store!! In fact the whole shop was full of winter sale stuff. Annoying! I want to look at jeans before I buy them, I’ve already sent 3 pairs from other shops back because I bought online.

Lovingspring · 20/04/2021 16:16

I am an inverted triangle shape so glad skinnies are becoming less fashionable. They do not suit my shape.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/04/2021 17:12

Shell suits are due a reappearance🤮

pinkearedcow · 20/04/2021 17:55

I just wish Topshop Martha jeans were still around, they were my favourite ever jeans.

MissyB1 · 20/04/2021 18:18

Ok here we go again. I've now ordered a pair of Girlfriend and a pair of bootcut from fatface - I'm not getting my hopes up too high!

PollyThePony · 20/04/2021 18:25

Oh God, not shell suits! The horror!! Never. I'd sooner have a mullet (which I don't like and which I hear are back)

fizbosshoes · 20/04/2021 19:21

I remember being desperate for a shell suit when I was about 10 and my parents wouldnt get me one! In later years I felt quite grateful there were no pics of me in that particular fashion disaster (I have had plenty of others including an awful perm)

Despite having missed out the first time, I'm quite happy to let shell suits pass me by.(for some reason I associate them with Jimmy Saville!)Confused

PollyThePony · 20/04/2021 19:29

Oh, I had a shell suit Blush. I wore mine with patent shoes. I've seen the photos. Unbelievable. It was not a good look!

FreekStar · 20/04/2021 19:46

My 15 yoDD won't wear skinnies- she either goes for a straight legged crop or a fitted flared jean- she wears with chunky or platform trainers, or platform sandals or boots. Tops have to be very fitted or cropped and then an oversize jacket or coat over that. This look is NOT going to look good on my 48 year old body!

Having said that though- it can be adapted to suit- smart dark coloured skinny flared jeans look lovely with wedge sandal and a blouse tucked in or with an ankle boot with a block heel. The only problem with flares is that you need ones of different lengths to wear with heels and flats as otherwise they they either drag on the floor look half-mast!

I remember frayed wet bootcuts only too well and will not be doing that look again!

Mint velvet do great jeans appropriate for 'middle aged' women!

FreekStar · 20/04/2021 19:51

Love the look of these!

Roszie · 20/04/2021 19:56

Are next jeans true to size?

fizbosshoes · 20/04/2021 20:07

I generally find next comes up a bit big. I am a size 8 (not stealth boast as I'm really short, so look very average sized) and often in skirts/trousers in next, a 6 is too big. I have some age 12 jeggings from next - my hips, bum and thighs are much heftier than your average 12 year old but they fit well.

coogee · 20/04/2021 20:15

I'm a 6 and found the same to the extent I stopped bothering to go in. However, I was going to give them another try to see if they had changed their cut.

I don't think I look like a Gestapo officer! I mean I don't think of them with curves up top...

incenseandpeppermints · 21/04/2021 07:42

@ZaraCarmichaelshighheels

The only other jeans I like that I can’t get for love nor money (so are deeply unfashionable) are low rise baggy jeans that I wore back in the early nougties I think, they used to look great with a fitted t shirt and trainers, All Saints style, but all I can find are high waisted, I hate high waisted jeans! Talking of All Saints, is it just me who misses combats?
Love combats. The All Saints look was/is great!

Some people obviously do...

NutellaEllaElla · 21/04/2021 08:51

Why would you want to dress like your 10 year old?? Or like a teenager?

UnaOfStormhold · 21/04/2021 10:32

Coogee I can reassure you I don't look like that!

Bythemillpond · 21/04/2021 13:21

I know a few people in the 1970s who wore long skirts and shawls. I know someone who doesn’t own a pair of jeans and wears 1940/50s clothing. Another who only wears vintage 70’s clothing.
I think for a lot of people what is in fashion passed them by long ago. They have their own style
