Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

Grey hair, sensible shoes, bad fitting clothes, particularly jeans and really heavy make up. I got my colours done (birthday present from a friend) and it's completely changed things. I now wear lots of colours that I never wore. I also bought some make up. Good quality bb cream, a light blusher, lipstick and eyeliner. Everyone keeps telling me I look well. I highly recommend it if you are struggling.

NoodleDoodle24 · 04/01/2021 18:45

Has to be another vote for grey hair. If you are a trendy skinny 18-21 year old yes you can do this otherwise no.

My sister in law has recently grown hers out and it looks awful. She genuinely looks like she could be her husbands mother and she isn’t even 40.

VanillaAndOrange · 04/01/2021 18:47

While I don't think it really matters how old you are or look, these are a few of the things I can think of:

Make you look physically older
Hair too dark for your complexion
Not having a fringe (unless you have a very round face)
Dry or weatherbeaten hands
Tired, droopy body language
Saggy boobs in ill-fitting bras

Make you look "old at heart"
Eyeshadow without mascara
Very small watches, especially with those stretchy metal straps
Very small rings on bigger hands
Straight or baggy trousers worn a bit shorter than average
Not putting colours together very thoughtfully
Very shiny shoes or boots
Neutral coloured tights
Thin tights in general, unless for a very formal/dressy occasion
High heels for everyday wear

DreamTheMoors · 04/01/2021 18:50

Kindness and a smile are two things that will de-age you instantly and are the best wrinkle-removers youth-enhancers of them all. Better than Botox or plastic surgery.

Better than any makeup, better than any haircut and better than any clothes or shoes.

Guaranteed.

RoSEbuds6 · 04/01/2021 18:51

I agree with @Jetatyeovilaerodrome that grey hair is very ageing unless you are actually 20, and poor teeth as well.
As I have greying hair and wonky teeth I'm not hugely bothered about looking my age, but if I did they would be the first thing I fixed.

likeamillpond · 04/01/2021 18:51

@FanfictionFan

I'm sticking up for bootcut jeans I bloody miss that style, I can't wait for them to be back in fashion. Tbh I wear them anyway and don't actually give a fig what people think.
oorcut are coming back! Along with flairs. I think people nowadays are wearing whatever the hell they like when it comes to jeans and that's a good thing. Some people suit skinnies, some have figures that suit boyfriend style. I suit bootcut. It's far better to dress for your body shape than blindly follow the advice from overpaid fashion gurus.
Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 04/01/2021 19:03

Bootcut are very fashion again, as is Diana hair/collars/20 deniers

Lots of millenials on this thread are in danger of getting stuck like their mothers in ideas of what was stylish - or not - when they were young....

Maireas · 04/01/2021 19:05

I'm confused, @VanillaAndOrange.. How can I be "old at heart" because I wear thin rings?
I'm glad you endorse fringes, though Wink

Maireas · 04/01/2021 19:08

@Ihatemyselffordoingthis... my thoughts exactly.
A lot of 20 somethings are wearing a lot of supposedly "ageing" clothes and cosmetics!
You're more likely to see heavy foundation on a 20 year old than a 60 year old.

Yogalola · 04/01/2021 19:08

Look in the mirror before you face the world, and be critical of yourself.
Ask yourself ;
Do I look good in these clothes?
Is my hair clean and brushed?
If makeup applied does the colour suit?
If no makeup try at least to moisturise?
Above all be happy within and smile, you’ll grow confidence and appear younger in attitude
Too many look old before their time because they can’t be bothered with how they look

RoSEbuds6 · 04/01/2021 19:09

Thinking about it, surely it doesn't matter what we oldies wear and we are basically invisible anyway?

I'm wondering about getting a sturdy tween suit and brogues, Margaret Rutherford has always been an inspiration to me.

This, 100%!

The best post on this thread!

Floisme · 04/01/2021 19:21

Oh please - one of the best things about getting old is that random men no longer stop me in the street telling me to smile.

VanillaAndOrange · 04/01/2021 19:22

How can I be "old at heart" because I wear thin rings?

I'm visualising a particular style here - I don't know how to describe it. Very conventional, probably gold, with very small stones, but crucially, mismatched to the size and shape of the person's hands. I have big knobbly knuckles and I don't think I suit small rings - I'm only in my 50s, but I think it would look somehow old-fashioned if I insisted on wearing them anyway just because they're objectively pretty. They suited me when I was a teenager. Not moving on and embracing whatever your body/colouring/hair or whatever looks like now can be ageing, in my opinion.

dogsarethebestpeople · 04/01/2021 19:29

Botox. Lip filler. Matchy matchy. Boot cut jeans.
Elasticated anything.

Thinkingthinking · 04/01/2021 19:35
@LobotheBotanist I have extremely long legs - and arms. Shorter upper body. Fat buttocks, skinny ankles. Delicate wrists.

My facial features are also a bit weird.
You sound like a supermodel!

Have you tried shopping at scandi shops like Cos or Arket? They’re suited to tall, long limbed people. Maybe mix up your wardrobe if you don’t feel it is serving you anymore. Clothes should really make you feel good - not old!

cherish123 · 04/01/2021 19:43

@itssquidstella what are "mum boots"? I hope I don't wear mum boots. 😆

Geordieoldgirl · 04/01/2021 19:44

Whiskery hairs that suddenly appear on the chin all the time now.

itssquidstella · 04/01/2021 19:46

@cherish123 here's a selection!

Wearing a badly fitting bra after being measured at m and s etc so aging.

Most of the armpit fat you see should be in the cup.Its not fat its breast tissue.

If you have to hold your boobs going up and downstairs it does not fit.

Boob or Bust bra measuring advise will sort this out! It takes 4 measurements.

If it rides up at the back the band is too big. It should be the same all the way round.

Is your cup right in the boob crease or sitting too low?

If your boobs pop out bottom your band is too big.

If you fall out a plunge bra your band is too big and your cup is too small.

4 boobs your cup is too small.

Look in the mirror can you see the gore (that bit in the middle) is flat against the skin or can you get a finger/fist in that gap ? Its too big in band if it is.

Get a good fitting bra and it will make you look a dress size smaller.
fyi you will struggle to then find your proper size in supermarkets and cheap shops.

cuts in under armpit and you want to fling it off after a long day it does not fit. You can be comfy in the right size.

Pop your bra on back to front straps not on and pull it away from your ribcage how many itches give do you have? more than an inch band is too big.

join booborbust advise group answer 3 questions . how to measure it in annoucements at the top of the page. Don't say how can this be right i am a 36e but its saying i am a 30gg. Read some threads all these questions have come up loads. I joined 2 years ago its been life changing. Even if it is a pita to find my size. Cup sizes are not the same on different bits of elastic they are in proportion to each band size. There are loads of posts from 34b how can i be a 28ff too.

Sunshiney1981 · 04/01/2021 19:51

Alcohol.
I know it’s not the exact point of the thread but it’s so dehydrating as you get older.
Really shows on skin.

Wonderfulstuff · 04/01/2021 19:52

Giving a shit about what anyone else thinks.

CandyLeBonBon · 04/01/2021 19:54

Well I think I do wear mum boots (I just looked 😱) but at least, being a natural redhead, my hair hasn't greyed yet so I'll not be my crone-like head in shame just yet! Grin

cherish123 · 04/01/2021 20:02

@ginfordinner that's one of the reasons I stopped wearing boot cut jeans - if it rains, they get wet and fall down.😆

Ddot · 04/01/2021 20:12

Brooch no way I loves em
