Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

NiceGerbil

Great tip. I've been finding the polyfiller isn't working too well recently.

When I grow up I want to look like Helen Mirren in Leather and Taffeta!

Highlighta · 04/01/2021 07:20

Love that link Connie.

I'm in that idgaf category (over 50s can do text speak too... Wink)

I have recently bought my first pair of Dr Martens. And they have a heel so I'm not sure which category those will be lumped into on this thread. I did see that apparently nobody over 30 should wear converse, so not sure what the MN rule would be on these.

So I'm probably going to be told I'm trying too hard. Or I'm mutton dressed as lamb. But I like them and therefore I don't really give a fuck.

I saw a meme, which I now can't find. (maybe because I don't have my glasses on). To the 20 something girls who think that 50 something woman are jealous of them, enjoy your next 240 periods.

😁

Do you wear waterproof trousers all the time?

Well, sort of, most of the time. Pleather jeans are pretty waterproof I have found. They have become my walking wear.Grin

only the v young, gothic Or POC should consider a dark brown dye

I don’t even know where to start with this comment.

What's POC? I'm neither v young nor gothic and have naturally dark brown/ black hair. Is this allowed? Confused

Bluesheep8 · 04/01/2021 09:15

Ok I've established that I'm not a POC either.

Well the fashion police will have you incarcerated before you can say 'mum boots' Shock

Age has nothing to do with style. I know 80 year olds with much better style than people in their 20s. I know people with amazing style at 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 etc etc.
I read an article compiling the best dressed women of 2020 and they were all over 40, different shapes, sizes, ages, ethnicity and all with different but amazing style.
What I notice are:
Well fitting clothes for your body shape. 3 sizes too small jeans look terrible even if you’re a size 10.
People who are comfy always look cooler than people who are obviously pulling at their clothes in discomfort and can’t sit properly because of their clothes.
People who can dance into the night with comfy shoes (or boots!) on look better than those on the sidelines rubbing their painful feet after wearing high heals all day.
I think good style looks effortless, most probably because it is. Not too much makeup, minimal hair styling etc is something I think is really stylish but I have friends who are the total opposite and are very glamorous, with short dresses, big hair etc and they also look amazing because you can see that they feel amazing dressing that way.
Good style isn’t a slave to fashion trends but evolves naturally through time.

Why should dark brown hair be restricted to goths, young people and POC? I am Italian with wavy dark brown hair. Do I need to get it lopped off and dyed silver? I was going to wait until my 95th birthday to do that.

This thread is unintentionally very funny. I love bright colours, floral prints, polka dots and stripes, and sometimes wear them all at the same time, but obviously with my mum boots, so I don't commit the cardinal sin of trying to look younger than I am, Grin

TornadoOfSouls · 04/01/2021 12:32

Vogue used to do an issue every year which focused on style at every decade, although like many of those features I think it stopped at 60s which was pretty ageist. It used to be really good though, I remember a woman in her 50s who had long hair and always wore jeans and Superga trainers. This was at least 15 years ago. The whole issue used to be quite inspiring.

This. I'm not British but I have very pale/white skin and freckles. My eyebrows and hair are naturally very very dark. Since I never bought into the overplucking eyebrow trend, they are shaped but dark and thick.

Oh wait dark hair and eyebrows are ageing. Should i just start bleaching everything?

What about my pubes? Those are even darker.. black really.Grin

JaneJeffer · 04/01/2021 12:53

I'm just wearing camouflage from now on.

Whydidimarryhim · 04/01/2021 13:10

I’m going out in a black bin liner!!!
Seriously who made any one an expert in fashion on mums net!!!
Yes we can have an opinion but I’m wondering how many women walk down the street noticing and internally criticising other women.
If you like it wear it - .😀

I found those first few 'Ageless Style' editions really inspiring and the kind of thing I'd have recommended to the op (if she's still following). I particularly remember a feature on Joan Burstein (owner of Browns at the time) who I think was 80+. But it lost its way and started focusing on looking younger as opposed to celebrating stylish women who looked something like their real age. I gave up after they featured Cameron Diaz, who's lovely but was barely 40. It was a shame and I've not come across anything similar since.
TornadoOfSouls · 04/01/2021 15:12

@Floisme yes, I seem to remember that the women featured weren’t the average Vogue identi-Sloane and had interesting, individual styles. Joan Burstein is an icon. I also remember a good article about Jean Muir a long time ago, in which she talked about painting her house in many shades of white.
It would be so nice if older women’s style was celebrated more. And no disrespect to Helen Mirren or Joanna Lumley, who are accomplished as well as beautiful, but it would be nice if women were celebrated for their style and panache, not just as a kind of ‘wow look, an old lady who’s still sexy’ which I think can be slightly demeaning.
I agree with the pp who said in Grace and Frankie, Frankie’s style is better. Partly because she’s not trying too hard to look younger.

Yes, I do at home. If I'm going out (touch wood, after lockdown), I'll be more comfortable in something that is not ageing so I'm quite interested in what people's opinions are even if I don't agree with them all. It's a pity the thread's been derailed by people who aren't interested really.
Floisme · 04/01/2021 16:37

I agree about Helen Mirren Tornado - I think she's great but it's so lazy the way they use her every time.
I like Yoko Ono's style although it wouldn't work for me as I don't look great in black; also Margaret Howell - you rarely see photos but she always looks cool, like her clothes; likewise Jane Birkin, and of course Dame Vivienne.

CandyLeBonBon · 04/01/2021 16:45

I think this thread should be re-titled "please give me your snobby and sneery opinions about women over a certain age, making sure to include horrible sweeping generalisation about their clothing choices and appearance so that you can feel smug and superior"

But I guess that might not have had quite sane ring to it! Wink

Hats off to all the awesome women in here who have shown up and made it very clear that this ageist bullshit won't be tolerated

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/01/2021 16:57

I was given an amazing Vivienne Westwood dress recently. Its really punky and I love it. But a "friend" suggested I was too old to wear it, I think she was angling for me to give it to her actually, but she can sod off. I wore it the next time I went out when I knew she would be there and got a lot of compliments (well, the dress did!) and she never mentioned it again!

Frenchdressing · 04/01/2021 17:05

Diane Keaton has a wacky style but she rocks it.
