Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

I have learned from this thread that Mum boots are any boots being worn by a woman over 40. That about right?

NotMeNoNo · 03/01/2021 22:40

Ginfordinner if you are old enough for at least 10 years in the 90s/00s we wore bootcut jeans in all weathers. Ideally with a chunky heeled wrangler boot. I think there was actually an MN boot. They weren’t meant to drag the ground unless you were a teenager.

SquidInALid · 03/01/2021 22:42

Wear what you like. Rules are ridiculous!

Maireas · 03/01/2021 22:42

I think 35, Norwester, or 25 if worn with a waterproof coat. And a fringe. I think.

nevernotstruggling · 03/01/2021 22:43

@NiceGerbil

If you have a lot of wrinkles. You can mush rice pudding up and apply it to the face. It fills the nooks and crannies really well and so is an excellent primer.

You do need to leave it to harden for 30 mins before applying Foundation.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I wore bootcuts in the 00s, but I first wore them in the 1970s when they were called bell bottoms.

I am that old Grin

UsernameSaved · 03/01/2021 22:45

@Ginfordinner

Why does anyone think that bootcut jeans are a good idea in winter when it rains a lot? Confused
You wear them with boots?

You dont wear them with flip flops in the rain.

Do you wear waterproof trousers all the time?

More or less

Anyone remember pixie boots?

Maireas · 03/01/2021 22:47

@glas14368 - I think a Rothschild's giraffe would be less aging than a cat. I hope you have high ceilings.
@NiceGerbil - ideal. Unless someone invents an invisibility cloak for us.

Ginfordinner · 03/01/2021 22:52

@UsernameSaved when I wore bootcuts about 15 years ago I wore them with trainers not boots. I think getting the length of them right is quite tricky. They look awful when too short.

Is a Rothschilds Giraffe the over 50s version of Sophie?

GFD Fair enough did they get wet both times round? I think one of the great things about being old is watching fashions come round again and people are all buying what would have been unthinkable a decade ago.

Maireas · 03/01/2021 22:56

@UsernameSaved - yes, that's about right.
Does Sophie wear mum boots, though?

She comes from Waitrose and so I imagine Dubarry and Le Chameau.

She needs 2 pairs at a time obviously

Are they mum boots?

glas14368 · 03/01/2021 23:00

@Maireas

Thank you for the advice. I will look into. A pet giraffe may bestow an aura of youth upon me, and take peoples attention away from my dreadful habit of fleece wearing.

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 23:00

Yes I remember pixie boots!

It's interesting to see old fashions coming back, seems cowboy boots are on the way...

I love flares. Have worn them continuously since about 92. Have been hard to source at times! Note. Flares not bootcut! No half measures here Grin

IfNotNow12 · 03/01/2021 23:20

I have a fantastic pair of flares. I can't do them up anymore, I just get them out and stroke them from time to time. Flares are so flattering, and also you can pretend to be one of Charlie's angels.
I don't get the whole mum boot thing. The young girls now are wearing those clumpy 90's black ankle boots that look like trotters. I have a feeling if I wore them they would magically transform to Mum boots? So, yes, Mum boots are boots worn by anyone over 40.

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 23:27

The mid 90s fashion onwards for about 10 or 15 years was awful.

Remember how you couldn't get anything except low rise jeans at least in the shops I could afford/ went to.

And then it was haha muffin top etc. Well give us a choice of jeans then FFS!

And it was all drab, no colour. Backlash to the freedom of the 70s 80s. In more ways than one. Lads mags etc.

So pleased colour and fun and choice have been more prevalent the last few years!

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 23:28

Also why is mum a pejorative term?

Laburnam · 03/01/2021 23:36

I think I’ve just aged 100 years reading this thread

Destinysdaughter · 03/01/2021 23:52

Cowboy boot are back you say? That's good as I have a pair I bought in America in 1989!

( disclaimer: I am a hoarder, especially of shoes! ) Grin

giantangryrooster · 03/01/2021 23:55

Right you ageist fuckers Grin, have just skimmed the thread. Conclusion: you can't wear anything, the moment you do its mumsy and aging.

So strip down, put a paperbag over your wrinkly head (probably good for covid avoidance too) and be quiet.

Or just don't give a shit and wear what you like, probably looks much better than angling for looking young.

And OP, weird bodyshape long legs, short body and big butt? You must be a model by that description, a Kardashian maybe Wink?

(If you really really want to look old and out of place try high up/thight pigtails, helps with the wrinkles as well Grin).

C0NNIE · 04/01/2021 00:02

Here’s some excellent fashion advice for those over 30

warningcurvesahead.com/2016/06/04/24-things-women-over-30-should-wear/

NiceGerbil · 04/01/2021 00:19

Great link!

Of course many women don't look so fabulous while wearing whatever the fuck they want so a fuck you attitude is essential!

Luckily once you pass the age where men eye you on the street all the time and often pass comment... You feel much more comfy when out and about. And also in general older women take less shit.

So. Wear whatever you want. Wear it with strut. And leverage the fuck you attitude Grin

Oh and also never wear hair, chinos or have a face. Obviously!
