Are people really giving up skinny jeans? What are flattering alternatives?

So everywhere I look online people are being told to ditch the skinnies. Dd10 assured me that NO ONE wears them now.

But everyone I see seems to? I have a pair of mom jeans and balloon leg but they are sooo unflattering. I'm a size 12, tall, hourglass shape and chunky of thigh. I'm sick of feeling enormous in these new shapes! Anyone found anything flattering that aren't skinny jeans? I look like an obese clown.

Talk about missing the point. Which was, it’s all very well making sanctimonious declarations about not being ‘a sheep’ or ‘a fashion victim’ and thus never changing the way you dress, but in real life people always change their attire as the world moves on. Otherwise they would look like an anachronism in their crinoline/ruff/periwig/liripipe.

That’s a world away from someone in the 1970s deciding to channel Stevie Nicks, or someone not liking jeans.

They're really lovely.

The point is earlier in the thread there were posters talking about getting a whole new wardrobe of tops to go with the new fashion of mum jeans.

Is that an attempt at a non sequitur?

You quoted my post refuting a PP’s claim that not sticking to what you’re used to into perpetuity makes you a ‘sheep’ or ‘fashion victim’, using Victorian dress to illustrate the point.

You contributed your memory of somebody wearing long skirts and shawls in the 1970s. Like a high proportion of women following the actual fashions of the 1970s, and your experience of somebody who doesn’t like jeans.

Neither of which means that the individuals you mention grew up wearing shawls/long skirts/1940s clothes and refused to give them up because they didn’t approve of fashion or being a sheep, etc.

Now you think that the discussion was about buying new tops to go with mum jeans?

I love being a 'slave' to fashion- it's nice to experiment with the latest trends and a good excuse to buy new clothes. If you stick with the trends of the past you end up ;looking older and 'frumpy'- because frumpy is always what has gone out of fashion- eg- when skinnies came in (thanks to Kate Moss) you looked dated if you kept wearing bootcuts- eventually skinny jeans will become a marker of the unfashionable and you will not look chic in them! (not at least until they come back into fashion again- which of course they will one day)

Some of us would rather look dated and 'frumpy' than look as though we are wearing a uniform! Also some of us are wise enough to know that some fashions just don't suit us and steer clear of them.

You're right Eagle. Skinny jeans never suited me; I've never really worn them so I've been wearing wide legs and flares for years and looking 'grumpy' and old fashioned - but they suit my shape so who cares. And now I am back in fashion, so yay! Mom/mum jeans look awful on me; appearing two sizes bigger than you are has never been in style as far as I am aware, and when you're a size 16 nearly 40 year old, even less so! So I will be steering clear of those as well. Bring on the wide leg jeans.
Amyheadache · 23/04/2021 16:31

In 10 pages this has probably come up but girlfriend jeans are your friend if you’re used to skinny! Not too baggy. Slight crop.
Joules ones are brilliant. Sized generously. I never shop there, but too country mum for me but the jeans are execellent x

pennylane83 · 23/04/2021 16:47

Talking of All Saints, is it just me that misses combats

I lived in the pair I had. So comfy. Really do wish they would make a comeback - not the daft tapered 'cargo style' trousers you see around now but proper 90s combats.

Delatron · 23/04/2021 17:14

I have taken to wearing my athleisure wear more. I normally wear a jumper/hoodie/ skinny jeans and trainers day to day for dog waking etc. With baggy jeans I just look so scruffy.

My girlfriend jeans work with a tighter t-shirt tucked in but not a loose sweatshirt.

Just tried some barrel jeans on. They did not work. Trying to find an outfit to go out in on Sat. Factoring in the need for a warm coat on top. I just can’t make these loose jeans work. I gave up and bought a dress instead. Then will wear that with boots and a furry jacket. Maybe I’ll just wear jeans less (until skinnies come back!!!)

Delatron · 23/04/2021 17:15

So I’m wearing gym leggings now more instead of my skinnies 🤣. So I don’t look like I’m swamped and can wear with a hoodie.

GrumpyHoonMain · 23/04/2021 17:17

I wear straight, wide leg, or super skinny depending on where I’m going. Straight leg probably gets the most use though.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/04/2021 17:22

I have to stick to the skinny jeans because that's what my tops go with!
I'd need a whole new wardrobe.

PollyThePony · 23/04/2021 17:22

I was out for a walk in Windsor great park today and I think most women I saw were wearing athleisure. A lot of brightly patterned leggings with crop tops or hoodies. Mostly looked great I have to say and the rest probably didn't care as they were so comfy Grin

Some of them were running, but most were out for leisurely strolls as far as I could tell, so I think it was a fashion / comfort choice rather than because they had to wear them.

Other women I saw had midi skirts and trainers on or straight leg / girlfriend jeans. I didn't see any skinnies at all!

LilyTheMink · 23/04/2021 17:32

I have seen more athleisure too for my demographic. Quick, easy 'outfit', who know if you are being active that day or not?

Billowy dresses with leather/denim jackets and white Vega trainers are popular in my commuter town today.

I bought some Levi 501 crops. Tentatively wore them all around town. Darling daughter (10) said they might look better on a "much younger person", but they were not doing it for her !

lindyloo57 · 12/05/2021 13:06

Those of you who want to try bootcut jeans, I recommend trying the oasis scarlet jeans, you can buy them on ebay, I brought 3 pairs for £5.00 each, and a white pair came today that cost me £ 6 .30, they were my favourite jean when bootcut were in before, the fit is like a skinny on waist/ hips then a small bootcut from knee down, be quick I noticed prices are going up as they become more popular.

LipstickLou · 12/05/2021 20:16

I have just bought a second pair of relaxed slim from Marks and spencer. I am plus sized and tall with skinny legs. Skinny jeans make me look like Max Wall. Flares ridiculous as I am chesty. Very comfy. I wear them all day, no need for trackies.

ValancyRedfern · 12/05/2021 22:03

Skinny jeans have never been and will never be flattering! I have worn boot cut jeans since the 90s and will continue to do so. It's nice to see more flattering clothes on the young'uns now.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 12/05/2021 22:53

That's your opinion. Some people wouldn't consider bootcuts flattering.

Actually on some people skinny jeans look great, whilst on some people they definitely do not flatter.

Some people don't care whether other people think their clothes 'flatter' them, and just wear what they like anyway.

Readyorknot · 13/05/2021 14:23

@pinkearedcow Topshop martha jeans were by far and away the best jeans I've ever owned. Perfect straight leg (not in any way flared or wide in the thigh like some of the straight leg styles today) and heavyish denim with stretch!
