Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

Nice eyebrows!
Seems the youngsters are loving the furry cattapiller look these days ConfusedGrin 🐛🐛🐛

Ddot · 05/01/2021 08:46

Oh those eyebrows that a drawn on with a sharpy. Not good

Ddot · 05/01/2021 08:48

Eye liner black on top nothing on bottom or if you must brown under. Leave the black all over for Alice cooper

Confusedandshaken · 05/01/2021 09:07

Modern makeup trends are very ageing. Mask like foundation, lots of contouring, very heavy lashes might look good on Instagram but IRL they make beautiful young women indistinguishable from frozen faced old ladies.

expatinspain · 05/01/2021 09:44

Poker straight hair and thin hair. Ok be always had fine hair and now I'm 42 it seems to be getting finer. I look much better with a soft wave to give it some volume, but I can't do it myself, so I just wear my hair up a lot. If anyone can point me towards an appliance or good tutorial to do a soft wave, please do!! My hair is naturally wavy, but looks like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards if I just leave it to dry!

CantGetDecentNickname · 05/01/2021 10:41

Instantly ageing? Refusing to accept that you are older! Clinging to the fashion from your youth while forgetting you are no longer in your twenties. Your body and skin tone change over time so the styles and colours that suit you will also change. Grey hair on both you and DP. Skin like leather if too much sun / smoking. Best example of someone looking years younger than they were was when I saw Cleo Laine in concert some years ago. Well into her 70s, she had dyed her hair a mid brown colour and looked 20 years younger. A blonde or black colour would have aged her.

Ddot · 05/01/2021 11:06

Expatinspin
Have you tried twisting into ringlets, leave to dry then separate them. You will need some product. I like superdrugs own mousse

Buggersticks · 05/01/2021 18:44

Wear what makes you feel happy!? The only thing I agree with totally is over dyed brown hair clearly done at home for years when the it's lighter at the roots and black from half way down. Also if an inch of white root growth 👌 Too much make up. Wearing a choker necklace if a double chin or crepey neck skin.

The spidery lashes and "baking" powder put me in mind of Barbara Cartland.

This thread gets better and better!

Having finished with the oldies let's slate young women!

As for modern girls and their eyebrows...

Marlene Dietrich anyone? Greta Garbo? Pluck em hard and draw the them on...

Fashions change. I would say if you look askance at what young women and girls are doing with make up, then you are by definition middle aged and have turned into to your mum Grin

Maireas · 05/01/2021 21:32

@NiceGerbil - everyone thinks that the style was best when they were young!
I've never seen a young woman with Barbara Cartland make up, I have to say, but I'd like to see them give it a go. Paired with a pink chiffon dress.

NiceGerbil · 05/01/2021 21:53

I genuinely don't go around thinking this stuff. At all.

This thread is eye opening in a really horrible way.

I really couldn't give a toss what people like. My friends are old to young. With all sorts of styles (or lack of Grin).

I just do my thing clothes and make up wise.

The main thing really is confidence. That's all. Then you can carry anything off.

I find it really sad tbh reading all this and knowing that it will have made an awful lot of women reading feel like shit. And not content with that, now young women are getting slated.

It's genuinely. Awful to see. What is it? Insecurity? A desperate need to be part of a group? Some kind of hierarchy?

I choose my friends carefully and not for what they wear but who they are.

And to anyone still reading who is feeling crap. Fuck this shit. Being judgemental and superficial is never a good look. Ignore anyone like this you meet in real life. Decent people aren't superficial dicks. They're not worth your time, nor a single thought. Trust me :)

Mairas

And as for Barbara cartland. Why not?

She had an amazing life. Massively successful author. Really interesting woman.

Excerpts from wiki

'The war marked the beginning of a lifelong interest in civic welfare and politics for Cartland, who served the War Office in various charitable capacities as well as the St John Ambulance Brigade. In 1953, she was invested at Buckingham Palace as a Commander of the Order of St John of Jerusalem for her services.

In 1955, Cartland was elected a councillor on Hertfordshire County Council[7] as a Conservative and served for nine years. During this time she campaigned successfully for nursing home reform, improvement in the salaries of midwives and the legalisation of education for the children of Romani.'

'After originally deciding she would like to be buried in her local parish church, featuring a coffin of marble construction, covered in angels, this was later changed; Cartland was buried in a cardboard coffin, because of her concerns for environmental issues.['

Wiki has lots more.

But yeah. She looked silly in her old age with loads of slap on and her pink stuff etc.

Hmmmmmmm.

Sorry to off road but, really. She made a fortune. She sounds to have had a good relationship with her kids who were there when she died.

But yeah sod all that. Didn't she look silly! And that's all that matters.

Oops a few duplicate cut and paste errors!

May draw this the thread to a close with those long posts.

No bad thing tbh.

Maireas · 05/01/2021 22:43

@NiceGerbil - what an interesting life! More to her than her image. Like Dolly Parton. Very, very true about confidence and appearance.

CandyLeBonBon · 05/01/2021 23:05

Well said @NiceGerbil

Janegrey333 · 06/01/2021 01:08

Cartland was ludicrous.

NiceGerbil · 06/01/2021 01:28

I'm sure, if she were still alive, she would have given zero fucks about your opinion Grin

Of course she wouldn't. God rest her soul.

(I wouldn't model my appearance on her though.)

"I genuinely don't go around thinking this stuff. At all.

When you see people, you make an assumption of which age bracket they're in. You may not be consciously thinking 'she has bad posture so she's probably x age', but you will still be taking a guess at her/his age. It's totally normal.

giantangryrooster · 06/01/2021 13:00

Instantly aging?

Toodlers, teenagers and mn Wink.

giantangryrooster · 06/01/2021 13:01
