Are people really giving up skinny jeans? What are flattering alternatives?

So everywhere I look online people are being told to ditch the skinnies. Dd10 assured me that NO ONE wears them now.

But everyone I see seems to? I have a pair of mom jeans and balloon leg but they are sooo unflattering. I'm a size 12, tall, hourglass shape and chunky of thigh. I'm sick of feeling enormous in these new shapes! Anyone found anything flattering that aren't skinny jeans? I look like an obese clown.

I love “mom” jeans, but I still wear skinny jeans from time to time. I’m in my 20s. I have skinny legs so most jean styles look nice on me. I think it’s great there’s more variety nowadays instead of just skinny jeans. Many people (men and women) wear skinnies, but they don’t suit them IMO and they should try other styles.

bluetongue · 17/04/2021 08:21

Love, love, love my skinny jeans. I’m short with short legs and with skinnies I can just buy ankle grazers in short length and they’re the perfect full length jeans for me. Other styles look good on taller women but are a nightmare for shorties like me.

Itsallhere · 17/04/2021 08:40

I stopped wearing skinny jeans a few years ago. I do think they don’t look very current now but not everyone is bothered by that of course. I’m wearing straight legs so still nice and slim on the thigh but a little looser on the calf than skinnies, or a v slight kick flair. Love them both and feel way more current than skinnies

TuvoknotSpock · 17/04/2021 08:57

I was a 00s teen and will be buried in my skinny jeans!

AvaCallanach · 17/04/2021 09:01

As a woman with lipedema (genetically inherited diet resistant tree trunk legs) I am delighted that skinnies are over. The closest I could ever come was "relaxed skinnies", still looked like sausages in too tight skins, and a straight leg is much much more forgiving.

Kaleidoscopecascade · 17/04/2021 09:03

Who cares what's in or not. Wear what you like and feel comfortable in. I love my skinny jeans and won't be changing them just because they aren't a fashionable thing anymore.

peboh · 17/04/2021 09:14

This makes me laugh. The amount of times I told my mum that what she was wearing wasn't 'cool'... and every time her response was 'who cares, I'm not asking you to wear it'
Nobody changed their clothing choices based on what children said, so why are people doing it now? You like skinny jeans? Wear skinny jeans. You do you, and tell your kid you don't need to base your fashion choices on what one generation says.

I’m 52 and I’ve decided to go back to bootcut. Skinny never really suited me anyway. Unfortunately I’m having terrible trouble finding any bootcut! The M&S ones are just cut too big for me. I’m hoping our local Fatface store have some in stock for me to look at, otherwise I will have to take a guess on size and order online.

Northernsoullover · 17/04/2021 09:21

I've just bought a pair of next enhancer straight leg. They are skin tight on my thighs but give the appearance of being ever so slightly boot cut. I wear them with my Adidas gazelles.

RhubarbFairy · 17/04/2021 09:21

I have found my people. I hate high waisted jeans. I feel like I'm being cut in half. And I can't bear the mom style either. They are not flattering on anyone. I will not be giving up my low rise skinnies for anymore thank you.

Plus I'm 5'0 so most other styles make me look horrendous. Skinnies give me a nice ass and make my legs look longer.

Rina66 · 17/04/2021 09:24

These are really flattering Mom jeans, but for what it's worth I'm still wearing skinnies as well , I've got too many baggy tops (especially oversized shirts) that look good with skinnies- I can't do baggy top and loose jeans, then I do look like I'm wearing DH clothes!

Yes, but don't ever put them in the tumble drier - they shrink like little bastards.
bellamountain · 17/04/2021 09:27

I think it's the type of skinny jean that makes a difference really. The jegging style look dated I think but there are some skinnies with a high waist and frayed bottoms that look on trend still when a tee shirt tucked in. It's more how you wear any style really.

Rina66 · 17/04/2021 09:30

I've just got these shirts from ASOS which are great with skinnies even though they're modelled with Mom jeans, I'm too old to wear them how they've styled them😂

My husband even questioned why he keeps seeing people in really awfully shaped baggy jeans now

I told him skinnies were out

We’ve always loved fashion but this has just too far now

crashbandicoot4 · 17/04/2021 09:44

I never had skinny jeans. I kept my boot cuts through the skinny phase.

I will never be told what to wear by anyone ever.

Hohofortherobbers · 17/04/2021 09:45

I have reverted to my H&M low rise narrow boot cut this week with retro adidas trainers and a skinny t shirt, I think this will be my spring look.

Wandamakestoast · 17/04/2021 09:46

I got the M&S boyfriend jeans which I find really comfy, I have a bit of a mum tum so with skinnies I had the muffin top issue and I felt I was always pulling them up. But I do worry the baggier jeans make me look bigger.

However, with baggier jeans, the issue is what shoes? None of my boots look right with them (I used to like a skinny jean and a Chelsea boot!). Thankfully I spent most of the winter in either slippers or walking boots....

I have some chunky white trainers I think look nice with the boyfriend jeans, but really need to find some other shoes to wear with them.

Delatron · 17/04/2021 10:39

I’ve just bought some girlfriend jeans which I feel are slightly more flattering than boyfriend jeans. They still feel baggy abs unshaply on me though...

I do love flares but they cause so many show issues. Especially in the rain. I’m dog walking every day in trainers so they won’t work. Maybe for a night out or something. Or sandals in the summer.

I keep going back to my slim fit jeans. Not skin tight on the calves and slightly cropped. I don’t feel fashionable in them though. May try and find a kick flare.

Delatron · 17/04/2021 10:41

It’s the shoes that are the issue.

Skinnies can be worn with anything, trainers, boots, heels, sandals. You can’t say that for other types.

Though we obviously all wore boot cuts for years and years. I guess the hem just dragged along the floor.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 17/04/2021 10:44

32 and 100% sticking with my skinnies. The only other option I have are straight leg with cuff rolled over which look ok but I much prefer my skinnies

MissyB1 · 17/04/2021 10:54

@Hohofortherobbers what is the length like on H&M bootcut? I’m 5ft 2 and most jeans are too long for me.

BraveGoldie · 17/04/2021 10:59

@Aquamarine1029

I'm 48 and you'll have to pry my skinny jeans out of my cold, dead hands. I love them and look great in them, why would I stop wearing them? I couldn't give a fuck what the latest "fashion" is.
This! (Except I don't look so good in mine, since lockdown!ConfusedSmile)

Ha yes!

@Duvetstay - there are two recent big threads on the same topic with loads of recommendations. One being the aforementioned M&S Lily, and the blue cigarette jean from Gap.
