Are people really giving up skinny jeans? What are flattering alternatives?

So everywhere I look online people are being told to ditch the skinnies. Dd10 assured me that NO ONE wears them now.

But everyone I see seems to? I have a pair of mom jeans and balloon leg but they are sooo unflattering. I'm a size 12, tall, hourglass shape and chunky of thigh. I'm sick of feeling enormous in these new shapes! Anyone found anything flattering that aren't skinny jeans? I look like an obese clown.

My black M&S Lily jeans shrank and are now in the charity pile but my blue ones are still OK. Love the style though and might buy some a size up as recommended in the other thread.

I was out in a student city yesterday where lots of 'youths' were hanging around. There were lots of boyfriends, wide legged and cropped jeans going on. I didn't think any of the styles I saw looked that nice tbh but I am always behind the times. I will wear my girlfriend jeans with Birkenstocks to be comfy in the summer but otherwise I am sticking to the Lilys which suit my practical jeans needs well. I just don't fancy wet hems again.

I get you OP, I have pretty good legs and am short so I find that skinnies give me a bit of leg length, I actually bought some mom jeans yesterday though for a bit of a change, I tried them on at home and dh absolutly hates them on me, he dosent often say something like this (I dress for me, not him) I have a few things he 'is not keen on' but I wear them anyway but on this occasion I will be taking the mom jeans back. he said they make me look like a 'small but lumpy potato', not a look I would generally go for Grin

Grin I felt the same about the girlfriend jeans I bought thebabe. They don't make me feel very glamorous at all. I have kept them because I can see they will be comfy for summer days out and that's it.

Absolutely love mine. They flatter my figure so I won't be giving up on them any time soon!

Slim fit jeans. I have always looked awful in skinny jeans so always tried to find slim fit. M and s are quite good as is next. No mum fit jeans for me. 5ft means I have no body and I dont want jeans that sit under my bust and make my stomach look huge

If it helps my teen says skinnies are out but by following fashions that don't suit you, you are outing yourself as uncool and old. (Think Edina from Ab Fab)
Mom jeans suit the skinny and tall (like my dd) but don't suit other shapes. If skinnies suit you then go for that or try looser styles like straight and see if that's a compromise to ditching skinnies.

I love the change, am hoping to find some nice slouchy jeans soon

Always a challenge as I am 6ft, may start buying men’s jeans again (like in 1989 Grin)

I like skinnies and they suit me, but am also bored with them and want change Smile

I think skinny jeans are actually a classic now. They may not be “in” in the same way as Mom or balloon leg jeans are right now but they’re not going to look dreadful if you wear them well with other trendy stuff. Especially if you’re 40 plus - like me. I don’t really care about looking like I’m 18-25 and in the height of fashion, I just want to look nice.

As a teenager in the 90s I always craved Levi 501s but was too poor to own them. Now straight leg is vaguely fashionable I’m living in my one pair (the current women’s style called 501 crop) and thinking of getting another. I might go for the men’s this time as I’ve had success with them in the past and I recall they had thicker fabric and deeper pockets than the women’s style.

I teach history of fashion.

Skinny jeans are too extreme to be a classic. It’s their wider sisters the straight leg jean who is the classic.

Skinny jeans are a mega trend ( a mega trend last 17-20 years) they will go eventually.

I'm mid thirties and haven't worn skinny jeans in years because I get really uncomfortable in them. My ankles swell easily and most skinny Jeans I tried have really tight ankles which doesn't help with my ankles. I have really wide hips and find mom jeans unflattering but I get a size smaller so it's tighter at the waist and hips and it looks better. I wore boots with them all winter where the cropped section on the ankles would sit just above the boots and it looked so much better than tucking the skinny jeans into the boots. Skinny jeans are uncomfortable Confused

@justawoman men’s’ 501s were my default jeans in the early 90s

No idea if they’d still be good! May have to try....

Maybe it will magically make me 31 again Grin

Can’t see how this will be true. Just look at the countless people saying they will carry on wearing them

A classic is what suits and works with the majority

I've just bought these. Bare in mind I'm 50 and have never claimed any style credentials but I'm very pleased with them.

Mom jeans seem like fancy dress for a 90s party to me Grin

I am old enough to remember "skintight" jeans in the early 1980s. We used to hem the inside seam to make them absolutely as tight as possible. Flares were hilarious, so we thought. 15 years later we were all in bootcuts.

And sit in a cold bath to shrink them to fit!

No, a classic interns of fashion is something that hardly changes. It isn’t about suiting the majority. Standard or trends suit the majority.

A classic is simple, safe and not extreme. Skinny jeans are extreme. A classic will be worn by any age group, bar young adults. My mother wouldn’t wear skinny jeans.

After living in jeans almost since birth I think I will just stop wearing them now. Not loving Mom jeans, I like a flare or even a bell bottom but I've put so much weight on, it's such a struggle to get anything flattering. I've ordered the M & S lillys mentioned and if they don't cut it, I'm doomed.Grin

Skinny jeans look nice, but they are very uncomfortable imo. I wear joggers (mainly Nylon) + leggings. I had a pair of baggy jeans and flared jeans but neither fit me.

I think we also become conditioned to what looks good/bad because of what we see everyone wearing. I don't think most people actually objectively look good in skinny jeans but they appear to look good because we're so used to seeing the shape/style. In time, it will become the same with mom jeans/boyfriend jeans I imagine.

Yes! I was in my mid-twenties when skinny jeans started to appear. I remember the horror of my peers and hearing a lot of "NO WAY am I giving up my bootcuts, they're so flattering and timeless" etc. (I may have uttered these words myself...)

Five years later we were all wearing them. They'd become mainstream.

I always enjoy your posts on the history of fashion and trends, by the way, ArseInthecoopwindow!
