What instantly ages?

Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

I looked in the mirror this moring and thought "You look your age, but you look damn fine" Grin

My hair was freshly washed and blow dried, I had some blusher and lipstick on and I was wearing jumper in a colour that suited me. As I was sat at a desk where my co-workers on Teams could only see my top half they couldn't see that I was wearing leggings and slippers Grin

I have extremely long legs - and arms. Shorter upper body. Fat buttocks, skinny ankles. Delicate wrists. My facial features are also a bit weird

I have a very funny image of you in my mind

For me the most ageing thing is over plucked eyebrows by far.
Also eyebrows which are too fair, gives a washed out look
Followed by people who've never updated their hair and makeup

To be fair, @MadameNaice your description puts me in mind of Theresa May!Grin

I'm telling you now as a natural redhead with incredibly fair eyebrows, I would look beyond ridiculous if I started colouring them in!

No wonder women have image confidence issues given all these comments! Wear what you like, fleeces, grey hair, mum boots (whatever they are), techno camouflage pants if you fancy. We are now in this country thankfully free of women being told what they are allowed to wear. Dress yourself with pride and for what makes you happy. And comfortable!

Celestine70 · 04/01/2021 21:30

What will make me look younger?

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 04/01/2021 21:45

@cathyandclare

Carbs are the most ageing thing for me. I usually stick to a lowish-carb diet but I ate waaaay too many over Christmas and have gained pounds- mostly under my eyes.

Fortunately I've got a long fringe to hide them Grin

That's a very long fringe. You must look like Cousin It's Nana. Grin
MammaSchwifty · 04/01/2021 22:19

not clothes or cosmetics, but... posture. A graceful straight posture communicates health and vitality

Thejoyfulstar · 04/01/2021 22:23

Grey hair
Beige cardigans
Bad posture

I also have a facial expression that looks like I'm trying to listen to a bad smell. My face screws up and I look like I've just hissed 'what?' at a fart. It's a really ageing expression.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 04/01/2021 22:26

@VanillaAndOrange

While I don't think it really matters how old you are or look, these are a few of the things I can think of:

Make you look physically older
Hair too dark for your complexion
Not having a fringe (unless you have a very round face)
Dry or weatherbeaten hands
Tired, droopy body language
Saggy boobs in ill-fitting bras

Make you look "old at heart"
Eyeshadow without mascara
Very small watches, especially with those stretchy metal straps
Very small rings on bigger hands
Straight or baggy trousers worn a bit shorter than average
Not putting colours together very thoughtfully
Very shiny shoes or boots
Neutral coloured tights
Thin tights in general, unless for a very formal/dressy occasion
High heels for everyday wear

Agree with many of those, except shorter trousers, which are The Fashion. Ditto thin tights - it's thick opaques that are now starting to look dated.

I would say that the single thing on this thead that ages anyone....

remembering Cathy and Claire! Ah...those were the days, when all we had to worry about was how to snog properly....

great UN @cathyandclare

PartoftheProbl3m · 04/01/2021 22:43

People who wear the same jewellery all their lives

Terrible blonde highlights in 60 year olds

PartoftheProbl3m · 04/01/2021 22:44

Tiny rings on fat fingers def. get your rings made bigger

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/01/2021 22:47

@PartoftheProbl3m

I can honestly say that I have never noticed those things on anyone. Having a bad hair day dear?

BettyAndVeronica · 04/01/2021 22:47

Grinthanks for that oneGrin, @Thejoyfulstar

Maireas · 04/01/2021 22:48

Fat fingers isn't an ageing thing.

PartoftheProbl3m · 04/01/2021 22:51

Hair? Why?

TinselTinsel · 04/01/2021 22:51

@Sexnotgender

Cold shoulder tops Matte foundation Kohl eyeliner
I have been known to wear all of the above and still get asked for ID and I'm 40 lol
Maireas · 04/01/2021 22:54

I think, @TinselTinsel, that these are not to do with looking old, rather some people's subjective personal style tastes.

BronH · 04/01/2021 22:54

Bloody hell!!! I’m wearing most of these ageing trends!!! Fringes? Who knew?

TinselTinsel · 04/01/2021 23:23

@Maireas

I do find this an interesting thread, as like other posters have said it depends on the individual and what suits them so different things can be aging. Some of the mentioned clothes / styles etc are worn by early 20's influencers yet others find them aging and again it depends on the person. The only thing I find is instantly aging is too much cosmetic surgery, I'm shocked at how young some "celebrities" are because they have so much work done and it makes them look older!
NiceGerbil · 04/01/2021 23:27

What about housecoats?

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 04/01/2021 23:53

I’m 35 and Jessica Fletcher is my style icon!Grin

But in all honesty, just wear what makes you happy and brings you pleasure surely? Life is too short to constantly worry about how you look.

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 04/01/2021 23:56

@NiceGerbil

What about housecoats?
Oh and my grandma had a wonderful housecoat. She was a housekeeper but she was always well groomed and impeccably dressed. She still looked her age but she looked good for her age, if that makes sense.
Candyfloss99 · 04/01/2021 23:57

@NiceGerbil

What about housecoats?
Just make sure you never wear it out of the house.
